My 17 year old niece wants to sew "things" for her room. We already made a QAYG into a pillow top. She is a "girly" girl - lots of pinks with black and white thrown in. Her room is Paris, movie stars and cute or inspirational sayings. She wants to help sew but doesn't have the time to devote to a quilt right now. I have pillow cases and throw pillows for us to make tonight. On down the road, we talked about d9p, yellow brick road and Warm wishes patterns for lap throws or bed quilt. What other "small" things can you think of? Thanks for ideas in advance.

QuiltnNan 07-25-2011 12:50 PM

a new purse.

mamahippychicky 07-25-2011 12:54 PM

What about a fabric covered pin board

gwanma 07-25-2011 01:01 PM

how about mug rugs she can make for Christmas gifts? Warm wishes is a great quilt to make; easy, fast and pretty. There is a "photo quilt" that is made of thing clear vinyl "pockets" that you slip pictures into and hang on the wall. The pockets are sewn on at the top and bottom so you can just slip the photos in through the sides. Teens love to see photos of their friends and family.

Great idea! I knew I count on the board for wonderful ideas.

kimscruzer 07-25-2011 01:08 PM

Bulletin board , desk chair cover , lamp shade cover , dresser runner , curtains , kindle or phone cover.

moonwork42029 07-25-2011 01:38 PM

She can also cover her trays with fabric (mod podge lacquer), padded/quilted frames for mirrors or pictures. New make up bags -- travel bag.

VickyS 07-25-2011 01:40 PM

14" Doll quilts or baby blankets - when she decides she wants to quilt. They are small and easy to maneuver in a sewing machine.

Maybe a wall hanging would be good for her as well. It is a quicker finish than an entire quilt... She might also like to make fabric storage boxes and other useful things as well.

leakus 07-25-2011 02:07 PM

What about making fabric boxes to organize things. Here is a link to one
http://www.allfreesewing.com/Video-T...e-a-Fabric-Box

There was one much simpler to make that a Russian crafter showed us with a tute. I don't remember her name. But if you google you will find different styles.

babyquiltlady 07-25-2011 02:11 PM

Quilt made from her old t-shirts

CoriAmD 07-25-2011 02:46 PM

what about a few stuffed animals? I know she is 17 but some girls still like to toss them on their bed for looks.

thequilterslink 07-25-2011 03:39 PM

snap bags, esasy totes, grocery bags for her mom and gifts, book covers

alikat110 07-25-2011 03:41 PM

Floor Pillows or large bean bag

blueangel 07-25-2011 03:43 PM

Bulleton board. Purse

Just-Lee 07-25-2011 03:45 PM

Pink, black, and white rag quilt. They are very quick, except for clipping the seams.

tdgiffin 07-25-2011 03:46 PM

Notions, lace, ribbons, sew-on pearls, charms with Paris-related items on them (poodle, Eiffel Tower....)

Rusty's Mama 07-25-2011 06:03 PM

I made a wallhanging for my GD several years ago. The pattern is: Party Bags by Tracey Brookshier. It is 48" x 48" and can be very colorful, very personalized. The pattern was copyrighted 2003 and the website on the pattern is: [email protected].

I don't know where I got the pattern, but the boss I was working for at the time liked the one I made for my GD and asked me to make one for his daughter. My GD used it (and still does) for hair clips, etc.

fallonquilter 07-25-2011 07:29 PM

how about a cute fabric bowl that matches her room. She could put little things in it and it fun and easy to do.

Nanamoms 07-25-2011 10:13 PM

Curling iron tote bag (for when it's hot); cosmetic bag, jewelry hanging bag (similar to shoe bag with pockets to store her jewelry in...use vinyl for front of pockets and velcro for closures); small quilted or applique pieces to be framed (my niece just did one for her new college apartment = she fussy cut a flamingo and made an applique and framed it); cell phone holder, quilted caddy for her bedside.

I'm sure the ideas will just keep flowing from this board!!

ghquilter53 07-26-2011 03:36 AM

Maybe table topper or table runner for dresser. Wallhanging. Organizer with pockets to hang on closet door. It can be small to put jewelry or bigger for shoes, scarves, etc.

