Why are there so many members that have in hiding on their info? I like to see where everybody is from. Am i missing something??????????
they haven't filled out their location info on their profile.
I know it's small and petty of me, but I don't send welcomes to those who are listed "in hiding."
It's probably that many people are hesitant to disclose too much about themselves when they first join, until they get to know the site is really safe, the community of members is solid, and they feel comfortable.
I too love seeing where everyone is from.
I have seen this question before and one reason that was given was some are secret pals and don't want the person they send things to , to know who it is.
it took me a while to discover the "profile" area on the QB. I like to see where people are from, esp.when they are discussing the weather!!
It was explained to me once, that some might be "in hiding" if they have a secret pal swap going on and don't want to spoil their surprise in advance.
Maybe they just didn't fill out the rest of the info when signing up.
Even in hiding we can tell by time of day, weather, climate, snow, skiing, beach, etc. Fun to think about it too. And not just "in HIding", some never put a thing about themselves, nothing, nada. And with Cyber theft and such on here and the possibilites of things that could happen, guess its understandable. Me??? life is what is it, what will be will be, I'm not living in fear.
And I have had members have me send things to secret pals so the post mark is different and throws their secrets off. It is so fun. We are like big kids playing in a large sandbox of life. All is good. Being mysterious is a fun thing too. And then there are those who post all about everything, everywhere on the board. Ahem...me? ♥♥ |
I just wish everyone would put locations in the classifieds, there are things like machines, frames, etc that I'd buy if it were local to me. Other than that, to each her own.
giggles
We love you any way Deb!! |
oops, reading your question I looked at mine and it too said I'm hiding LOL.
I'm not, I think while updating my file some time ago, it sort of fell of LOL. So, I've stopped hiding and am proud to tell I'm completely Dutch ROFL |
I think it unlikely that people just signing up and introducing themselves have secret pals.
Carron's probaby right - they just didn't think to fill location in. |
When I joined, I didn't know there was a spot to say where I was from. My son had to come figure it out for me. :)
I guess I am "in hiding" too. When signing up for anything on the web, I am very hesitant to indicate my location. I know that everyone on this site seems extremely friendly and caring...but that doesn't mean that some stray looney couldn't wander in and seem all friendly too. Maybe you will consider me paranoid, but I don't publicly make my location known. My son, the computer geek, has drilled that into my little pea brain, and I have read and seen enough to know that I wouldn't want 'everyone' on the web to be my friend.
I love to see where everybody's from.
I love it when it says "in hiding" but the board name or first post gives away the location ;)
My husband has drilled it into me not to put my address out there. Maybe when my grand daughter <now age 6> is married to someone who can protect her, I will think about it.
It is definitely not because of secret pals, because I have sent packages to a postmaster before and asked them to forward to secret pals<works great!> But to give you a hint - Hey y'all, how y'all doing today? I am going over yonder to my sewing patch and sit awhile<VBG> |
??? I enjoy seeing where everyone is from as well.
It's helpful to know at least which state a member is in when she's having trouble with her machine or a project. If a member is local to me, I'm happy to offer assistance. That said, it's never a good idea to invite a perfect stranger to your home ( or to go there!).
I met a board member one day for coffee. Now we go to lunch every month and she's in one of my quilt classes. |
I like to see where others are from also. I am just too much in the know. LOL

Ditto. |
I also like to know where some people are from. They could be a potential quilting buddy.
Some one steal my identity, PLEASE. They can pay my balances down, beef up my bank account, and take those annoying telemarketer calls. I'm hiding in plain sight.
You can send the person a private message, just click on their name and when the new screen comes up, click on private message and send your question to them. The answer comes as a private message to you. hope that helps.
I know that when I joined the board, I was in hiding, and couldn't figure out how to get my state in place, till this subject came up. Then I went back to my profile [I thought that I had filled in everything] and finished filling things in. So, "in hiding" can be for many reasons. I love to know where everyone is from, but know that I have to respect their privacy, if that is what they want.
Happy Mom's day to everyong, sure do miss mine. |
I'm in hiding because of security. I never put personal info out about myself on the web. I don't have a facebook account, either (and I'm the generation who usually loves facebook.) It might be fun to know where people are from, but it's also a detail that the random psycho or theif could use to his or her advantage. I'm careful to keep those details out of my posts as well. I've seen people use their entire addresses in their signature lines on here. That's really not a good idea!
I'm one of those that likes to know where people are from I think this is a fun site and interesting to see that we have quilting friends from all over the world
I found this board by googling hexagon images. If I could do that, then it is not just the wonderful people on this board that would be able to see my posts, but anyone who can operate Google. I am very protective since a pervert showed up at one of my niece's friend's house because he back traced her email address. I like seeing where everyone is from too and hope that those who feel safe posting their locations will understand when some of us can't.

 |
I, too, want a degree of anonymity when online. I don't post my last name, or my address, but there are plenty out there who do which scares me for them. I don't feel like anyone knowing that I live in NC is dangerous to me. Personally, I'm more concerned when I'm standing in a checkout line and the clerk asks me for my phone number to key into the register so I get "points" for my purchase in a store rewards program! Or handing a check over to a stranger for a purchase thereby handing them my name, address, phone number and other identifying information. Or buying online with a credit card. I've met a lot of wonderful people online that I consider dear friends. My life would not be the same without them.
I reveal my state in discussions from time to time, but not in my profile simply because everything here is searchable and available to anyone with internet access...doesn't matter if they are a member or not. My sense of security, however unrealistic it may be, far outweighs your curiosity.
I agree - it's fun to see where people are from. It's not like I am giving away my social security number.
The people on this board are great and I appreciate everyone! |
By being "in hiding" may prevent you from receiving retreat announcements for your area on this Board. i.e. the NW Oregon and SW Washington group are in the stages of planning a spring quilt retreat at the beach. If we don't know you are from this general area we can't ask you to join in the fun.
What about the folks that post something other than their picture? That is odd too. Insecure?

I'm not sure how many people know this but these new cell phones are a bigger tracking device than this site they can track a young girl or anyone else right to their bedroom very scary

When I first joined many years ago, I don't think there was a place to put where I was fron. I would be glad to add it now, but don't know how to do it. I am 75 can use the computer, can also send text messages, have a cell phone, use GPS syster, have an embrodiery machine so at my age I do well, but don't know how to get my city and state onto the Quilting Board. personally I am rather proud of myself. I also worked full time until age 72. So if I have offened you or anyone else on the board by not listing my address I am so sorry. I am fron Prichard, West Virginia and proud of it.
