Hottest New Quilt pattern??

Okay, here is the problem. I was asked if I was putting anything in the local quilt show in April this year. Usually, I am one step ahead and already started on something unusual or different. I am at a loss this year. I have become so bogged down in work that I haven't had time to really think about what I want to make. So, what is the hottest, new, method or pattern out there right now? Or do you have a favorite that you never get tired of seeing?

BellaBoo 09-16-2013 04:30 AM

I think the big block quilts are becoming popular once again. Made with bold colors and high contrast.

Go browse Missouri Star Quilt tutorials for ideas: https://www.youtube.com/user/MissouriQuiltCo

She's got some really neat ones that I had not seen before. Like the "You Got Mail", "The Merry Go Round" or the "Out of Bounds".

Do you want easy or Challenging. I love Ediya Sitar patterns. Not sure I spelled her first name right. I made her Eldon Quilt and love her patterns.

I like to see all kinds of quilts at shows, from the oldest vintage quilts to the newest fads. I would hate to have to choose between traditional vs. art, or applique vs. pieced, or machine vs. hand sewn, etc. They all have their place. While it's nice to see what's "in vogue", it would be a shame to see only that. I guess my recommendation is to make what you want, whether it's something familiar and comforting or something that expands your abilities. You do beautiful work, and other quilters will be delighted to see it.

Labarynth Walk is on my "to do" list.

WTxRed 09-16-2013 06:41 AM

I have often wondered this too, piecemaker. Not necessarily for show quilts - just for the hottest trends. I'm sure there are probably sites or bloggers who follow or set what the hot trends are. I'd like to find them! I wonder if its like the fashion world, where the big designers 'push' their new ideas? Or is it something spun off of the big quilt shows?

I am just now finishing my first swoon quilt - I'm guessing that is probably a trend that is a couple of years old, fun pattern tho!
Will be interesting to see what pops up here :)

Rose Marie 09-16-2013 06:45 AM

So many of the patterns I see now have a lot of empty space in the design.
Im not that good at FMQ so avoid those designs.

Among several quilt stores near me is one that specializes in modern quilting. Their website shows a number of the new styles that are now popular. The look is clean, bright, cheerful and often pretty easy to make. New quilts often have no borders and put bright, patterned fabrics on a plain white, grey or cream background. You might get some ideas here: http://www.waterwheelhouse.com/

When I get done playing Fairy Godmother, I have two quilts to finish for Christmas. Then I am ging to start Dunster's Diamond Log Cabin. It is going to be a wedding present for my son and his long-term girlfriend. No ring yet or anything, she has to finish Nursing School, but she finishes next summer. So I figured I would get started.

Sorry, I can't be of much help, but I just don't like the modern, watercolour, fabric painting, and stuff quilts. I like the traditional blocks, with a twist. Good luck.

DOTTYMO 09-16-2013 07:41 AM

Okay why is it a swoon quilt? Just looks like big stars to me.

I can't really explain the name of the pattern Dotty. It is easy to fall in love with it tho, while making it, especially the way color plays with it. I didn't use FQ's making mine - I used stash yardage. It's got 9 blocks in the basic top (if you make it according to the pattern) and is 80x80...big blocks, they have a pretty awesome visual impact. And I think more so big than smaller.

I'm hoping someone in my family falls in love with this quilt and wants it - that would be awesome.

greensleeves 09-16-2013 08:50 AM

Modern seems to be the trend right now and as mentioned they are usually easy to piece and quilting is usually kept simple. Have seen beautiful and not so IMO.
An easy to do but looks hard quilt is the Disappearing Nine Patch-Next Generation by Lyn Brown. Discussion and pictures were here on QB a few days ago.

ghostrider 09-16-2013 09:10 AM

I totally agree with dunster. Go with something from your heart, either from a pattern or a design of your own. Doing so is the best way to represent who you are, and usually brings great pleasure to the creative process. :)

amelia0607 09-16-2013 06:04 PM

Since you seem to be swamped at work, your quilting should be something that you enjoy 150% or you won't have fun doing it and you NEED to have fun. So spend a little extra time on the Internet and find something that speaks to you. I know you want to do something that might WOW everyone at the show but I think you can WOW them and have fun at the same time.

Personally, if I had the skills to do anytihng, I would go for modern and bright but that's what I like. I also like to see a nice combination of things.

I have shopped at Water Wheel Quilt store several times. Lovely fabric in an old farmhouse. And I love Grace, the golden retriever. It is a 4 hour drive from Rhode Island so not able to go very often, once or twice a year, the most.

So any quilt you go ohhhhhhhh over can be a swoon quilt.

