Any ideas for a demo? At our quilt meeting we have a demo each month and I have it next month. ;) Need some ideas. We have beginners and very experienced quilters.

laughingquilter 04-26-2011 07:12 AM

A demo on continuous bias binding would be wonderful - I always forget just how to do it.

the casual quilter 04-26-2011 07:17 AM

How about paper piecing?

moonwork42029 04-26-2011 07:17 AM

Our last meeting had someone show the Acuquilt system... they cut the frayed edges flannel for the rag rugs...It was pretty cool.

Another meeting they brought the EQ7 and showed some of what it could do.

Since I'm new, everything is interesting

What part of quitmaking do you do best? If binding is one of your favorites, that is always a good one. Adjusting a border stencil. The demo should be something you are confident doing.

mhunt1717 04-26-2011 07:20 AM

How about the folded dahlia flowers?

BellaBoo 04-26-2011 07:31 AM

The one seam flying geese block and the 10 min block were the most popular demos at our guild.

Maride 04-26-2011 07:45 AM

I did one on machine Trapunto and was well liked.

shawnemily 04-26-2011 08:53 AM

I am the program chair for our guild and due to a death our program presenter couldnt make it. I had to come up with something QUICK!!!!
I just did a disappearing 9 patch and they LOVED it! I took pictures of each step and printed out the process for them and showed them how to do it. It was fun!!

quilter53 04-26-2011 12:05 PM

that is one of my duties for our quild. I had one of the quilters do a demo on continuous binding. It went really well. One month we all brought 2 of our fav tools. I'm needing ideas also.

dd 04-26-2011 12:13 PM

We have had demos on trapunto, prairie points, and color selections lately.

QuiltE 04-26-2011 02:47 PM

How about the fabric bowls that Eddie did a tutuorial on? A great way to use up scrap strips or ugly fabric. I did one out of a fabric that had faded along the folds in the sun.

SandyinZ4 04-26-2011 07:11 PM

You could do this one for an early start to Christmas ornaments.

Not related to quilting but does use fabric. :-)

orville 04-26-2011 07:40 PM

Thank you one and all for the ideas. I may need to do several after seeing some of these ideas.

PS Stitcher 04-26-2011 07:43 PM

Thanks! I needed an idea or two as well!

AudreyB 04-26-2011 08:26 PM

I've been enlisted to do the program at our guild in May. The topic they gave me is "How to Organize Your Stash." I'm showing different ways to fold fabric, store patterns, organize scraps, and more. I don't have it all figured out yet but that's the direction I'm going.

QuiltswithConvicts 04-27-2011 03:55 AM

For a quicky demo, I have done the disappearing 4-Patch & the 10 Minute Block. Even the most experienced loved the 10-Minute Block.

ywoodruff5 04-27-2011 04:20 AM

A mitered binding corner is always appreciated.

Watson58 04-27-2011 04:40 AM

thanks, I needed some ideas also.

Show them how to sew a curved edge, the Apple Core design is a good one and so is Drunkard's Path. Many avoid sewing curves so any help you could give them would be appreciated.

Last month I did Prairie Points and showed everyone how to do them in a long line (2 color) and the 2 different types of points. Also what you can do with them. It was a fun demo and everyone enjoyed it.

How about a quick make and take? Try this one for a Matchbook Needle Case
http://www.make-it-do.com/make-it/needles-on-the-go/

I pre prepared the cover fusing fabric on two sides of cardstock. Cut them into the strips and participants assembled the rest. We ironed on tiny fusible fabric embellishments.

We had this technique demo-ed at a recent meeting. It was good to see, but would have liked more since I made the trip into the meeting for such a short demo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiuqSWQlefk Here is another demo that gives ideas to expand the information.

G'ma Kay 04-27-2011 07:00 AM

Prairie Points. After watching it twice, I still don't get it!

GGinMcKinney 04-27-2011 07:03 AM

How to end binding smoothly. I always need a refresher.
Also, Ricky Tims has a video on you tube.com on how to make a one seam flying geese quilt block. I practice with paper.
You could cut out the paper so they could practice along as you demo. It is really simple and makes a no fail flying geese with plenty of space for the 1/4" seam.

GMTA ... I was just about to post "one seam flying geese" ... good thing I read thru to the end!

Do Geese first, then follow with the 10 Minute block , as it's just a double up of the geese!

blackbearbetty 04-27-2011 07:38 AM

Watch a tute at Missouri star and do one of her demos.

Julie in NM 04-27-2011 07:39 AM

10 min block would be good too! Here's a link: http://bearcreekquilter.wordpress.co...rial-and-more/

Could you call the 2 or 3 newest quilters and ask them what they'd like to see?

Covered in Threads 04-27-2011 10:07 AM

Gosh, there are so many thoughts going thru my head right now to share along with all the previous ones that have already been suggested. I especially like the idea of personally calling a new quilter to see what may be of interest to them. So here goes, but I promise only a few
We have had our LQS come in and do basic maintenance and trouble shooting pointers for our guild on all of our machines. Then the following year they did a demo on using a serger - not necessarily quilting as much as techniques to use in sewing.
We also enlist local artists/guild members to do trunkshows.
This month, two of our gals are extremely talented in dyeing their own fabrics and they will be doing a trunkshow for us on their fabrics and finished quilts.
Earlier this year one of the gals showed us all the things she makes from second hand/recycled materials and for the most part not from cotton and not just quilts.
In Feb one of the gals took on the journey of quilting during the Civil War Era. She also passed out a cute kit to make during the discussion of a small pocket size sewing kit made of scrap pieces of wool/flannel/linen, something that was very common during this era.
We have also asked members from neighboring guilds to come share a few things - one was her amazing minature quilts.
Techniques are always fun but getting a bit of history, learnings new tricks of the trade, having demos on new products that are out there along the way just add to the adventure.
Quilters are an amazing group of people from all walks of life. Any thing you decide to share will be sure to help someone in your group. And for the others - it will either a refresher or just a means to help them to open up and show their techigue(s) for the same item. I'm still fairly new to the quilting portion of sewing and look forward to every thing all the others have to share. We all see things with different eyes. Just have fun and it will be sure to spread.

I love the tube quilting, and a lot of people have never seen it done!

fayzer 04-27-2011 12:27 PM

I saw a demo on making a scalloped edge quilt. Very interesting.

MerryQuilter 04-27-2011 12:59 PM

Tomorrow at our small little group I am teaching both the 10 min block cathederal and 3D pinwheels so quick and easy and fun! Heard about both on this board.

CQMadhatter 04-27-2011 02:10 PM

How about framed hexagons...I am addicted to them.

Just Me... 04-27-2011 02:34 PM

The Double Diamond Ruler would be a great demo. Goes quickly and cool results.
