Help!!! Pieced wholecloth pattern.....

I am looking for ideas for piecing a wholecloth type quilt for my daughter. She wants a wholecloth for her king sized bed.....she wants it pieced....we saw one somewhere but I can`t remember where. It was light colored...beiges and whites and a very simple pattern. I wanted to see it again for inspiration....I want to start buying fabric for it....does anyone remember seeing one on here?? I think I will try and get it done for next Christmas and surprise her....any help would be appreciated...thank you!!!

I have never seen a whole cloth pieced. I will be wacthing this thread. Hopw to see a picture of it.

Skittl1321 12-28-2012 07:57 AM

By definition, a wholecloth is not pieced.

It sounds like she just wants a quilt where the quilting design/texture creates as much of the pattern as the piecing does.

I know they are out there. My aunt did one year's ago by quilting on large muslin blocks, I believe 16 inch and putting them together. Unfortunately that was before good cameras! I'll take a look see on the web and get back to this thread.

Yes, that is techniquely not a whole cloth but only the quilting itself makes the design not the piecing.

noveltyjunkie 12-28-2012 08:00 AM

Do you mean a series of regular shaped blocks with feature quilting in each? You could pull that together yourself from multiple sources perhaps. It wouldn't be a whole cloth quilt though, from my understanding of that term.

lynnie 12-28-2012 08:01 AM

I made my son a white on white...it was blocks put tog to look like a wholecloth. Dont have a pic sorry.
why does it have to be pcd. I did mine that way because it was easier to do block by block.

huntannette 12-28-2012 08:07 AM

The one we saw was pieced but the fabrics kind of blended together....it was really different.....and it is her choice so i want to do it as she wants....after it is pieced I will treat it as if it was only one piece of fabric....so wish i could find the one i saw....i don`t remember exactly what the squares were .....if i don`t find one i`ll try and improvise...

the quilting should be the star i think, the piecing would be only background , but with some pattern but not being the main feature.....sheshhhh does it make sense??? lol

Try this. From your description I suspect it's the one Borntohandquilt made
or Feline Fanatic.

I also saw a disappearing nine patch in all lights (whites/beiges) that came out beautiful and with a look similar to Creme Brulee. Normally that is not my favorite pattern but it was beautiful in those colors.

huntannette 12-28-2012 10:44 AM

yes.....not my fav pattern either but in this context it is perfect

Your daughter needs to explain what exactly she wants. I suspect she means a "cheater cloth" quilt that is printed to show quilt blocks.

A whole cloth top is just that-------------one whole cloth.

Pieced is just that----------pieces to make a top.

Can't have both in one piece.

Not to be really stupid, but how else would you treat a finished top than as one whole?

granny216 12-28-2012 05:13 PM

I always thought a whole cloth was one solid piece of fabric like the hand quilted white on white quilt that I did. Will have to watch this for the pieced ones...It is new to me.

humbird 12-28-2012 05:44 PM

Maybe she is refering to monocramatic? (is that how you spell that? lol ) shades of one color.

jemma 12-28-2012 06:08 PM

check out fossil fern there is enough irregular pattern to satisfy a change in colour etc--some batiks may also work

huntannette 12-28-2012 06:51 PM

awesome ...I will....found the pattern and quilt that inspired me....just need to find the right fabric....

Well, some designs each block is quilted in its own design. No unity.

I understand what the op.is talking about now, but if it is pieced, it is not a wholecloth.

It seems to me that Charisma had posted a picture of a quilt that she had quilted that sounds like the one you described. You might check out her posts.

I have such a quilt pattern called
White-on-White Heirloom Quilt designed by Maud von Bergh-Arnoldus. It contains 16 patterns for quilted blocks and border. I have had it for 15 years and am planning on starting it this Spring. It was published by That Patchwork Place. When I make it, I am going to duplicate at least 4 blocks to make it longer and perhaps 4 more to make it wider as the finished quilt in this pattern is only 86" square. Hope this helps you in your search.

hcarpanini 12-29-2012 06:44 AM

I am pretty sure Thimbleberries had a pattern in one of their books. I will see if I can track it down..

huntannette 12-29-2012 06:56 AM

oh really? I will search for the pattern online...maybe i`ll get lucky.....sounds like what I was looking for...although the one posted in this post sure is nice.

Could you post the site for the pattern? I would be most interested in seeing what you have in mind. Sounds lovely.

Brenda M 12-29-2012 06:58 AM

Well you are getting lots of help and advice here so I just want to wish you luck with this quilt and please post some pictures during the process and the completed quilt as well. What frame and machine will you be using for this? I'm totally amazed at wholecloth quilting! Good Luck!

huntannette 12-29-2012 06:59 AM

I did see a beautiful wholecloth bed cover at Dillard's dept store some time back. I remember it because I loved it. It's price was $350.00. It had hugh squares and rectangles (maybe 25 x 25 and 20 by 40). All were different shades of very light beiges and taupes and placed randomly. If there was any pattern it too was very light and barely noticeable. The quilting was glorious and that was truely the star of this quilt.

huntannette 12-29-2012 07:21 AM

that sounds like what i want to make.....

I used this book 5 years ago on page 10 there is strip piecing using all beige fabric, with di tints of beige, more like strip piecing. I think this is what your daughter wants. I actually made the quilt because of the muted back ground. http://www.amazon.com/Super-Simple-S.../dp/1880972522 page 10 Mondriah is the name of the quilt.

My sister has the quilt now. I tried to send you a photo, did work.

And everyone is right, it is not a wholecloth, but a pieced cloth made to look whole

Raine 12-29-2012 07:51 AM

BTW I just uploaded an image of the quilt Mondrian (upside down) that is in the book. The raw quilt applique you could not put on. Hope this helps.

huntannette 12-29-2012 08:20 AM

i can`t see it...where did you post it???

If you want to correspond with me privately I will give you some suggestions for this project. It should be easy for you to do with existing paper designs and quilting stencils.

JanieH 12-29-2012 11:31 AM

That is gorgeous! I never would have thought of doing something like that! Really inspiring!
