One unusual stain remover I learned about in my college days is "aerosol" hair spray - like aqua net. I sat a just finished satin bridesmaid's dress on an ironing board with an open ink pen which, of course, bled uncontrobally on the satin. Spraying it with the hair spray saved the day. It is worth a try! Good luck.

rather B stitchin 03-06-2011 07:21 AM

don't give up trying to get it clean but I think you should finish it and give it to her because quilts for babies are meant to be washed over and over again.

Janet Leigh 03-06-2011 07:31 AM

I agree with finishing the quilt. I love the idea of tea staining it.
Also, if you can't beat it .. join it. After the quilt is finished, put some diet coke in a spray bottle and spray the back, randomly, so that it matches the original stain. Let it set for awhile then wash the whole thing. You may have just stumbled on to something!! ;-)

SharonC 03-06-2011 07:31 AM

I feel your pain and am dying to know whatever came of it. Did you beat the stain out of the quilt :) :).

nycquilter 03-06-2011 07:47 AM

for blood stains, your saliva has the enzymes that remove YOUR blood. When I've been unlucky enough to bleed on white fabric (where else would I bleed???), simply saturate it with saliva (don't do unless you've rinsed your mouth of coffee--LOL) and then wash. It comes right out even if the blood dried. Or simply allow the saliva to dry and wash later.

These were all really great tips. I am the queen of coffee stain. We take bets on how long my shirt will be stain free. I have found that if through it in the wash with differant stain removers it sets in instead. I have had wonderful success with bloting, one cloth underneath to absorb the stain.
Ok ladies no divorce court. At least the men try AND HOW many of us have screwed up something of theirs while trying to be helpful?
I will say I like the radom stain it all .

christina bennett 03-06-2011 08:09 AM

One thing after reading all of the tips is one solution was left out. I have found a written note to save for years to come. A story with the quilt. My husband wanted to help so much and this happened . He is so sorry . The stain comes with Love.
The story of all the love that went into this is a wonderful memory. Even the bad stain, in a few years it will be stained from all the love of being carried around.

Quiltcamp 03-06-2011 08:14 AM

Fels Naptha soap. I haven't found anything that it wouldn't take out yet....

one-and-only 03-06-2011 08:33 AM

This has not been mentioned, but when my girls were little, I used baby wipes, it worked on baby formula, soda pop, spinach, ketchup, spaghetti sauce, mud you name it. Of course, that has been a few years ago. My babies are 24, 26, & 31, just a few years ago. It might be worth a try.

p38flygirl 03-06-2011 08:48 AM

I would try shout or any clothing stain remover...

He was able to selvage it but it never looked like what it was before the crash.

My wedding cake had buttercream frosting. My parents picked it up, carefully placed it on the floor in the rear of their SUV, and drove 15 miles to the church. It was quite hot that day, and the sun coming in the back window melted the frosting on one side! They were afraid I'd be upset, but what the heck

CarrieAnne 03-06-2011 09:09 AM

Oxyclean ususlly works for me.

I agree with Oxyclean, or maybe try vinegar or club soda.

Years ago I lived in a tiny rental with beige carpeting. There wasn't room for a coffee or an end table so guests had to place their drink glasses on the floor. My friend Dave put a glass with red wine (!!) on the floor and then accidentally tipped it over. Being young and uninformed, I didn't know how to get it out.
Months later Dave (again!) set a bottle of beer in the same place on the floor, kicked it over, and the red wine stain came out!!! I'll bet it was the carbonation, probably NOT the hops and the alcohol sugars that did the trick! When I eventually moved and had the carpets cleaned, there was no evidence left of that stain.
So ever since, I always recommend trying seltzer water for difficult stains.

P.S. Nope I didn't marry Dave, but we're still friends -- and I always make sure he uses a sippy cup!

try dawn dish detergent (the blue one only) and hand rub until it is out then wash with cold water. This has happened to me and the and it worked. It works for all kinds of stains on clothing, I use it all the time. Oh, and FYI it kills fleas on dogs, just don't use too much or to often. Really does!!!

majormom 03-06-2011 11:10 AM

I think instead of trying to get rid of the stain, you should 'stain' the whole quilt with diet coke. (unless it is a very disagreeable color!). Many years from now there could be a complaint such as this: " Gee I loved the color when the quilt was 'new' now it has all faded!"

