Hobby Lobby fabric

New hobby lobby is opening in yuma az around october 09, was wondering if their fabric is worth buying. Have never been to their stores , hoping I can get some opinions from you folks.

JackieMN 09-02-2015 06:15 AM

Their fabric has always been of good quality that I have bought. They run a lot of 30% off weekly sales on the cottons.

lfletcher 09-02-2015 06:17 AM

I have bought from Hobby Lobby in the past. It's not my first stop usually, but if I'm looking for something particular, I have been able to find it there on occasion. There is a range in the quality of their fabric, much like a Hancock's Fabric or JoAnn's in my opinion.

jrhboxers 09-02-2015 06:20 AM

Their name fabrics are a really good quality, in my opinion. I love the drape and feel of it. I would compare it in quality with Connecting Threads fabric. IMHO, great fabric at a great price. I have used it in many, many projects and have always been extremely pleased.

JANNY 09-02-2015 06:24 AM

I buy in Hobby Lobby sometimes since it is near my home. Haven't had any problems with their fabrics. Seems like they always have the 30% off discount running. They also have a weekly discount coupon in my newspaper for a 40% off any regular priced item, so I always use that when I go there, even if I just buy a package of needles.

luvstoquilt301 09-02-2015 06:26 AM

I LOVE how neat and clean their store is. There are some name brand quilting cottons sold there. I am mainly a charity quilter and they have some wonderful fabric at great prices.

NJ Quilter 09-02-2015 06:31 AM

I have not bought from them but have wandered the store and fondled the fabric. Definitely worth the stop IMO.

quilter1 09-02-2015 06:33 AM

I have been happy with my purchases there. Some of the fabric is name brand while some is less than the best quality, just watch what you buy. The coupons are great, I have purchased 2 full bolts of Kona cotton with the 40% off. I do like the atmosphere there- quiet, tidy and pleasant staff.

sewbizgirl 09-02-2015 06:35 AM

Their fabrics are very good quality. My only complaint is that they don't rotate them... they always have the same fabrics! But it will take you a while to get sick of them, if you are new to the store.

Elaine433 09-02-2015 06:40 AM

I have one close by and have bought lots of fabrics from them. You will find fabrics from Kaufmann, Michael Miller and other high names and will also find what I would consider their own brands. I have never had any problems with their fabrics. I have had problems with fabrics from JoAnns and Connecting Threads.
Besides the fabrics they have lots of other great items. Sign up for their emails and get their weekly coupon.

marciacp 09-02-2015 06:53 AM

I have shopped at Hobby Lobby for many years and a lot of their fabric is quilt shop quality, meaning they carry from fabric manufacturer's that sell to quilt shops. Then, they carry their brand of quilt fabric, which is as good as any I have bought. Some of their less expensive fabric is comparable to JoAnn's or Hancock's. Many of my quilts contain Hobby Lobby fabric and I have always been pleased.

I'm happy with my fabric purchases from them. They have misc. quality, so I choose carefully. I enjoy the discounted prices too! They also have some Kona solids too. :)

I buy a lot of Hobby Lobby fabrics and have always had the best of luck with them. I have made some beautiful quilts and clothing from them and they ware very well. I make dresses for my DGD from them and they go through many washing's and are still beautiful.

Barb in Louisiana 09-02-2015 08:26 AM

Their fabric isn't a poor quality, but some of it is harsh feeling kind of like the dye has been painted on. If it's not fairly pliable and soft to begin with, it hasn't gotten any better after I washed it. Having said that, at a price of somewhere around 5 to 9 dollars, I buy fabric there all the time and no one has complained about the quilts I make with the fabric. I really like batiks and wish they carried more of them.

I don't mix actual quilt shop quality fabric with the Hobby Lobby fabric in a quilt. That is when you can begin to tell the difference with some of their fabrics.

OCquilter 09-02-2015 09:11 AM

Just an FYI, they will let use use the 40% coupon on the reg price of the always 30% off fabric. Joanns used to do this but hasn't for a very long time, maybe even since they were called Cloth World, LOL.

Pat G 09-02-2015 09:18 AM

I only have access to one Hobby Lobby & only part of the yr. when I'm in Lake Havasu City, Ariz. I love their fabrics & have favorites I stock up on since I use them neutrals & backings a lot. I find them to be very good quality.

My HL won't do this

Their selection is not huge, but I have never had any problems with the fabrics I bought there. I do agree with Barb that most of their fabric seems slightly lesser quality than what I get at the LQS, but the price is half of the LQS too!

hoprigmom 09-02-2015 10:01 AM

There is new Hobby Lobby close to me. I got some flannel there to make baby blankets for donation to church charity. I washed them before sewing the blankets. The flannel seemed to be the same weight and feel as the flannel that I paid $2.50 more a yard at LQS. In fact, one of the flannels I bought at the LQS seemed thinner. I looked at the bolts at Hobby Lobby and there were some names I recognized. I go by the hand--the feel and weight. You need to "pet" the fabric and hold it up to the light to see the actual weave.

Bree123 09-02-2015 10:16 AM

I've found that HL fabrics are slightly better than JAF. That said, they're definitely not the same quality as LQS fabric. I would always get excited when I would see nice brands like RK or RJR at a big box until I read somewhere that usually the designer fabrics that end up at the big box stores end up there because they were wound wrong or there was a small deviation in the dye lot or such. I have indeed found that the ones I've looked at/bought require as much as 4" cut off due to being wound wrong. I usually only lose 1-2" when I buy it at the LQS.

