I live in the country so when I wanted some Template material the search was on! My neighbor picked some up for me in town....it was very sweet of her, but I was a little taken back at the price! So I got a little creative next time. I was in a dollar store and found a package of those clear or semi transparent cutting mats to try. They work like a charm...marked with sharpie type marker and cut very nicely with kitchen shears! No more expensive template plastic for me! I go to the glass store and have them laser cut plexiglass for my templates. They usually charge $2

I believe the original question was what can be used for the Karen Kay Buckley method of applique....I also use her method which requires the template to be heat resistant in order to press the fabric around this template after wetting it with Magic Sizing . Having said this which of the wonderful ideas given would be heat resistant so that it won't melt when a hot iron is applied?

Plexiglass works great. I give my husband the template cut out from paper and he takes it to his shop, cuts it out of thinner plexiglass and then glues a fine grade of sandpaper on the back. Works great.

I also use the acid free sheet protectors for my graphs when cross stitching - the top has a sticky edge so everything is protected in the pouch

I was planning on asking about template sources when you brought it up. I read awhile back on this site that someone used lucite and she bought it at Home Depot or Lowes. So if that is possible, then what would I cut it with? I have a new Dremel tool but may need to get a jig saw instead. Sure hope someone knows how to do this.
