If it works, here is a quilt from a local quilt show. It's called "The Manly Quilt"
Every square is fabric that is manly, such as rocks, washers, wood etc. Something like this but also adding things have more to do with a carpenter. The photo does not do ti justice, it was my favorite quilt at the show.
good luck

Hope this works out. Good luck

I looked at your 2nd post about CS and the pattern I am using is on pg 3 of that sight! Thanks for the research!

As you can see, the CSq block (to distinguish it from the CSt block ;-) ) is still very popular, especially with the contemporary modern quilting crowd. I think it looks great in all fabric styles.

On that note, look what I found in reference to the block from 1976 - read the first paragraph:
http://thelibrary.org/lochist/period...weet/sp77h.htm
Pretty funny, huh?

Which one of those on page3 is yours?
When I was trying to figure it out, I actually stumbled across another QB member's CSq quilt. Small world.

Ok - Ya big chickens! I'll ask her...

Where do you see him - just around?
Did he seem smitten with you?
Do you know his mom or did he just tell you she quilts?
Did you invite him for lasagna or did you make him some to go?
How long ago did he do this work?
He knows where your office is and he has your Number...
has he tried to contact you yet?

I wouldn't be too forward with a quilt - they do scare easy!
Start with that dinner while you're planning the quilt and perhaps other things in the privacy of your head... Let us know how it goes.

Keep us posted on the romance, oops mean the quilt. haha. I am sure which ever you choose to do would be appriciated by him.

rahaube 06-18-2011 05:03 PM

How about the Carpenter's star. Seems appropriate to me.

Anna.425 06-18-2011 05:28 PM

GO for it girl and I think Carpenter's Wheel is the perfect choice for a quilt. He will appreciate the symbolism of the name, see that although you can take care of his heart and the pathway to it, you also have much more to offer.

Keep us informed.

Aunt Zaz 06-18-2011 05:40 PM

My husband is a carpenter and I made him the super easy carpenter's star I added a few nuts and bolts and tool fabric pieces ( this was a line out a few years back) it has lots of blue too since that is his favorite color. Adding a few pieces of tool material allowed the quilt to blend in our family room without screaming carpenter's quilt.

Better be careful.....I hired a young man to build me a fence when I was a young divorcee with two children. The fence kept getting better and better, (my young daughter said are you going to be my new Dad ?) and the rest is history as they say. Eight months later we were married and it's 34 years now and we still enjoy telling our story. Good Luck to you.

SandyinZ4 06-18-2011 07:20 PM

Will be interesting to see how this all turns out. Hope it goes well...I say just take it slow and what is meant to be will happen. Show us the quilt in progress, please. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you.

I will bet that he will like any geometric in shades of browns or blues. The Carpenters Wheel is a very good choice! Go for it!

soccertxi 06-19-2011 03:17 PM

Quilters Cache has an easy Carpenters Wheel...

brosier 06-19-2011 05:14 PM

how about a Carpenter's Star?

mizunogirl 06-20-2011 05:18 AM

When is dinner? Most important question.

KSCrafter 06-20-2011 01:48 PM

Wow, friends! I've been gone over the weekend and you've really surprised me! But I SO need the support, so I appreciate the comments. Now, let's see- he's a customer in my office, so he comes in to pay bills and do updates on his account. So, how much I see him varies. He does seem interested (I think?) and he told me his mother quilts- I don't know her. He did the work just last week and while we were talking he mentioned "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach" and we kept bringing up food topics. When I argued the bill on Friday, I told him I at least owed him a pie or something, then I said oh, how about lasagna? And he readily agreed. So I gave him a check and told him we weren't done talking about this. I'm not sure how we're going to work the food deal all out yet, but I'll let you know! (Right now, I'm packing up my current household to move to the new house with the quilting shed.)

I thought maybe just a little throw quilt, manly colors like blues and browns, in a simple pattern. Nothing too time-consuming like a wedding ring or anything! (LOL!)

AFQSinc 06-20-2011 02:15 PM

A throw is a great idea. I am sure he will appreciate anything that you make for him but especially a nice meal. Good luck!

Marvel 06-29-2011 04:25 PM

Have you thought of maybe combing the 2 patterns. Make the large CW and maybe design a special border and quilt tools in there. He will appreciate it I am sure. Who knows, might ask you to have dinner and get to know him better.

pegquilter8 07-05-2011 06:58 AM

Are You single? Then go for it. If not the food should suffice

dphelps 07-05-2011 07:41 AM

I would suggest the Carpenters Star in masculine colors. Maybe you can find out what his favorite colors are before starting. The add a catchy label pertaining to the pattern you use. Just a suggestion....

