I buy on sale only. Try to buy only fabrics that will go with anything, like my favorite color in small prints.
Backing fabric and neutrals on sale are the best to stock up on.
Batiks on sale are great for my stash as they all go togather no matter the color.
Charms I always buy at least 3 amd only on sale. Fats always 2.
I only make lap size quilts so yardage is usually only 1 yd.
I have found that quilt shop fabrics are much richer in color than Joanns and they do not match.

If I really like a fabric, and think I will use it in a quilt, I'll buy 3-4 yards. Otherwise, I wind up with bits and pieces that are great for making scrap quilts but not much use for anything else. I love the look of jellyrolls and fat quarters (and have far too many) but they wind up sort of being part of my "permanent fabric collection."

My local thrift store is where I go for some good fabrics at 4 for $1.00. From blouses, skirts are great as you get more material for the 25.cent! I find awesome amounts of velvet and nice low pile animal prints and think of crazy quilts with these. I aquire buttons and zippers this way too. And when I have more money I look for sales at JoAnns, Hobby Lobbys usual 30% off line and rarely get to Hancocks. But I buy what catches my eye whether I need it or not.

I buy mostly by the yard, once in a while, when fat quarters are on sale, I will buy them. It is cheaper to buy the yard and make your own fat quarters and exchange with friends.

I always buy yardage. I can cut my own charms, strips, layer cakes, whatever much cheaper that way.

I buy on sale usually, unless I see something I can't live without.

I buy by the yard. After using fabric, I make fat quarters, jelly roll strips, and lastly charm squares with the left over scraps.

I usually do 1/4 or 1/3 yard cuts and 3 yards if I might use it for a border.

But, if your into applique, FQ's would work. If your into small/baby quilts or lap quilts, then you might want only 1-2 yds. If your into bigger quilts 3+yds might be what to buy.

Then there is the like, love, & OMG must have feelings you get with certain fabrics. That sometimes helps me to decide how much to purchase.

And another thing to take into consideration, do you have room for stash? If space is limited then only purchase what you have room for. IMHO to purchase and hide the fabric in tubs (never to be seen again), then you forget what you have. :? :-(

I buy what I like and what I think I will use someday. I thought my stash was coming along quite nicely (almost 2 plastic bins full) until I see some of ya'lls pictures. Then my jaw hits the floor and I tell hubby I need to so shopping for more fabric.HEEHEE. I'd be really green with envy if it weren't a sin. I can't ever imagine having that much fabric. Lucky ducks!
