Just a couple of month ago I did not know that sandwich is not only food....
This babyblanket will be the first quilt I will give away outside of the family and I want it to be good, as I really had a lot of work so far.

If I would do FMQ do I have to make a different pattern on the borders or does all over pattern means it is made all over? What (easy) pattern would you make on it?
Having not much experience with FMQ should I better go with QID?
Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated

Granny

cannot ans. but want to say the quilt looks so nice ! I respect the time, effort and Love you put into it !

Jim's Gem 06-30-2010 01:13 PM

You can just do a meander all over the entire quilt and it would look great. You could do something different in the borders if you want but when I "meander" over a quilt I usually cover the whole quilt with the same pattern
Think of a large stipple. Or try a loop -de- loop, not real small.
I usually use a varigated thread when quilting like that.

JudyG 06-30-2010 01:20 PM

What a darling quilt. I agree, an all-over meandering stitch would be really nice.

Sewsweet 06-30-2010 01:23 PM

I love your quilt, an all-over would do.

granny_59 06-30-2010 01:24 PM

thanks so much.
With big stipple all over do you go by "rows"? And how do you make the pattern look like all over? I mean that the rows snug into each other............sorry cant explain any better

Jim's Gem 06-30-2010 01:48 PM

It's hard to explain without a picture, I'm at work and can't post one.
not by rows, by "area". You will want to look at the quilt and have all the stitching blend so that you can't really tell what the "area's" are. Or row for that matter
If someone else can't help you with a picture, I will try and check tonight when I get home to see if I have a picture of what I am talking about.
Hopefully someone else can help too!

granny_59 06-30-2010 01:53 PM

you are really a gem!

I have to drop out anyway as it is close to midnight over here. I know that website with the 365 quiltpatterns, but it irritates me that the lady is just showing them on little patches.
I dont have a clue on how to get them on a whole quilt.

thanks so much
Granny

Beautiful work. Sorry I don't know about Free Motion Quilting so I can not help you./Regards, Dorothy

Ditter43 06-30-2010 08:47 PM

Whatever you decide, the quilt is fantastic! If you decide to fmq, practice on something for a while till you feel comfortable with doing it.I practice some before each new quilting session to loosen up!

bailey 06-30-2010 09:07 PM

Wow, what a pretty quilt! Some lucky person is going to love it. Sorry, can't help with the quilting pattern though.

franie 06-30-2010 09:18 PM

Love that quilt. Just go for the FMQ~!

Gramof6 06-30-2010 10:22 PM

I just love your quilt & you did a wonderful job on it. It's beautiful.

For the FMQ or meandering, when I do it, I start at the top left and work to the far right dropping down to the next row so to speak, not really stopping but carrying it on. That goes from the right working to the left. That drops down to the 3rd row, working back to the right. Just think of the shape of jigsaw puzzle pieces, not really showing where you start or stop. I hope this helps and is clear. I'm not real good at explaining in words.

deirdre ann 06-30-2010 10:40 PM

oh granny, its just beautiful, well done. some-one will be very lucky to get this quilt.
i cant help you at all, im a total novice & dont understand what fmq & qid are!!! yet!!

Gwyn 06-30-2010 10:42 PM

What a wonderful quilt. I don't know anything about FMQ, but deciding on a stitching pattern for a quilt is the hardest thing I do. Any help for hand quilters?

kwiltkrazy 06-30-2010 11:04 PM

When you stipple all over you do not pay any attention to the quilt pattern just fill in the space.

you should work from the middle out.

granny_59 07-01-2010 02:47 AM

thanks all of you.
I never did an allover pattern and I am afraid of...........well everything  loosing overview, trapping eareas where I cant go back or destroying the effect of the pyramids by meandering over!?
Do you know any good sites about FMQ. I only know this 365 patterns site and that lady always makes just a little patch.

Would it be an idea to make something just into the solid part of the flat pinwheel to make the printed one stick more out and doing something little on the frames around the angles and then again on the yellow/green border? to start with....

