Hoping for help with setting triangles.....

My block is 16 1/2” square. The 4 patches are 2 1/2” square. I used a chart online and cut the side triangles and corners.....but my “puzzle”is a mess! I originally was going to use a square in a square for the cornerstones. But I need help! I should have paid more attention in geometry class.......
Looking at this picture online now, maybe i just need to remove the little corner triangle and then those pieces will fit together, eliminating the need for a cornerstone? Argh.

It does look like if you removed the little white triangle the side and top border would fit together at a 45 mitered corner. When doing a pieced border, it is sometimes necessary to put a cheater matching white narrow birder between the block and border to get it to work out perfectly.

Love that block!

Or maybe i need to replace the larger triangle with another small triangle-i think that will give me straight ends so I can use a square cornerstone. Hmmmmm.....i will get back to it this evening....

Lol....this is going to take some creative fudging. Maybe I should come up with plan B.....

Wow, that looks beautiful!
I hated Geometry lol

I had that exact situation and added extra fabric on both sides of my pieced border. Worked beautifully.

Plan B looks great and I love your block...

jillmc 10-31-2017 03:17 AM

Peckish-your quilt is gorgeous! Thank you for sharing-I will play around with this a bit more.....

I prefer plan B....such a wonderful block!

It’s a beautiful block and whichever border you choose, will look great. I agree though, the cornerstone adds depth to the block.

Love what you did here, but I can see the challenge of making the corner stone on the other 3 sides in making them fit. I loved geometry in high school and got A's but I can't remember enough to help you here!

Love your color choices and blocks! Especially the black corners.
I am wondering if you could put a thin strip around the star block to make up the difference, either in the white, or one of the colors. OR if you re-stitched inside the border blocks seams, the gold and white blocks, just a thread inside on each block, if that would not "shrink" the strip some. (Not everyone's 1/4" mark is the same when sewing blocks. So, if you make your blocks with an oversized 1/4" seam, the block would come out smaller, so wouldn't it work if you WANTED to shrink it a little? At least, that is my thinking theory.) You only need to shrink it a little. Just a fraction in each block adds up.
Good luck. It is going to look great, whatever you do. You have a wonderful start.

After un-sewing, and resewing lots of the border seams, this may have to do. I will hand appliqué the green cornerstone diamonds, and hope that after the quilting is done, everything will look ok. I made this block as a practice project, and it will be living at my house, either on a wall or on a table, and I now have exactly a 6” square of the background fabric left. I will bind with red....I think! ;). The green borders have not yet been attached-they will finish at 1 1/2”. Time to get ready for Halloween tonight! Thank you for all of your thoughts!

I think the above is the perfect solution. Beautiful block, would really make a beautiful quilt.

momsobon 10-31-2017 05:20 PM

Wow this is just beautiful....You can send it my way

Peckish 10-31-2017 05:23 PM

Love it!

It is beautiful the way you have laid it out.
I took Geometry in HS and could never "get" then hang of it - I was - like a lot of people - thinking what the heck, I'll never use this when I "grow up". Little did I know how much it would help me now. I'm learning more now about Geometry then I ever did in HS. I think practical application helps more than from a book - sometimes.

I love plan B!!! Your quilt is beautiful

Jane Quilter 11-01-2017 06:19 AM

It turned out beautiful................

SusieQOH 11-01-2017 06:35 AM

That looks so gorgeous!! I love seeing this block evolve :)
Back to Geometry- I never understood it at all. My brain totally lacks that skill. It never mattered to me until I started quilting lol I sailed through other courses but Geometry was awful for me. Had to repeat in summer school. I still remember how mad I was to have to do that in the summer!!!

I just love your block, but I know I would have struggled figuring the borders out. Yours is wonderful. I am considering EQ8, is this a project you could use with that?

EQ would probably help-i have a really old version of it, and its on my husband’s laptop, so not always accesible to me. In retrospect, i should have made a few practice blocks of the border-they are set on point, and I couldn’t figure out what the finished dimensions would be. The borders were only half an inch too long, but with the diagonal piecing, i couldn’t get it to work. I did not have enough background fabric left to add strips-which would have been the best solution.

It's beautiful. Great recovery to Plan B.
