I'm making a panel quilt 35" x 40 1/2", I'm going to do a border of flying geese with other borders around that, then more flying geese..........can you please help with what size flying geese border would be suitable.
I have never done flying geese before I'm a bit bamboozled by sizes here! Thankyou for your help! :D |
Flying geese (traditionally) are basically rectangles where the width is twice the height measurement.
Are those panel measurements above FINISHED or UNFINISHED? Are you shooting for some final quilt size? How big is the middle border going to be? I would probably start looking at FG that are 5" x 2.5" FINISHED. You could work that extra 1/2" in easily. Anything wider/larger might not look right for that size panel. Do you have a picture of it? |

Here are some diagrams of what the proportions would be of different sized flying geese (for your center panel 35"x40").
It's a starting point for you to decide on a look you prefer. FG 2,5x5 FG 1.25x5 FG 1.25x3 |
MTS, you are just the greatest with helping anyone who asks. Great info.

Well, clearly purple/lilac is out as a color choice.
Can you cut a piece of paper (even just plain white copy paper) that are the sizes I used and just place each on a side of the panel so we can see the relative proportions? Just color in the FG with a pencil - doesn't have to be pretty (or precision cut). And then post a picture again. It looks like a really, really big bear, so maybe he could handle the first example of Flying Geese - 2.5" x 5" (I had thought maybe it was too bulky). Whatever you decide on, I can easily put the measurements into EQ since it's already set up - that way you can get a count of how many FG you'll need. |

Post a pic. I'll be back in half an hour. ;-)
FYI - the middle border on the 1st diagram is 2.5" wide FINISHED. |
I can't help you with the sizes...but like picking up the gold of the leaves in the color of the flying geese....good luck to you, will be a lovely quilt