KSCrafter 08-05-2011 09:00 AM

Time for an update! It's been very hot and very busy here in Kansas. The first week of July I worked on packing up my house and moving to the new home. In the midst of that, I made my carpenter friend (Dale) a cherry pie. Homemade crust and all! I brought it to work and called him at the end of the day. I had to leave him a message so I just said there was a cherry pie here with his name on it and left my phone number. He called me right back and said he was working on my side of town and could be there soon. I made sure to have the pie in a glass dish which he would have to return. (That's some good old-fashioned flirting!) Of course, I didn't mention that... but sure enough HE noticed and said "oh, I'll have to bring your plate back". I just laughed it off by saying "oh, I just can't bake it in those tin ones!" (ha ha!!) He says, "I'm sorry I can't offer to sit down tonight and share a piece, but I'm going to keep this all to myself!" It was cute!

So, I wait about a week and he brings the plate back to my office. I was worried about how the pie turned out and he said yes, there was one problem. He said the pie was "this big, but it should have been THIS big" and made a large circle motion. YAY!! Then he complemented my crust- in fact, I got a "IT WAS JUST LIKE MOM'S"! YAY, again!! Then, talked a little bit.

So, I'm trying to get everything settled in the new house and time is ticking away. It's been 110 degrees for 2 weeks and way too hot to bake a lasagna. But I want to see him again, so I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies and called him again. This time, he didn't call back. I waited a day and he came to the office. There were 2 other girls up front so we all chatted awhile. (Uncomfortable!) Anyway, he started to leave, then stopped and told a very nice story... He had been with his family that weekend and his 14-yr old niece says "Uncle Dale, you look old. You need to dress better and get a haircut. Then maybe you can find a wife." We all laughed and then He said, "yeah, maybe after I get this big job done I'll get to work on that." And he looked at me and gave me a BIG SMILE! How sweet!!!

Kind of exciting, right? I may win over this bachelor man yet! By the way, I don't have any problem with the way he dresses (like the construction worker he is) or his hair (because there isn't much!). :-)

Leota 08-05-2011 09:05 AM

keep it up girl and you'll have him nailed to your heart and he'll have you glued by his side :D

marscrafter 08-05-2011 09:14 AM

That is such a sweet story, nothing like quilting and romance. LOL Hope everything works out! :-)

LyndaOH 08-05-2011 09:28 AM

I love this thread! (Pun intended!) I'll be keeping a good thought for you and the carpenter and hoping it works out.

thepolyparrot 08-05-2011 09:33 AM

How fun!!! He sounds like a nice guy and those can be hard to find. :)

Good luck! :D

annthreecats 08-05-2011 09:38 AM

This is a great thread. Wishing you all the best in coaxing that carpenter. Sounds like a fun guy. Enjoy yourself.

AFQSinc 08-05-2011 09:45 AM

So far, so good!

susie-susie-susie 08-05-2011 11:09 AM

Since the shed he worked on is at your new home, maybe there will be some things he will need to check on and could come just in time for dinner. Or desert and coffee.
Like "Everybody Loves Raymond" and the way he met Debora minus seeing her naked. Keep us posted.

Nancy O. 08-05-2011 04:02 PM

This sounds like the start of a wonderful love story. I am wishing for the two of you to get together, and live happily ever after !!!!!!!

Keep us updated.

SandyinZ4 08-05-2011 04:24 PM

This is such a fun story to follow. Thanks for the update. Please do keep us posted if anything happens 'after the big job' is finished.! Me thinks you better keep working on that quilt!

Love the carpenter's wheel. Sounds perfect for him. Don't get to personal yet!

yonnikka 08-05-2011 04:28 PM

He has a TRUCK, right??? (don't they all?) or a Van... Make him a small throw size quilt to go in his truck. Heavy duty cotton, or denim. Don't go overboard making it cutesy. If you do use some of those hammer and nails; buckets and buzz saw designs, use only a very few. But include his dog--uhhhh, his Dawg. Some bricks and wood grain designs. Stick to browns, blues, greens, plaids. or Denim.

SharBear 08-05-2011 04:32 PM

THANKS for the update -we're looking forward to hearing about how the summer continues to heat up! 8-)

sewnsewer2 08-06-2011 05:21 AM

I would just ask him.

KSCrafter 08-19-2011 10:35 AM

I bought a bushel of peaches from a roadside stand the other day and have been happily working my way through them. So, I made a cobbler for my friend last night and called him this morning to let him know. (You know, I'm almost 40 but I still get nervous when I'm calling a man!)

He's working out in the country today and asked if I'd be home tonight. Grrrr... the ONE night I have to be somewhere else! He said he needed to come by anyway to touch up the corner of my shed he worked on, so he'd try to get done with work early and he'd call me tonight so we could work something out. Yay!

EasyPeezy 08-19-2011 10:58 AM

Peach cobbler? Yummy.

Everything is looking good.