I just have to work this afternoon and then my weekend starts. Cant wait to get to the sewingmachine

Quilt4u 07-01-2010 02:53 AM

Beautiful.

I love what Judi Madsen does with triangles. Check out her blog to this date Thursday, February 11, 2010

granny_59 07-01-2010 04:07 AM

thanks for that link. Could only take a short look as I have to go back to work  will check in the evening.

Teresa 54 07-01-2010 07:05 AM

Your quilt is beautiful. I am a professional quilter, If it were mine, I would = in the ditch around the applique.
Curved quarter inch every triangle square i.e all piecing. by the time you make it to the boarders, you will have the curved quarter inch in your brain, I would continue it into the border even if there is no triangles-act like they are.

Nancy O. 07-01-2010 07:18 AM

Your baby quilt is just beautiful, gorgeous, awesome etc.!!!!

I am no help with the fmq. I have only made 2 quilts in class and only stitch in the ditch. I am learning from this wonderful board and this thread. I will fmq my next quilt.

I think whatever you do will be just wonderful and the new baby and family will love it.

Did you use a pattern for this quilt, or did you design it yourself?

Thanks, Nancy O.

Pineapple Princess 07-01-2010 07:29 AM

Beautiful! FMQ would look great!

granny_59 07-01-2010 07:48 AM

Thanks, Nancy O.[/quote]

It is my own design and I will name it guardian angel.......unless I wreck it with FMQ

@Teresa: what is a curved quarter inch?? I know all three words but together in terms of quilting pattern I do not have a clue

picture a square, quilting one side of the square, start quilting from one corner of the square, gracefully extending out 1/4" and ending back at the next corner - now go to the next corner, extending out 1/4" and back to the next corner - am I clear? did you ever see the japanese shorbi (spelling?)quilting it ends up looking like interlocking circles, I will try to find something and post, hard to do today, I am at work. this can be continuous throughout the entire quilt without stopping and starting again.

Jim's Gem 07-01-2010 08:14 AM

Oops, I was supposed to post a close-up picture for you when I got home last night. It was too crazy. Here I am at work again and cannot post a picture. I'm sorry.

Can someone show her close up of some meandering?

granny_59 07-01-2010 08:17 AM

   so sorry......do you mean something like echoquilting a quarter inch apart?
No hurry at all, I will make a couple of testpatches before I dare to start with the quilt

boah - I love it too!! But this is all out of my reach. Will see whether I live long enough to get close to that......

littlehud 07-01-2010 09:16 AM

A meandering stitch would look great. It a fun and easier way to quilt it and looks so nice. Give it a try.

No, not echo quilting, this is a sort of just meander all over. Kinda like a winding road or a river that is flowing back and forth across a meadow.

If you know what a stipple is, think of much bigger scale.

Teresa 54 07-01-2010 10:31 AM

I looked at the blog for Judi Madsen.
3rd or 4th picture down shows what I call curved quarter inch.

Silence gives consent

DH thinks anyhow that I am going nuts wearing gloves this time a year........

I think I will practice on these swirls by tomorrow. Just picture them in better shape and in the white part of the fabric. Dont you think it adds some movement?

thanks so much again for the support
Granny

katier825 07-01-2010 01:51 PM

The swirls look great! They are very forgiving to mistakes too. If it makes you more comfortable, you could try to match the top thread to the color of each block. After a few quilts, I'm just now getting brave enough to use a contrasting color.

On your first sample with the 1/4 curved triangles, the bottom right looks pretty good. There is definitely a learning curve with FMQ. Don't forget, once it's washed and puckers up a little, what you consider mistakes, others won't even notice. :)

katier825 07-01-2010 01:52 PM

What kind of gloves are you wearing? I like the machingers. They are lighter than the gardening gloves and fit so well, I can even change the bobbin with them on.

akrogirl 07-01-2010 02:00 PM

Can't help you on the quilting since all I've done so far is SID, but I just wanted to say how much I love this quilt. I love the pattern and your choice of colors. The recipient is one lucky person.
