Hollow cube quilt

Has anyone made one of these and have pictures to post? I would rather have no y seams and no paper piecing.

QuiltnNan 09-20-2013 06:48 AM

No, but I like this one too. Thanks

DebraK 09-20-2013 07:51 AM

Not sure if this is what you mean, but here's one I did a few years ago. No y seams or paper piecing.

I was just looking through one of my books yesterday, with no Y seams. Got it from Amazon.com.
http://www.amazon.com/ABC-3-D-Tumbli...umbling+blocks

It has all sorts of tumbling blocks, including the hollow ones. I haven't made one yet but it's on my list.

:D My pleasure! :D

charsuewilson 09-20-2013 08:31 AM

I thought I saw a tutorial on this block on youtube. There were no y-seams. You might look there.

dunster 09-20-2013 10:32 AM

DebraK, I LOVE LOVE LOVE that quilt!

DOTTYMO 09-20-2013 10:56 AM

I have done the same pattern as DebraK . It has no y seams and is made by joining diagonals then joining one long seams top to bottom. The book is excellent and has the pineapple block and other unusual patterns, I purchased to do one specific pattern and have done 4 patterns already.

DebraK 09-20-2013 11:31 AM

Thanks Dunster ;-)

DebraK 09-20-2013 11:38 AM

Geometric Gems by Cathy Wierzbicki, is the name of the book i used. I think she also sells just the pattern and it's called "Inside the Box".

The technique is just like DOTTYMO said, long rows of pieced triangles sewn together.

Look for the one block wonder books. The pattern is very easy.

This quilt looks absolutely amazingly hard! I'm blown away! I have a long ways to go to become an expert quilter!

DebraK I love your floating blocks. Will you share patten name please?

maviskw 09-21-2013 05:20 AM

I saw a hollow cube quilt in Alicia's Attic booth at the Madison Wisconsin quilt expo a few years back. If you take the finished block and cut it from top to bottom, you can see how it is made without y-seams. You take a triangle and put a frame on two sides. That's it.

I tried to put 3 light fabrics in the center of the blocks so that it looks like there is a light on inside the block. By arranging them correctly, you will see the two "walls" and the "floor" inside the block. On the outside pieces, I put darker fabrics, but arrange them so that you can see the light source; usually the top is lightest, and keep the darkest on the same side; left or right.

This may not be the hollow cube, but it's a good tumbling block pattern.

DebraK 09-21-2013 05:40 AM

yep, very easy when you break it down.

DebraK 09-21-2013 05:42 AM

The pattern is called "Think Inside the Box" by Cathy Wierzbicki. Her instructions are very clear. You do not have to be an expert piecer by any means ;-)

petpainter 09-21-2013 05:45 AM

I have the Hollow cube pattern, too...from a quilt show. I've been anxious to do it, so glad to see another pic! I LOVE all the tumbling block patterns and dimensional quilts. Make sure you post a pic when you are done! It seams to me a template came with my pattern(no Y seams).sally

Good grief! Can you order from the US amazon.com (for $26.96) or would there be enough extra charges, to make up the difference?

DebraK 09-21-2013 05:53 AM

I made my quilt with a 60 degree triangle ruler, but you're right, I think she also sells a template with the pattern.

I made a couple of one-block wonders with hollow cubes in them. Now let me see if I can find, and post, the pictures. Ok well I found one of them anyway.

Free pattern for hollow cube
Has anyone made one of these and have pictures to post? I would rather have no y seams and no paper piecing.[/QUOTE

There is a free pattern by Penny Halgren. I googled "free pattern for hollow cube quilt" & found sev. sites but Penny has not only a free pattern but a very good video which made sense of the whole thing.

If you google the same thing I did, look for the site 5 or 6 down which
has the name Penny in it.

JoyceRowell 09-22-2013 03:54 AM

Check out Craftsy Block of the month. The month of July 2013 she shows you how to do tumbling blocks with no Y seams just straight stitching. I love her videos and they are free. Good luck.

Merry7110 09-22-2013 04:32 AM

Nice youtube video that makes it look easy...

I made several of these a few years ago, but haven't yet found a place to put them. I love things like this. I used six fabrics for mine. Three darks for the outside and three different lights for the inside. I put the lightest light on the "floor" and the lightest dark for the top.

Just ordered the Geometric Gems by Cathy Wierzbicke from "half.com" for 9.97 +3.00 shipping!!! That's less than 13.00!! YEAH Half.com usually has the books I'm looking for at a Very Good price...better than amazon.

DebraK 09-22-2013 01:00 PM

That's is a good price, considering that you can pay that amount for just one pattern. I didn't know Half.com was still around. I have lots of books to sell. Thanks for the reminder.

misseva 09-23-2013 09:12 AM

So, I can see how to make the cube but how do you connect them? Am I seeing another triangle to connect?

Here is a block I made for a Boom I was in earlier this year:

from the ABC book from Alicias Attic.

It was fun although I had to add a little extra on the sides to make it 12 1/2".