Totally agree. Once I spilled paint on a carpet.... my DH looked at it, took my brush, and dry-brushed that paint across the entire room. Looked great, stayed that way for several years before we replaced it.

Dish soap with Lemon also kills fleas...

cpfrog 03-06-2011 12:06 PM

Can you cover over the spots with a appliqued label? or write, with permanent pen, a sort of label words trying to cover in and around those areas.... a little here and little there? or FMQ it from the back side and emphasize those spots to make it look like you intended the spots to be there????

At least it's clean and washed... baby quilts will get washed alot more... and the baby won't mind. The mom might not even see that part. Good luck

Bonnie P 03-06-2011 01:19 PM

That's what I would do as well if the stains don't come out!
Good luck.

Grandma Cindy 03-06-2011 01:57 PM

Maybe you could tea dye it? So, so sorry...

quilt'nmomma 03-06-2011 01:59 PM

I keep a bottle of dawn dish soap at the washing machine. It has taken out every stain I have ever had. Even set in stains.

gmcsewer 03-06-2011 02:17 PM

I think I would dip the whole quilt in the diet coke orwhatever. I don't think you will be able to get the carmel color out. I had a new dress to wear to the office when I started my first job, spilled a coke on my desk, which ran over onto the one side if the skirt. Tried everhting and nothing worked.

chamby 03-06-2011 02:26 PM

So what exactly was in that diet coke. I have never had coke to set in like that. It always washes out for me with just a regular washing.

Lorae Radunz 03-06-2011 02:35 PM

Try "Vivid". It is wonderful! It even takes out baby formula stains. I'm not sure what it will do since you've already washed it. I've always used it before I washed the stain. It's worth a try. Good luck...

When I get blood on fabric while pinning or quilting, I spit on the spot. You can see the spot come out before your eyes. Something in your saliva that causes this????????

Ziva 03-06-2011 02:40 PM

Test peroxide first to ensure it does not pull the color out

Suzy 03-06-2011 03:03 PM

When all else fails, I take a bar of LAVA soap and wet the soap and the stain and rub gently. S

Good Luck

Suzyo far it has removed many stubborn stains that many stain removers wouldn't touch. I don't know how large an area you are talking about but I just work one spot at a time and so far so good.

Suzy 03-06-2011 03:12 PM

Sorry granddaughter hit some keys just as I was sending. Hope you an understand above post.

Jennifer22206 03-06-2011 03:18 PM

if you live near a Dollar Tree run and get their cleaning product AWESOME. That's the name of it. It takes everything out - ball point pen, blood, soda

the bakery had cakes in the freezer, so they could redo it, but it was very simple & all white... we took some of the flowers out of the centerpieces & used those to decorate the cake..i was white & blue, cause the icing was all over me...

I don't think this is meant to get out the cola stain...but then again maybe it is. But I take it as "shake can, remove lid, point nozzle into your mouth and squeeze as much as you want into your mouth". Repeat until contents of can is either empty or your feeling better about the stain. LOL.

sylvia77 03-06-2011 04:12 PM

If it doesn't come out, you could tea dye it and you'd never know it happened. Sorry, I know it must be heartbreaking.

Blood comes out with your own saliva - something about the enzymes.

diane Sneed 03-06-2011 04:45 PM

Try WISK. You can get this in the laundry detergent aisle. Tide usually works for me. I use the Wisk for tough stains.

ljfox 03-06-2011 04:46 PM

Well here is the end to the story. I soaked it overnight with Oxyclean and it came out. However it did fade the quilt a bit but not drastically. I still had to put the rest of the binding on it and since the quilt had shrunk some I decided to wash the other strips of binding and sew them to the quilt while they both were wet so that any dryer shrinkage would wrinkle the same as the strips already on it. Sewing a wet quilt was an adventure I never thought I would have! Then I put it back on the longarm frame because I had planned on one more row of quilting right next to the binding so I still had that to do. I did that wet too so that that quilting would match when it dried. Then I threw it in the dryer, and it looked just fine when it was done. I don't usually wash the quilts I gift so I did tell the story to my sister so that she could explain to my neice why it was already washed. And my husband gets to stay! He's a keeper and it was an accident. He still feels really bad and I bet he never does it again!

RatherB Quilting 03-06-2011 04:59 PM

Great to hear you got the stain out and that all is well...even if it was an adventure. Now, give Hubs a big kiss for thinking of you to bring you beverage, but tell him next time to put it in a water bottle with a lid! :)
