With her unbending attitude, I don't think I would like to teach with her. Surely the students will pick up on the tension which will be present in the room and that might be a "downer" to the students. Is she trying to play "one-upmanship?

I think that what it's called isn't all that important as long as we're expressing ourselves and enjoying our own results.

But when it's entered into a judged show, the judging rules count. I no longer show my quilts for judging so I'm not sure what the rules are currently for applique. If you're using any zigzag stitch it can't be the quilting stitch.

This is my example: if applique is attached with a zigzag stitch:
For your own pleasure it doesn't matter if the zigzag shows on the back as the quilting stitch.
For judging, zigzag stitching can not show on the back of the quilt. So the zigzag is done with the top and batt. Then the back is added and the quilting is completed.

As to friendship; a true friend is hard to find. I wouldn't let an argument about what we call a hobby get in the way of friendship. This is a priority issue, what's a higher priority: friendship or a hobby? Also, a true friendship should have encouragement not criticism. Only you can decide this.

Its still applique! Just done in a different way. I love applique. And I only do raw edge applique. Due to health issues that is the only way my hands will let me do it. So I am so glad when there is more then one way to do things like this! Just teach your class and the ones that come want to learn your technic. Don't worry about the other lady. You can never please every one no matter how hard you try. To me your an artist that works her art work with fabric. So its your form of art and so you get to teach it your way!

I don't know if reason can settle this argument. Ego and pride seems to be a strong element. People who go behind your back to get their point across are playing unfairly, and don't care what Webster has to say. I hope you will be able to resolve this civilly. But I have my doubts about that. You could make a poster or hand outs with Webster's explanation of both words, with examples of each samples. I would draw boundaries of how we will proceed, allowing for each to teach their method without being put down by comments from the other. And when talking to shop owners it will be together so no confusion or misunderstanding can occur. If this isnt accepted by her, then she is dishonest. Break ties.

I'm wondering why you care so much. She would be a former friend of mine. I'm of the age, I'm past drama, from anyone. If someone continually puts me down...........no way. I don't quilt but I've appliqued many ways in my 75 years of life, fused, raw edge, turned edge. Believe me, walk away before it twists you. It's your talent at stake.

Hmmm
How about calling your class: Traditional hand applique and Modern raw edge applique?
Keep it simple and clear.

Would your friend be swayed by documentation? Show her books or magazines that use the term fusible applique and not collage. If there is a quilter she respects (Fons, Burns), find where that quilter uses the phrase fusible applique. If this doesn't convince your friend, ask her to show you a book where collage is used as a term for fusible applique.

I just did an "advanced search" for "collage" in the entire post on this forum.

Several posts/threads showed up.

Thanks bearisgray. I took a look at a handful of the threads that are titled collage quilts. They are almost all animal quilts designed using prints only, many times flowers. They are gorgeous. Im assuming they’re fusible but not sure.

My fusible applique work does NOT fit in with these at all. It seems like collages may be a subset of fusible applique or any applique. Btw there was one traditional collage in there too.
