Holy FW Batman!
1 Attachment(s)
As I was laying in bed this morning my son came in and said "Mommy, look what Daddy found in the trash"....not thinking anything of it I rolled over and sorta cocked open one eye...just as my son plopped a beautiful little featherweight down next to me! I attempted to attach a picture hopefully it went through and someone may be able to tell me a little bit about it. I'm not sure where to find the serial number or anything
Wow! Did it have the foot pedal and cord with it too? That is a very nice find! Plug it in and see if it works. You can get replacement parts on ebay.
It does have the cord and pedal. Also the case but that is way beyond repair. I'm actually a bit afraid to plug it in since it was sitting outside and was quite frosty when he brought it in. I think I'm going to let it rest for a few days.
Wow! What a way to start the day! Congratulations. I just started using my FW and I absolutely love her. I think you can find the serial number on the bottom. Here is link to help you find when it was made: http://www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_...-database.html.
Thanks I'll look. Im kinda scared to use her. And yes it was a bright start to the day.
Wow, what a great find!!!
Found the serial number and it looks like she is from March of 1936. :-)
Lucky you!
OMG! The decals look in pretty good shape too.
I have one featherweight which I love, but look from time to time for one made in 1936 as that's the year I was born!
Glad they saved this for you!! |
How wonderful! Let's hear it for dumpster diving -- or its equivalent. I agree with you about not starting it in its current condition. At least let it warm up to room temperature so the oil and grease can do their thing. Enjoy!
That little beauty was in the trash? Someone needs 40 lashes with a wet noodle. But it was a good thing for you. Enjoy!
Beautiful. You can get parts at sewingpartsonline.com or sewclassics.com, I think those are right.

LOL, time to crawl out of bed and look at this beauty eye to eye. (j/k)

Wow - you are lucky. Give both guys a hug from us!
Lucky you! I paid through the nose for mine, but it was a birthday present and that was what I wanted. If you're nervous about plugging it in, you can replace the wiring, they have the motor, plug and foot pedal at sewclassics.com. Or you could just try replacing the wires.
WOW! Congrats - you will love her! I have a 1936 also. Let us know how she sews!
Lucky, lucky, lucky you!! Take a meander through the vintage Machine Enthusiasts thread. Somewhere in there will be instructions on how to take it apart and clean it. They're lots of fun to wrk on, and your son might enjoy helping. Enjoy your new baby, you're going to love her. What will you name her?

I'm so happy for you and Ethel. I also have an Ethel, Ethel Jane who was allotted just a few days after I was born in 1945. I bought her from a QB member named Jane and she is my favorite machine. What a wonderful find your hubby made!!!

Great surprise! Don't be afraid to use her. They love to work, but get her checked out by a tech to make sure it's in working order. There are several places online to get parts, just type in "featherweight" and/or "221." There is a featherweight group in the yahoo groups.
OMG!! You must have an angel on your shoulder(or your DH does). Congratulations
Lucky you!!! What husband would bring home a sewing machine. LOL.
Wow! One man's trash is a quilter's treasure! It looks to be in really good condition. I would take it to the "doctor" for a checkup and make sure it is ready to sew. Congratulations!

Great find. My DH once found a limited edition of a Les Paul Guitar in the trash down the street just a few block from our house. He noticed the head sticking out of a trash can and stood my car on STOP. you never know what some one is going to throw away.
I have a 1935, also. Her name is Phoebe. She's the only FW I have with the chrome wheel. The others are all black.
i got my FW the a walking foot and a quilting foot from the link on Vintage Machines and had it tuned up by one of those old sewing machine guys, who informed me that mine was 79 years old and in great shape. I love it for piecing. nice straight regular stitching.
