I though all bargellos were made by sewing strips together, cutting them apart side to side, then sewing them back together with moving the strips up or down. That sounds like so much more work! This surprises me!

Here is a lihk that can probably explain better

EagarBeez - I love that you used an Excel spreadsheet to draw the bargello layout.

Here's a Bargello version made by another member here (smockingRN):

You can see how changing some of the squares to rectangles changes the flow of the curve to something other than a zig-zag. Also, if you changed the square to be a rectangle (horizontal), the curve would/could also flow across the quilt.

It's a really elegant design, and the color selection (with the value changes) is lovely.

I was just thinking of making a quilt like this. Probably use 2" or 3" squares though. 5 just seems too big.

for those of you who own eq 6/7, how can it help with creative bargello designs?

If you do a search of "Bargello" it should take you to quilt layouts. Scroll down and there should be an example of a Bargello quilt - with a basic description of doing it via the "pieced blocks strips style."

Basically, you're designing each strip separately (like a row quilt except vertical), varying the width of each vertical column. Then you would color each block accordingly to get your design.

Here are some stunners from the EQ contest site:

Enjoy playing!
