I have in hiding by mine and don't know what I did when I signed up. I am in Texas. Howdy

svenskaflicka1 05-08-2011 06:43 AM

there are some of us who are involved in the internet on many levels. we grow overly cautious about revealing information of any kind to others that we don't personally know. if someone asks where i'm from, i will probably tell them--but i will remain "in hiding" in general, just to decrease the chance that someone might see it that i would prefer not.

sorry. i teach my students at the hospital to "cultivate your paranoia. it will be your best friend." if something bothers you, pay attention to that instinct. i offer the same to you. if something makes you uncomfortable, pay attention to that. revealing too much makes me uncomfortable. privacy issues (just like at the hospital, again)

I was in hiding because I never filled in my profile the first time I wanted to post. Then, i got lazy and also wanted the perfect photo for my avatar. Thanks to the prompting today I have filled in my profile, added a photo --there never will be a perfect one.

meow meow 05-08-2011 06:54 AM

Debbie you are SEW cool and I love your avatar. I too probably shouldn't post some of what I say but I love this site and will not be made to be in fear. Dance away kitty dance away. Where do some people get their avatars?

Jo Mama 05-08-2011 07:03 AM

Let's hope they just forgot to fill in their location. They can't all be in a witness protection program. :hunf:

And I have had members have me send things to secret pals so the post mark is different and throws their secrets off. It is so fun. We are like big kids playing in a large sandbox of life. All is good. Being mysterious is a fun thing too. And then there are those who post all about everything, everywhere on the board. Ahem...me? ♥♥

Well said Debbie!

Now I usually keep them guessing because I am in Bikini Bottom but most usually find out where I live through the VSMS thread. I like to see where folks are also but I think its ingenious sending you the "Secret Angel" and having it come from your neck of the woods. Your right about all of this cyber crap going around but in here we are all pretty much family and I really appreciate everything that the Mod Squad does to make it like it is.

No, some us are/were in the [witless] protection program and I need all the help I can get. That is why I rely on the wonderful folks on this board!

No one will find you if you only
list your state.

OK OK - after reading this, I went back and updated my profile. I too was waiting until I felt more comfortable on this board. Thanx for the nudge.

J Carol 05-08-2011 07:43 AM

yes. you're missing several hoo-has about this subject. and not friendly ones, either.

a lot of people don't want to be found. they think someone will hunt them down.

marymay 05-08-2011 07:47 AM

I could not have said it better then Debbie.I fill the same as she does. To much time is wasted on fear in this world.

Well said.

JanetLW 05-08-2011 08:07 AM

Just updated mine as well! Thanks for the post.

munchkinmama 05-08-2011 08:43 AM

I love to see where people are from. I am always looking for someone from where I am or at least close to me.

Kutnso 05-08-2011 09:15 AM

A lot of the members "in hiding" disclose their locations when they send messages. Has anyone else noticed this??? Plus, why not just give the name of your state???
Curious, Kutnso

Ditto

bearisgray 05-08-2011 09:51 AM

Guess it comes down to a personal preference.

Most of the time I really never notice the member's location.

Some folks do put a LOT of very personal stuff on here - and it is accessible to ANYONE, ANY WHERE, ANY TIME - that has an internet connection.

Just think of it as being on the front page of your local newspaper - if you wouldn't put it there, keep it off the internet.

Marty K 05-08-2011 10:02 AM

When i first joined i didn't know about a "profile", thus no personal details and was listed as "in hiding" for lack of pertinent info.

Marty K 05-08-2011 10:03 AM

hi sewmorethings!

I also worked full time until age 72. So if I have offened you or anyone else on the board by not listing my address I am so sorry. I am fron Prichard, West Virginia and proud of it.

Hi, Wolverine! You and I are the same age, and like you, I do very well. I am from Texas, which is a big place to be from, and in hiding because it's fun. Reminds me of a poem I used to read to my grandchildren. "I'm hiding, I'm hiding and no one knows where. All they can see of me is my toes and my hair..."

When I was a newspaper reporter, I learned that many people are in hiding for a reason--crazy ex-husband, witness protection program, bill collectors, ad infinitum--and so did not take pictures or give their names in news stories.

If you are on the Internet anywhere, you can be tracked and if you have a cell phone you can be tracked. But, it requires effort to do it. If people I don't know want to find me, they'll have to put a little effort into it.

Hang loose. froggyintexas

hi Froggy and Wolverine....i'm part of the "75 club" too. Must seem so old to some but funny how we don't feel so different than we did years ago .....in our heads and hearts that is! :)

This is what was told to me too when I posed the same question some time back. Makes sense for that reason. I've never been involved with a secret pal swap so not sure what that is either.

Kutnso 05-08-2011 10:23 AM

Wonderful attitude all members of the "75" club.!!!
Keep on trucking,Kutnso

wanda lou 05-08-2011 10:24 AM

It always irked me when people told my students--I taught seniors government and economics--that their high school years were the "best years of your life." Did they think it was all down hill after age 18?

For the most part, except for an occasional physical twinge I didn't have at 18, everything has been better and better since age 18! Glad to know there are some other golden oldies on the board. froggyintexas

GG-Gma 05-08-2011 11:03 AM

Hi. I recently found that I had joined the Quilting Board in the past and had forgotten (I'm forgetful...sorry), and as I was browsing this time (I've joined again) I saw that I had put "in hiding." And, actually, your response that I'm replying to is quite correct! On the other hand, I was doing that tongue-in-cheek. I am a Texas gal who grew up on the Texas Gulf Coast, moved around the country with my husband until he retired a few yrs ago. My name is Fran and I now live in the Dallas, TX, area with the same guy that I've been with for 56 years. Not in hiding, I'm In Quilting and happy to be. I also have 4 dogs. Love to draw, paint, write verse and was even in Who's Who, twice,
for my clay figurines. Wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma. Retired now. Happy 2-B Quilting, Fran

secret pals??? what secret pals?????? :?: :?: :?: :?:

thepolyparrot 05-08-2011 11:35 AM

I try to be friendly and helpful with everyone - but some of the situations I've been in online over the last 15 years have made me very wary and cautious - and there's nothing wrong with that! :)

Whatever your reasons are for not wanting to disclose your location, they're good ones.

If you don't even want to mention your real name, that's fine too. Everyone has to find the level of caution that suits their own situation and you're not doing anything wrong if you choose to be a bit more reticent about your personal details than others. :)

DMotyl 05-08-2011 11:45 AM

Maybe they just are learning to navigate this site. I thought I had put my state and found out it did not show up...just a thought....

red-warrior 05-08-2011 12:04 PM

When I found the site I wasn't sure what I was signing up for so only put the
minimum. I love the Board and just haven't thought about fixing it!

I feel the same way. I would love to find people close to me. Uhm, maybe that's why they stay in hiding. HA

Well, looks like mine says "in Hiding". I'll have to find where to fix that. From a Texan living in TN!

I wondered that too unless they are running from the law or an ex-husband !!

MaggieMeg 05-08-2011 12:37 PM

Let's see if I've got that corrected now.
