Holiday Gift Ideas

When you think you have made everything for everyone...
any new ideas? Potholders, place mats, runners, pillows, tote bags,
shoe bags, sets of napkins, ornaments...

Garden Gnome 10-27-2018 04:11 PM

I don't have any ideas for you except pillow cases and aprons, but I'll be watching to see what others come up with.

JustAbitCrazy 10-27-2018 05:10 PM

I just bought two patterns which might be nice made up as gifts: Kitty Cups (a pincushion and tool holder made from a coffee mug and fabric), and Pass the Hot Dish (a potholder fitted to a 9" x 13" or 9"x 9" square pan so it can be safely passed at the table). Both were on sale at Nancy's Notions.

I'm making grocery totes out of the bags that sunflower, dog food and chicken feed comes in.

Sleepy Hollow 10-27-2018 06:40 PM

I have received a little pouch that just fits a circular piece of plastic canvas. It's for carrying earrings when traveling, but, since I don't change mine out often, I just use it for my earrings at home so they don't get lost.

I've made little coin purses.

If you know people who cook with cast iron, skillet handle hot pads are really handy.

I've also received a coaster.

If you knit, one of my favorite gifts to receive are my mom's knitted socks. Now that I've learned to make them, I know just how much time goes into them!! (I timed myself on one sock. 16 hours, 45 minutes. I kept making little mistakes I had to fix on the second sock in the pair, so that one took even longer. Right now, I'm looking at around 34+ hour/pair of socks, plus cost of yarn, so for me to give a pair as a gift, I need to really like that person, lol.)

There is just one problem with this, I can't choose which ones to do first:)

Butterfli19 10-28-2018 04:21 AM

Sachets, small personalized stockings, small "happy home/love/blessings" wall hanging.

Bobbinalong 10-28-2018 04:46 AM

A tissue box cover?

http://www.pinflair.co.uk/new-boutiq...eyword=boutiqu

I bought this kit at the Festival of Quilts this year and plan to make a few for gifts. The lid lifts to put the box in rather than being just a cover over the box (like the ones that come up in Pinterest). If you made it with a solid lid, it would make a useful container. Perhaps make a matching pair for a dressing table?

I tried to make one of the totes from a dog food bag. My machine would not sew it. Any suggestions?

Have you made the Pass the Hot Dish yet? Did you use the Bozal..or do you think you could you use Warm and Natural instead? They look really insteresting and useful.

midge1608 10-28-2018 05:37 AM

I drew a Christmas tree (triangle) with trunk on a piece of paper 8 1/3 x 11 and plan to make several with batting and backing for small gifts to my many friends at my Retirement Center. You could add yarn or such to the point where a star would be. Then every one will have their own Christmas Tree..
Had thought of making several bookmarks and let my new friends pick out the one they would enjoy since so many
of us here read. Hope this helps some.

If I get one more mug rug...... LOL My DD did ask me for a very large shallow fabric bowl for her table to hold napkins and a big flat round fabric mat to match. She saw them at a craft show and they were $150 a set. I made those in a weekend. I think smaller sets would be a great gift, fill the bowl with items like coffee, tea, cookies, hobby items.

Not made yet, just came in the mail the other day. Yes, I will use the Bosal because it came with the kit. I don't know about using the W & N. Maybe someone else will know.

I'll get her to take a picture and send it to me. I used poly clothesline rope bought at Walmart, cut strips of fabric and put the rope in the middle and sewed it like cording. I trimmed off excess seam allowance. No way I'd spend time wrapping fabric around rope. Then sewed the rope into a mat and a bowl. Take extra detail in the joining of the fabric ends and that's all the fussing you have to do.

Wow this set sounds wonderful! Can you show us a picture?

Jordan 10-28-2018 05:32 PM

I would suggest casserole carriers. I have seen some tutorials on the internet and they look fairly easy. i will be watching this forum to see what everyone gives as ideas.

RedGarnet222 10-28-2018 05:41 PM

Hats and purses are a fun and something very personal if you think about the lady or man who is to receive it. Look at the vogue patterns. They are wonderful. It isn't such a jump from a quilt to sewing a regular pattern of anything. Dresses, jackets, anything really.

I'm thinking of doing door stops.... This one caught my eye..

How about a smart phone pillow?

I made a pillow to hold my tablet last year. Easy and fun. I"m going to make some cell phone holders for gifts this year.

Yup. Sounds about right. It takes me 30 hours to 'whip up' a pair of socks in fingering sock yarn.

Maybe it was the size of the needle I use a 18. If the plastic is slipping try tissue paper under the plastic as you are sewing. Instead of pins I use masking tape to hold. If you have any more questions please let me know.

I'm making my daughter a set of pretty pillowcases for Christmas. Last year I made her a great little portable toiletries carrier that can unfold and hang in a hotel bathroom. It was a "ByAnnie" pattern and worth every penny.

I like the cat doorstop! That's a great idea.

I've made casserole carriers before too.

for the group of ladies that get together once a month, I am making simple journal covers that cover a composition book. Got the composition books at the back to school sale at Staples for .50 cents. To make special, I am embroidering their first name on the front, lower right corner, adding a ribbon page marker, and a pen. Uses up stash and I can further personalize by using fabrics in their favorite color or special theme.
We are of the age that we still actually write things down on paper with pen or pencil......lol
A couple of special grade school kids will get one too......

kittiebug 10-29-2018 03:38 AM

pillowcases , zipper bags small and large . good luck

SusieQOH 10-29-2018 05:27 AM

I love that toiletries container!!! I'm going to look for the pattern. My sister and I would have a lot of use for them.
SBG- yours is fantastic.

I make hanging dishtowels for friends and family. The kind you can hang from your stove handles. I use holiday themed towels and add pretty fabric toppers. Everyone loves them. I explain how to make them in this thread over in the General Chit Chat forum. Here is the link to that thread. https://www.quiltingboard.com/genera...s-t300365.html The explanation on how I make them is post number 16 in that thread.

So many good ideas. The grocery bag is a great one. I have a pattern from the Crafty Gemini that cost me $3.00 for an on line tutorial and pattern. You use one yard of decorator cotton (like a canvas) and it makes a great tote bag. They whip up pretty quick, too.

SusieQOH 10-29-2018 05:51 AM

Laura's youtube channel has great ideas. It's called Sew Very Easy. I've made a number of her projects.

janjanq 10-29-2018 06:11 AM

Checkbook covers, tissue holders, wallets, Christmas ornaments, throw pillow covers, fabric baskets, fabric boxes and bowls, candle mats, small appliances covers, placemats, table runners, armchair pockets, photo frames, .....

janjanq 10-29-2018 06:17 AM

Litter bags for the car. I made two with pockets on the outside for cellphone, sunglasses, notebook and pen.

alikigirl 10-29-2018 07:21 AM

I love a travel tray to put on the bedside table to prevent loosing small things. If you have an embroidery machine, you can monogram it.
Here are some tutorials.
this one uses velcro http://nebraskaviews.blogspot.com/20...-tutorial.html
this one uses snaps http://create.eatandwalk.com/2016/04...tray-tutorial/

IrishgalfromNJ 10-29-2018 10:49 AM

I'm going to try making pouches from candy bags. Here's a link to Jenny Doan's video tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=npFmoHTsqa8

Sewbizgirl, I have this pattern but haven't started it. How difficult is it? Yours looks beautiful!

Here is a neat idea! Practical and thoughtful gift, everyone would enjoy receiving it.
