Help, need a quilty gift for a guy

This is for my cousin i hardly ever see, but remember him at Christmas. Last year, I made him coasters and matching potholders. He loved them! what can I make small for a man of 31. Also on the inexpensive side about $10-12 range. thanks.

mamagrande 04-03-2016 06:07 PM

What about a TV remote caddy made with his favorite sports fabric. If he likes to BBQ, maybe a manly apron.

quiltingshorttimer 04-03-2016 06:08 PM

or some microwave bowl potholders--those where a super hit at Christmas.

lynnie 04-03-2016 06:12 PM

i thouhgt of the microwave bowl holders, but even when all 100% cotton is used, i've heard of fires.
I'd put in a note not to microw wave for more than 2 minutes at a time.

I also made him Christmas napkins, and a 10 min table runner, along with the coaster and potholders.

When my husband and I were first married we didn't have much cash so I was always trying to find something I could quilt that he might like. His favorite was a guitar strap. He's also a fly fisherman and he loves and still uses the fly wallets I made for him. Even though we can now afford to buy them, he still asks me to make them as gifts for his friends.

deedum 04-03-2016 06:34 PM

how about a phone pillow? this is the one I made and guys like it and use it. Can use hunting, fishing, golfing whatever material. several patterns out there if you google.

maybe a guy apron if he likes to cook?

deedum 04-03-2016 06:52 PM

I also like monogram tie or monogram tissue paper which is my favorite. monogram hankies but guys don't really use them anymore I take it. still a nice gift. ok that is I am out of ideas. Will set what others post.

deedum 04-03-2016 07:09 PM

ok, just one more. What about a bag sleeve? yOu know the kind you put your plastic bags in, everyone loves them. my dh has one in his garage and so our friend seen it and wanted one for his garage......
pinterest has tons of diy bag holders

Reusable grocery totes, or a boxy zipper bag for razor and travel toiletries.

DOTTYMO 04-03-2016 10:10 PM

A wallet for his money.

ManiacQuilter2 04-04-2016 03:43 AM

I think I read it safe for up to 3 minutes. Never have had a problem with the one my friend made for me. Another thing to make is a Mug Rug maybe in his sport's team color.

DebraK 04-04-2016 04:17 AM

How about a boxy zippered pouch? He could it use is as a shave kit, or a travel bag for his toiletries. You could fill it with something fun.

elly66 04-04-2016 04:31 AM

How about a potato bag (though I don't know if the same concerns for the bowl potholder holds here too. There's also fabric boxes and caddies.

I have made microwave bowl holders for everyone, but I do not microwave the holder, just the bowl. Then slide the bowl in and you can hold it without discomfort. The Warm Co. cautions against heating their Warm 'n Natural product, plus if you use All Purpose thread there is some poly that will melt.

I have been making "Bendy Bags". They will hold all your cords for your devices. The pattern is from Lazy Girl Designs.

Just Me... 04-04-2016 09:05 AM

I've made all my special fellas boxers with novelty prints. The good thing is that I can re-use the boxer pattern over and over and it is always a quick gift for everything from Easter baskets to Christmas stockings! :)

Mug rugs, pouches, denim strop (to sharpen his razors), pillow cases, microwave bowl cozy, coffee cup sleeve, electrical cord ties, cell phone pouch, lunch bag,...

Material Witness 04-04-2016 02:21 PM

So, with the microwave bowl holders, just add a fire extinguisher.

osewme 04-04-2016 03:21 PM

I've made a lot of those microwave bowl potholders & have some of my own that I've been using for about 3 years now. I've never had a problem with them & not heard of any that I've given as gifts. We use ours every single day for warming up food (be it soup, veggies, taco sauce, etc.) Be sure & use 100% cotton fabric, batting, & thread.

UncleGravy 04-04-2016 04:02 PM

Beer coozie

I have been using them for several years and no problems either. I have giving many away and no issues. I do make sure everything is a 100% cotton. Awesome gifts I think.

Uncle Gravy has a great idea every guy can love! At least from what I seen.

jmoore 04-05-2016 03:01 AM

I think an apron is a great idea...

Kris P 04-05-2016 03:56 AM

How about appliqué some EPP onto dish towels, or cut outs from manly fabric? When my sister married a dairy farmer, my mom appliquéd cows and tractors to some flour sack dish towels so he could help dry dishes... (never happened, to my knowledge, but it's a cute idea.)

I like this phone pillow idea but did not see any directions. Any one out in our group have directions for this nifty little gift? Christmas is only 8 months away! Tee-Hee-Hee. The blogger promised a tutorial but I only found a pattern to by from another source.

tkee 04-05-2016 04:35 AM

Shoe bags for his gym bag.

Chris G 04-05-2016 04:39 AM

Why not a fabric box as a catch all. Everyone usually finds a use for them. BTW, any time I've heard the microwave bowls cause fire, many sewer don't realize they've used poly wrapped cotton thread.

Gerbie 04-05-2016 04:49 AM

Apparently he has his own apt. or house, since you've made him potholders etc. how about some kitchen towels that button and hang over the stove handle or a bag to hold his plastic bags if he lives where they still allow plastic bags. Place mats or tablet or phone cover, throw pillows, wall hanging. I plan to make a scrappy denim bath mat for DD for Christmas to use up some of my large denim stash. Iif he cooks a lot and takes dishes to others a casserole carrier

I vote for the micro bowls. I got a call from my daughter that says "Hey Mom, they really worked" LOL Little DGD uses hers for ice cream!!

How about an Afghan made of scraps? Log Cabin or Rail Fence are good guy patterns, and you could "kill 2 birds with one stone," (get rid of scraps and make something a guy would like!)

How about organizers for his truck/car? There are many types from square ones to round up little things to bigger one that hang on the back of the seat with pockets. If you go to an auto store on line, you could get some good ideas there. If he is a golfer, you could make him some embroidered towels to hang from his bag or one of those seat covers to keep his butt from getting scorched from the hot seat in the sun. Maybe done in manly colors?

klswift 04-05-2016 09:50 AM

If you made him coasters and potholders, he sounds like he uses his kitchen! Why not make him aprons? I made my daughter and her boyfriend R2D2 and Darth Vader aprons and they love them.

quilting cat 04-05-2016 10:51 AM

Is he the type to ever use a pot-holder or oven-mitt?
Does he use re-usable shopping bags?
How about a small backpack for hiking or biking?

Covers for his golf clubs? Does he travel for his job? shoes bags for his suitcase. A funny funky male fabric pillowcase. Michael Miller has some choice fabrics. Flannel pj bottoms.
