How to back my Dresden Plate
 

I know how to make the Dresden Plate just fine. I need to know how to back it without putting it on a block, so it's just the Dresden Plate. It's going to be a round table topper. Can I use a circle of fusible flannel on the back or can I birth it and still keep the point and dips clean and accurate ? I need a little advise. Thanks

i birthed mine before adding the center circle.

Yes you can birth it....just cut the batting very close to the stitching and clip those inside corners.

I haven't done it but I don't see why you couldn't birth it just fine. If you left the middle circle for later then you could pull it through that hole to birth it. Agree that you should cut the batting close and clip any inside corners or curves to make it lay flat. I would probably lay my bat down first cut larger than my plate, then my backing right side up (wrong side touching the bat) then my plate right side down. Once stitched all the way around I would trim the back and batting away and turn. I would probably also top stitch close to the edge once I got it turned to make the edge more crisp but at this point not sure on that point. Good idea for a table topper.

Yes...what does birthing means?? I've heard it before but forgot what it meant ! Duh.....

birthing- sew the two fabrics facing together leave a space open and turn right side out.Then sew the opening closed

I have never heard that expression before in any way relating to sewing. It's an applique technique and it has a name but I don't think it's birthing. Learn something new every day!