That said, I have no problem making charity quilts or small projects for family/friends out of their fabrics. They're not heirloom quality, so I would never buy them if I planned to put a lot of work into a quilt (needle turn applique, intricate quilting, sending out to LA) but they have their purpose. :)

Also, HL has their 40% off coupons available on their website, so if you ever forget to bring a coupon, you can download it right to your smart phone & they accept it.

I, too, am a charity quilter and I love to browse Hobby Lobby's selection of fabrics. I have never been disappointed in any of my fabrics. I have recently begun to crochet and they have a really nice selection of crochet yard, thread, hooks and books. I just love that store.

annievee 09-02-2015 10:52 AM

nice and clean stores, have bought their fabric for years !

I bought some Hobby Lobby fabric a few months ago. I bought some of what I call blenders, (some name like Classic Creations, I think). The solids were very stiff and I would pass on that again. Their prints seem to be better though.

alikigirl 09-02-2015 11:09 AM

I love their fabrics. If you have a smart phone, you can download their app and always have a 40% off coupon with you. They do have a lot of fabric always at 30% off, but if you want to use the 40% off coupon, tell the girl when she is cutting it, and she will write it up at full price, then you show your coupon at check-out.

At my Hobby Lobby, the clerk always asks if I have the 40% off coupon ... and when I do, she writes down the real price and then the coupon is used for that one fabric. It is only good for one piece of fabric. (Do I ever buy just one piece, no....but I use the coupon for the largest amount I am buying.)

Quilty-Louise 09-02-2015 11:45 AM

Go there ALL the time. Love their fabrics, and the prices are great too!

gillyo 09-02-2015 12:58 PM

Hobby Lobby is the only fabric store near us so I shop there all of the time. I've found some beautiful brand name fabrics and they also have a lot of great holiday fabrics, (their Halloween line is particularly cute this year). I don't have a smart phone so I print off a few coupons every week to keep in my purse, just in case!

I worked in fabric stores for years so I know what to look for. Fabric that seems thin, too shiny, or has bad color registration, (the print is off), are ones I never purchase. I have passed by some fabrics at Hobby Lobby because the weave was too loose and you could easily see through it. Also, a lot of their cottons are brushed so they're a little stiff for quilting.

My main complaint is that they don't add new fabrics often enough! But deals like .99 patterns and notions at 50% off make up for that. All in all, if you have a Hobby Lobby coming to town I think you'll be pleased. Their regular prices are a little high in the rest of the store, but the 40% off coupons make it worthwhile to shop there for all kinds of stuff.

Kassaundra 09-02-2015 02:32 PM

I have a hard time going into Hobby Lobby b/c of my asthma, the scents are a big trigger for me. But I do like their fabric and occasionally risk it to check out their fabrics. All the fabric I have bought there has been good quality and good price.

khquilter 09-02-2015 03:40 PM

Shop there all the time and never had any problem with
the fabric. After going to Joann"s today I would highly
recommend HL over Joann's. Seems like there quality
is getting worse. Their premium fabric line was terrible.

jbj137 09-02-2015 04:39 PM

***
*** I like their fabric.
***
*** If you have 40% coupons and they run the fabric at 30% off
*** tell them to write up at full price and you can use the coupon and save the extra 10%.
***
*** You would not have been able to use the coupon if the product was on sale.

I haven't bought fabric there yet, but have bought several other things - canisters, letters, knick knacks... I'm keeping my eyes open and might get some.

huskyquilter 09-03-2015 02:18 AM

I have purchased fabric there in the past, but will never shop there again.

Yes this!
A Hobby Lobby just opened almost next door to me. Last night I bought three different fabrics. The lady cutting it explained how to get the 40% off on fabric that is marked 30% off. She writes it on the none sales section of the recipe. So instead of 30% off one item can be 40% off. I used my phone to show the coupon. I really like the fabric and atmosphere and will definitely be back.

sandy l 09-03-2015 03:19 AM

I use to work at Hobby Lobby, in the fabric dept., so got the employee discount on my "stuff". Worked there for almost 4 yrs, and I don't think I ever came home with a full paycheck:)

ManiacQuilter2 09-03-2015 03:27 AM

I don't get there as often as I would like to. I think their quality of fabric is a step above JAF. You can use a 40% coupon on fabric even if it is on sale at 30% off. Just be sure to tell the person who is cutting your fabric. Take a peek at their website since they sell most of the fabric online in the store too. They have a nice selection of RK Kona cotton that are first quality.

katydidkg 09-03-2015 03:43 AM

Hobby Lobby fabric seems to be ok. I've found that they only honor Hobby Lobby coupons, not Joann Fabrics etc.. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yooper32 09-03-2015 04:22 AM

Over the years, I have bought considerable fabric from Hobby Lobby and never had a problem with any of it. Some of their fabric is definitely better than others, but overall, all good fabric. Mind you, it is NOT Moda, but it is good fabric and priced so much less.

Fabric is nice but very limited selection and they rarely have new line so what you see is probably the same fabric for years

betty32084 09-03-2015 04:40 AM

absolutely love our Hobby Lobby fabrics- + you can print out the 40 % off coupons daily.;(from their website) Most of their fabrics are 30 % off- ask the clerk to just write up the regular price ,not sale price and it will give you another 10 % off @ check out. the more the savings on a limited income -the better it is !

betty32084 09-03-2015 04:44 AM

our Hobby Lobby here in St .Augustine sells some Moda fabrics and Kauffman ,too. Love their holiday fabrics selection .
