This bargello is using 5 in squares only. I am making it with 12 colors. The diagram shows placement of the 12 colors.. On the right is a chart, showing the amount of blocks needed. The colors are used..one for each pattern.
This is for a queen/king quilt

Rebecca VLQ 12-05-2010 07:19 AM

I have a question...can you still call it a bargello when all the squares are the same size? I thought changing the size was a requirement, otherwise it's something else. It's not Trip Around the World though, because that's repeating diamond shaped squares, right?

amma 12-05-2010 07:24 AM

It is a bargello :D Some designs are just more complex than others :D:D:D

EagarBeez 12-05-2010 07:41 AM

they have a site or two that gives directions for making a beginners bargello. that is where I got my idea from
Here is a link....

^^^Thanks! I'll have to add this to "the list"! :D

littlehud 12-05-2010 08:56 AM

That is going to be beautiful. And yes it is a bargello even if the squares are all the same size. That's how I made mine and it's a favorite.

craftybear 12-05-2010 12:29 PM

awesome, thanks

ann clare 12-05-2010 01:09 PM

Beautiful. Thanks.

dreamer2009 12-05-2010 01:11 PM

this would be neat to create in a watercolor

twixbar 12-05-2010 01:16 PM

Really pretty.

To me it looks more like a ripple afgan pattern.

Barb_MO 12-05-2010 05:15 PM

I would consider it a bargello. This is a good starting point in designing any number of pattern of bargello.
You can start making your blocks smaller as you go across the quilt. You could make the second vertical row 4 1/2 inches, third row 3 in. and so on down to about 1/2 in. and then increase back to the 5 in. Them repeat. You would have to make more vertical row to get the same width.

Barb,what's in your lap?

Connie in CO 12-05-2010 05:23 PM

I see only twelve strips.

That is a Christmas Cathedral Window Quilt that I have in my UFO's for many many years. I used to work on it in December and on our vacation trips at Christmas. Then put it away one year and haven't go it out again.

Trip Around the World isn't diamonds; it is squares. You start with a middle square of some color, put four squares of a different color around it (one touching each side of the original square) and then repeat, surrounding each round with a different color. You can use as many colors as you like, or only three....

eiltcoq 12-06-2010 05:21 AM

Eagerbeez, Thanks for designing this Bargello. It saved me alot of time and planning. The counts on the right are a great addition. This is one of the quilts that I plan to do in 2011.
Thanks, again for your efforts. Eiltcoq.

Thank you for sharing. I hope to do a bargello soon.

MaggieLou 12-06-2010 06:36 AM

This may be a stupid question but what is the minimum number of colors you need to make a bargello?

Connie in CO 12-06-2010 07:02 AM

5 inch squares ok,you must start up at the top left.Have you gotten your fabric yardage figured out?I think I'm going to use my stash. This sure would help getting rid of a lot of it.

I bought a Yd

Momofthree 12-06-2010 08:10 AM

I have wanted to do one of these but was very intimidated when I would start to read the pattern directions. This chart is so helpful, it makes me think that I can give it a try. I will have to add this to my list for 2011.

Well, I have a strange question.

I though all bargellos were made by sewing strips together, cutting them apart side to side, then sewing them back together with moving the strips up or down. You said that this one was made with squares. Do others make their bargellos with squares also? Are they all made starting with squares? (or rectangles?)

That sounds like so much more work! This surprises me!

AVQuilter 12-06-2010 12:07 PM

Love your chart and design...on my list for next year.
Thanks so much!!

Dkm 12-06-2010 01:42 PM

this is great. Did you also figure the material amounts.

you can use as many colors/patterns as you wish

EagarBeez - I love that you used an Excel spreadsheet to draw the bargello layout.

Here's a Bargello version made by another member here (smockingRN):
http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-80122-1.htm

You can see how changing some of the squares to rectangles changes the flow of the curve to something other than a zig-zag. Also, if you changed the square to be a rectangle (horizontal), the curve would/could also flow across the quilt.

It's a really elegant design, and the color selection (with the value changes) is lovely.

ljsunflower 12-06-2010 02:47 PM

I was just thinking of making a quilt like this. Probably use 2" or 3" squares though. 5 just seems too big.

peabee 12-06-2010 04:13 PM

for those of you who own eq 6/7, how can it help with creative bargello designs?

If you do a search of "Bargello" it should take you to quilt layouts. Scroll down and there should be an example of a Bargello quilt - with a basic description of doing it via the "pieced blocks strips style."

Basically, you're designing each strip separately (like a row quilt except vertical), varying the width of each vertical column. Then you would color each block accordingly to get your design.

Here are some stunners from the EQ contest site:

Enjoy playing!

I did a bargello heart quilt (first quilt I ever made) It used 12 different fabrics also. I found it to be east and beautiful.
I like that yours is very bright and colorful.

great quilt.
