hexagon quilts
I have started a large project I am making a king size quilt with 3-in hexagons. I am still in the cutting out stage and I will be cutting out 4,000 little hexagons. I will also be hand sewing the whole quilt. Plus I have a DD that wants a quilt like mine but bigger hexagons so her's will be 5-in ones. I have ordered her paper pieces now I have to order mine. I still have to figure out my lay out for my quilt not sure of flowers, diamonds, or stars. At this point I do know that black is my color going around to make my design pop out. As for my DD's quilt it will be just random children's fabrics that I already have around the house from making some of their clothes and name pillows.

I have started a hexagon quilt also. I am using 2 1/2" squares of fabric. However, I am making mine a scrappy one. There will be no duplicates of fabrics and the layout will be random. The hexies make up so quickly and it helps me pass the time!

I applaud anyone who takes on a project with all hand sewing. I think it will be a wonderful heirloom to leave for the family. I can almost see it in my mind.

There is a quick way to do hexagons if you don't mind a seam down the centre. Draw a hexagon on paper. Cut in half exactly. Add 1/4 seam allowance on all sides of the 2 sections. Cut out on fabric join the diagonals in a row then join rows. My mind has just gone when it came to joining diagonals so have a go. Sorry.

I'm working on a hexagon quilt now also. Using 1 inch hexagons. It will be queen size. Nearly done with the piecing. This is my 3rd. If you go to the quilt gallery and click on GFG quilts, you will get lots of inspriation for layouts. Some real beauties there. Good luck with your quilt.

I made a 3/4" hex gfg about 55 x 65, it's my kitties because it doesn't match anything in the house. came out pretty

I never thought I would ever make a hand pieced quilt. Then, I started playing with some EPP hexagons. I am using 1.5 inch hexies and over the last year it has come together quite nicely. Who knows when it will be finished, but I have enjoyed working on it. It will be a very generous full size/queen.

I also applaud, anyone, that does hex's. I had a lady friend give me aGRGarden quilt top. She cut the pieces out when she was 10-11 yrs old. Anyhow, I hand quilted everyone of those hex's(3,000-3,500). It wasn't any problem for me doing the hand quilting. But just thinking on sewing all those hex's together, and getting them sewed accurately.

THANKS for all your thoughts insights and kind words.

I am not into handpiecing, and my DD has asked for a hexagon quilt, so I have found a tutorial on YouTube showing how to machine piece hexagons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQG0V42O0fI
Or you can search on YouTupe: Machine Piecing Hexagons. |
