I believe there is a 'quick' block made by piling the fabric (say four different) making random straight line cuts, then re-arrangeing them by shape in piles, stitching and re-cutting .... Does this sound familiar to anyone? Or is it total gobledegook! I would be most grateful for some help!
Thanks in anticipation.

TinkerQuilts 05-01-2011 09:47 AM

Sounds like One Block Wonder or Stack and Whack?

mimom 05-01-2011 09:49 AM

sounds like a bargello, if I spelled that right?

Summer Spice 05-01-2011 09:50 AM

If your looking for easy look up Stack and Whack.

Crazy shortcut quilts??????????????

Sneed 05-01-2011 09:52 AM

Could you be referring to the Stack and Whack method? I've not done it, but it sounds somewhat like what you are describing.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 05-01-2011 09:56 AM

If the cuts are random, I don't think it would be bargello would it. I thought those cuts needed to be precise.

It sounds like something I saw Ricky Timms do.....but for the life of me I don't know what he called it.

He made the cuts and then mixed the fabrics up so he could sew four blocks together.

PurplePassion 05-01-2011 09:57 AM

No , it isn't OBW. I know the one you are talking about , but can't find it right now.Just cut 6 squares of fabric 12", then stack them up evenly and cut through all layers 3 or 4 times , then pick a piece from the bottom and place it on top in it's spot. Sew the top blcok together , replacing a piece from each one.

Maybe this is what you are looking for. Google stack-n-slash and you more than likely will find more.

amma 05-01-2011 10:19 AM

Stack and Slash is what I have heard it called.

However many fabrics that are in your stack, are the amount of cuts(pieces) you want to end up with. You can cut each stack the same or differently.

I have seen it done with random cuts, or cutting them to form a star shape.

You rotate the pieces in each stack, so you end up with all different fabrics in each block :D:D:D

np3 05-01-2011 10:29 AM

Also called Stack and Whack.

KarenK 05-01-2011 10:38 AM

Could it be Stack the Deck by Karla Alexander?

I've done this one before! So, sew easy. Just remember, that if you cut a 9 inch block they are only going to be able to square up to a 7 1/2 because you are not allowing for any seam allowances. It looks like a mosaic . Use as many fabrics as you want, just turn them before you sew each together.

Bonbonary 05-01-2011 11:49 AM

Did you mean tube piecing? Here's a link to the Missouri Quilt you tube tutorial.

It's called stack and slash. You dont match the pattern like you do with a stack and whack. You just stack the fabrics and cut them and then rearrange the blocks and sew them together.

There is a pattern called Fat Quarter Shuffle that uses this technique using fat quarters. It makes a quilt similar to Yellow Brick road. It's fast, easy and fun.

Stack and whack.... there's a method to it, and yes... it can be really easy (like a S&W 9 patch block) or really hard. Check out the tutorials on this site, and the ones on youtube. It's fun!

I have 2 patterns, bought maybe 7 or 8 years ago, called Kwik Scrappy Star and Kwik Crazy Patch by Two Kwik Quilters,122 Batchelors Trail. Jacksonville,NC28546. Very good instructions and fun to make. Start with 12 inch squares and finish with a 9 inch block. I think anyone who knows the technique could make their own designs (I'm not that clever!)

PenelopeG 05-01-2011 12:05 PM

Thank you all so much - can't beat this board for all the help, thank you!

the one i did, was called "crazy 9 patch" or "stack the deck"

Krystyna 05-02-2011 02:59 AM

Stack the Deck by Karla Alexander. Here's her website http://www.saginawstreetquilts.com.

I love using this technique to make crazy quilts with the QAYG method. So much fun.

whinnytoo 05-02-2011 03:02 AM

Is that what they call a Puzzle quilt block?

marmar1 05-02-2011 03:04 AM

Anita Grossman Solomon has several books out on this technique. She shows multiple types of results. One is a type of "crazy quilt".

watterstide 05-02-2011 03:36 AM

tutorial for crazy 9 patch:
http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransso...ice-quilt.html

this is the way i did the one in the picture posted above..

it was done "quilt as you go" method.

jitkaau 05-02-2011 03:43 AM

Colourwash and bargello are done like this and so are some of Ricky Tims' quilts.

dixiechunk 05-02-2011 03:44 AM

Unless the word "random" means something different across the pond I don't think bargello or stack and whack fits the bill. However, stack and slash might work and I found the pattern years ago on-line for free.

Lindsey 05-02-2011 03:47 AM

It could be a take five or turning twenty where you cut the fabric and take the first one in the pile and put it on the bottom and then the next pile put two on the bottom etc.

LivelyLady 05-02-2011 03:54 AM

Could you be thinking of "Layer Em Up" by Sharyn Craig?
She has a tute where she uses 4 - 6 squares, stacks them, and cuts them then takes peices of the top and puts them on the bottom so as she sews production line each block is different? Just google it. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll try to find it again for you.

ladycaller 05-02-2011 03:57 AM

Its called a crazy shortcut quilt. I made one(large queen) and enjoyed making it. I could use lots of the machines decortived stitches. It use to be on utube video.

quiltinNsmilin 05-02-2011 03:59 AM

There's another pattern that starts with a 15-inch block. You cut two parallel vertical lines then two parallel horizontal lines.... then you stack the pieces in different ways. It is called magic tile.
You sew black fabric between the resulting pieces and it makes
a gorgeous stained glass look. It's more work than the stack and whack but the effect is wonderful - especially if you use fabrics that have some gold in them.

jahaper 05-02-2011 04:02 AM

I believe it is called stack the deck.

I think its the Stack and Wack, do some research on the net.

drdolly 05-02-2011 04:09 AM

There is a pattern out by Debbie Bowles called "Bent Pieces". Go to here web page called "Maple Island Quilts" and look for the above pattern. I took a class from her and it was so easy and fun.

Traditional 05-02-2011 04:17 AM

Are you referring to a KALEIDOSCOPE CRAZY PATCH
start with 9 squares?

olebat 05-02-2011 04:20 AM

Could also be the Ricky Tims convergence method.

WMUTeach 05-02-2011 04:25 AM

My quilt guild did a mystery quilt that sounds much like what you are describing. I will contact the leader to see if she has a finished photo and dig out my directions. My quilt is in the UFO pile. The results I have seen are beautiful. I'll contact you directly when I get the info.

I have made one of these and just went through my patterns quickly but couldn't find the name. It is a "slash and shuffle" technique. basically no rules, just cut FQ at various angles and then shuffle them and sew back together. Square it up and sew the blocks together. Will try to find a picture to attach.

This is my beautiful daughter!! Also, I made it to match her room, which was bubble gum pink, teal and black.

Aurora 05-02-2011 05:15 AM

We just did one we called a Fast Patch Crazy Quilt. It was fast, fun and easy.

setting3 05-02-2011 05:26 AM

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but it sounds similar to this tutorial.