Suz 07-26-2011 03:47 AM

Trim a set of towels, scrunchies for the hair or a hair band, trim jeans or tee or jacket, sweatshirt or ballcap.

gemladi 07-26-2011 04:35 AM

Teens love bags of all shapes and sizes. They finish quickly and they love them.

arimuse 07-26-2011 06:11 AM

look for all those little "decor" projects online: cloth desk accessories, little baskets, hanger covers, makeup/jewelry wall pockets, window valances, things like that - sharet

Riverton Quilter 07-26-2011 06:26 AM

How about a wall hanging, pillow shams, decorative pillows, padded picture frames, a dresser runner.

She may want to make something for a charity or friends.

Drew 07-26-2011 06:29 AM

A tote instead of a school bag.

grammysharon 07-26-2011 06:37 AM

Cover for transporting a laptop computer???

Let her start a DP9 patch, but tell her it is not a quick project. You may be surprised at how much she gets done sewing a little at a time on it and then she will have something for her bed and also realize how much time and work goes into a quilt. Just make sure she knows this is a long term project. She can also make the smaller projects in between taking a break from the quilt if she likes. I love the DP9 patch, it goes quickly and makes up nicely as well.

How about placemats for the lamp table or dresser scarf. My GD loves wild type of materials. She can get very creative. She has made quilts for her friends, even a small dressy satin bag to match their formals, etc. She likes to make her gifts. Maybe yours would too.

IBQLTN 07-26-2011 09:08 AM

Why not cover a trash can for her room with girly fabric? Maybe even put a feather boa around the top.

Make a tissue box (cube shaped) cover. You just use a drawstring at the top about 2" down from the edge and pull the tissue out through the opening? I've done these with machine embroidery (redwork designs) and it goes really fast!

Oh, did anyone mention pillowcases?

sassey 07-26-2011 09:27 AM

litter bag, over the seat organizer for her car cd holder for her sunvisor

callie 07-26-2011 09:53 AM

toaster cover, any kitchen appliance cover, place mats, pillow cases, runner of any sort, dish towels.

My time 07-26-2011 11:20 AM

How about the zipper flowers? Most teens think their cool.

piepatch 07-26-2011 11:45 AM

A tote bag ?

Kallen 07-26-2011 12:21 PM

How about a snap bag. I just made one the other day and loved it. Here's a link to one, you'll have to copy and paste it to your browser. When I googled snap bag, this came up from one of our member's posts! I just made one last week and it was a "snap" to make. You don't have to make it with a quilt square. You can just use pretty fabric and sandwich it with batting and quickly quilt it. Only difference from mine and the one on this site is that I didn't sew off the corners to make a bottom. Also, My lining is 16" x 8" and my outside fabric and batting is 10" x 8". It is centered on the lining fabric, quilted, casing turned down 1 1/2" twice to overlap the front fabric and stitched in place. Sides sewed up and turned right side out. And there you have it. They open right up and snap back in place when you let it go. Very Clever.

Binder cover for her 3 ring binder for school? Favorite colors or school colors

Rosie the "Ripper" 07-26-2011 01:21 PM

What about a bed runner? Not as much work as the whole quilt. Then she could make accessories to match (trash can cover, toss pillows, maybe even valances for windows).

fairydawn 07-26-2011 03:59 PM

wallhanging, window treatments{curtains/valance}, shoe bags or some type of over the door organizer, make-up bags, rag rugs, laundry bag.

desertrose 07-26-2011 04:16 PM

How about making some quilted, book covers, for diary, perpahs some coil baskets/bowls for tossing those things that tend to clutter her room. What about a quilted bed runner that might coordinate with the quilt fabric she wants to use for her bed quilt, at a later time. That's it for me.

madamekelly 07-26-2011 07:03 PM

How about an organizer that hangs on the back of her door to catch all those things that never seem to have a home? You could use custom colors, and maybe make a few small ones out of clear vinyl to hold jewelry or photos of her friends?
