I would not quilt over top of the fairies. I'm new to the site so I don't know all the abbreviations yet but I would do the border, then the pinwheels, then a small quilting around the fairies but not through them. Does that make sense to anyone else?

granny_59 07-01-2010 02:05 PM

thanks for the encuragement. I have the machingers also but it must look funny sewing in underwear (its unbearable hot right now) and wearing gloves......
Again midnight over here. I am sure I will have a FMQ dream!?

BTW: I think it is a good idea to go by according colors but do you think I can quilt with normal sewing thread as i only have off white and blue machine quilting thread?

Not so sure I'll get that visual out of my head for awhile! LOL

Try samples of the designs you want with the thread you have. If I don't have the quilting thread I want, I use Gutterman's sewing thread. If your machine likes it, go for it!

Here is a picture of the swirls I just did. I also did the triangles on mine. It blended with some of the stars, but contrasted with the background.

sewingladydi 07-01-2010 02:57 PM

However you decide to quilt it, you did a great job on that quilt.

Sharoni 07-02-2010 04:39 AM

Gosh Granny_59!! If that's one of your first quilts I am totally intimidated!! It is flat out fabulous! The colors are vibrant, the stitching sharp, and the delight in thinking of that baby is obvious all over it! What a treasure. Cross hatch stitch it. Straight lines at an angle. Kinda like squares but from top left to bottom right.

Nanjun 07-02-2010 04:57 AM

Beautiful quilt.

granny_59 07-02-2010 05:00 AM

thanks Sharoni

actually it is my fifth.

you dont know what this feedback means to me! I am sweating under this quilt for hours and are just halfway through with the SID. This gives me much more time to think about the visible quilting.

@Katier: your quilting is stunning! I will sure practice on the triangles.

sahm4605 07-02-2010 05:03 AM

decorative stitch around the embroydered squares, and then a simple all over pattern or just simple decorative stitches on the diagnal around the center section would be nice. post how you do it.

quiltlin 07-02-2010 05:56 AM

The quilt is beautiful and I agree, just an all-over meandering would be terrific. You don't want to take away from the design of the quilt.

mhansen6 07-02-2010 06:28 AM

Oh my gosh, what a beautiful quilt. The child who gets this is very lucky indeed. You do wonderful work.

deedles215 07-02-2010 06:54 AM

...I don't think it would matter what you did for the quilting; it is beautiful. I'm sure that's not what you wanted to hear... but great job!

SSTeacher 07-02-2010 07:04 AM

Granny: Love your quilt. The workmanship is great, as well as being colorful. Thanks for sharing.

Sannianni 07-02-2010 08:01 AM

steelecg 07-02-2010 08:15 AM

leamelon 07-02-2010 09:20 AM

--i just love hand quilting. Especially on something as beautiful as your quilt. I pd one hundred doillars to rent time on a quilting machine for a baby quit I keep that quilt to remind me. - have stippled a few small quilts but by the time you get the motionbright its over. Sooooooo. good luck whatever you decide.

alica1367 07-02-2010 09:51 AM

Love the quilt. How did you get you pinwheels to look like that?

bstanbro 07-02-2010 10:25 AM

You can also just do a straight line grid, which is very forgiving.

janb 07-02-2010 10:51 AM

Did you write that this is your first quilt? It is REALLY lovely.
What a nice job...you must be real proud...You should see my first...I use it for a baby changing pad !

denveremerson 07-02-2010 11:50 AM

You did a brilliant job on this quilt!!

alica1367 07-02-2010 12:19 PM

My daughter does a meandering effect with a few loops every so often looks great on almost and quilt. The loops are kinda like long hand e's.

cka 07-02-2010 01:27 PM

With some much prominent geometry, try making your meandering a little loopy or swirls, maybe a few small flowers.

sylvia77 07-02-2010 02:21 PM

I'm for putting a babtist fan or a clam shell pattern. It's a beautiful quilt!

I can not even express what this feedback means to me!! Thank you so much. The making of the 3D pinwheel you can find if you search: 3D pinwheel, how many layers into one seam. Sorry I dont know how to make a link.....

I am really working my but off on this one and the picture shows how far I got today.
As suggested I will try the swirl with the according colors on each pinwheel, sorry dont know anymore who recommended that and on the pyramid border I will try what Katier showed me on HST.

katier825 07-02-2010 02:26 PM

I see progress! Looking great!

granny_59 07-02-2010 02:40 PM

thanks so much Katier

I just try to fill in with accuracy where I lack from talent  Some kind of swiss precision.
Did so much of stiching and undoing today knowing that only quilters can tell the difference but I only do want your approval

mary 07-02-2010 02:48 PM

Love the beautiful quilt.

kwiltkrazy 07-02-2010 03:41 PM

First off this is a gorgeous quilt you have done a marvelous job of piecing it, and it is going to be very loved.

I would first stitch in the ditch around all the blocks, then quilt (meander around all the back ground(things you don't want to stick out) kind of densely. Like the bg of the fairies, and in the pin wheels do one color meandered, leave the other unquilted. The border pinwheels leave unquilted and meander in the back ground. Maybe a leaf vine in the thin solid borders, or just leave them outlined.

Whatever you do it will be beautiful. Enjoy the process.

Don't forget to label it.

Lucinda

kwiltkrazy 07-02-2010 03:46 PM

The quilt is looking great. Keep up the good work.

galvestonangel 07-02-2010 04:38 PM

That is a lucky baby who gets that quilt. You did a great job, it is beautiful. Love it! You could do QID in the center and squigleys on the rest. Any way you do it will be fine.

This babyblanket will be the first quilt I will give away outside of the family and I want it to be good, as I really had a lot of work so far.

If I would do FMQ do I have to make a different pattern on the borders or does all over pattern means it is made all over? What (easy) pattern would you make on it?
Having not much experience with FMQ should I better go with QID?
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

Granny

Hi, love the quilt. so cheerful. especially the border ! this is a great quilt for SID.even easier is the serpentine stitch over the
seams. fast, cute for a kid. not too wide. you will find that FM all over takes much more time than doing the straight seams. with all the piecing, there are so many seams you could choose, just so you quilt according to the batting suggestions of width between lines. for kids quilts, I always make sure I am no more than 4 inches apart, but just go with your block size. that can change all over the quilt. use your walking foot. smitty