Quilt idea reverse applique quilt from aus. Or cruso crosses. You can do these in individual blocks and quilt at same time before joining witha border. If you run out of time big empty block with fantastic quilting. Only pics so far of my reverse.

Cindy60545 09-17-2013 03:37 AM

I agree with Dunster. Whatever jumps out at you that you really want to do. But the trend around here is Judy Niemeyer's designs. Particularly Desert Sky & the fancier DWR. They seem to be popping up at all the shows & winning ribbons.

KatsKidinWI 09-17-2013 03:46 AM

I got a book, 1000 different blocks in various sizes, I love it for swapping blocks and making sample quilts because I never get tired of making the same block over and over. I make them all different.

cindi 09-17-2013 03:55 AM

Why not think outside the trends? Create what YOU want - what draws YOU to a pattern. There will be a lot of "trendy" quilts in a quilt show. After a while they all start looking the same. Bring back an old traditional, or a quilt pattern on your "bucket list" that you've always wanted to do, but never had the time to quilt. Start a new trend!

Wonnie 09-17-2013 04:20 AM

I'm working on the center panel for a RR. Used the pattern block, Honey Bee.....old timey block but I used bright colors on a white background instead of 1930's prints and I like how it turned out.

sheilar 09-17-2013 04:39 AM

It seems owl quilts are everywhere, especially for babies!!:)

Tula Pink has a very cute design that is picture in frames hanging from a wall. You need some big prints-------------her sample is big prints of flowers. Looks to be fairly simple. But eye catching

I am thinking of rocking my quilt show with a large canvas sporting McKenna Ryan patterns (several that go together).
No sewing, just major fusing. Just for fun.

WMUTeach 09-17-2013 06:32 AM

I am seeing many, many and often too many variations on the New York Beauty. I am now bored with them. I also am seeing lots of curves. Great skill for the advanced quilter.

gramquilter2 09-17-2013 06:37 AM

Modern quilt patterns seem to be the new thing. I think the quilting on a modern quilt is the big thing.

Tiggersmom 09-17-2013 08:53 AM

Trends come and go........if it is a quilt you are going to keep, I would do something You Love, why waste time on something you are not going to like 10 years down the road, not to mention money on fabric, etc. jmho, Jennifer

OMG!! Thank you, Lynn, I fell heads over heels in love with this site!! (Thank God I live far away from it!) Their photos are crisp and clear and SO colorful! Love the fabrics and their samples are to die for! Just exclamation marks everywhere, so fun!! Can't wait to explore further and order from them.:D

I decided I wanted to put a quilt into a show for the first time ever. I have gone to lots os shows because we travel half year in an RV. I wanted to do something traditional...with a current day look. I wanted something I wasn't seeing at the shows, paper pieced ny beauties, Edyta Sitar appliqué, modern wall hangings in large, bright florals...all beautiful but someone else's preference. I decided to do a Glorified Nine patch in the style of a quilt I had sees on a very old Quilters Newsletter issue. I made up my own design and entered. I would have been pleased with the 3 judge panel's feedback...but I was thrilled to get a ribbon. I think the best inspiration comes from my own review of historical quilts. As the quilters tshirt saying goes, "think outside the quadrilateral parallelogram." lol. Have fun!

At the Lowell Quilt Festival in August, the whole place was alive with applique! Modern and traditional!

DonnaPBradshaw 09-17-2013 12:18 PM

What about a chevron quilt? It's a new pattern and is really cute!

And so many beautifully pieced backs, too! Two quilts in one!!

Look up Anita's Arrowhead quilt block tutorial. It is easy- There is a measurement for an additional size at the end of the tutorial. I made it with two colors for all the blocks - works up fast as the first sewing actually sews half of the block together.

I have no idea about the newest trends, but browse through the quilts on Pinterest. When I do that, I always find some really awesome ideas that I have never seen before!

I watch a local PBS station every Sat morning for tips and ideas. Last Sat there were two episodes on 18 inch blocks and directions as to how to change the them out to make very different looking quilts. This link only lists one episode but if you search I am sure you can find part 2. Very worth the watch if you are looking for a new idea. http://www.iptv.org/series.cfm/45/se..._nancy/ep:2701

I'm currently doing the Aiming 4 Accuracy quilt along with the plan to enter it next Spring. There is nothing real hard about it but it has different size blocks that give an excellent place to play with colors. It is all piecing. The pattern is free until the end of October when the quilt along ends...just download it.

gemmyfrog 09-18-2013 12:40 PM

Have you tried any of Jinny Beyer's? The DeVinci is one I might try.

trolleystation 09-18-2013 04:21 PM

Try the 'Swoon' pattern. Looks like fun. Lot of chances to personalize the block.
