The butterfly is beautiful -- where did you find that applique? I'd take the borders off and restart -- measure carefully. Take a little off each side as you trim so you don't wind up with one side measuring different than the other. Good luck!

Very pretty, would be a beautiful quilt. Just follow the instructions for the step you are doing. Try not to think ahead, I think that causes some problems. Just rip off this border and use the size it says to cut it. I'm sure that will be right and what you need. Good luck.

Add 1/2" strips to all sides, sew on with a 1/4" seam. This will give you 1/4" border all around making your block 6.5".

just replace the trim if you have any more fabric, if not add onto it.

Error on what I said earlier, sorry about that! Looking at the white part of the block, it appears to look to be 5.5" after sewing your border on, so the original white block was 6 inches. It will take a 3/4 inch border sewn on all sides for you to end up with a 6.5'' unfinished block. Once sewn you will only have 1/4" border around the block.

I agree with this. If you have a 6" white block and add a 1" border, the 2-- 1/4" seams total
1/2", so you add 3/4"(border) and 5 3/4" (white) and that is 6 1/2" Don't trim!

Why did you trim the border down another 1/2"? If you had added the 1" border that would have given you a 6.5" block.

Can you applique a leaf to cover the short stem?

I agree with scisyb. You need the border to be 3/4 inch after sewing it on. This gives you the outer seam allowance that you need. The block will sew down to a 6 inch block after sashing.
