How can I make this more "Christmasy"?

I made Darlene Zimmerman's Stars All Around tree skirt. Here is a link to the free pattern: http://www.simplicity.com/t-free-qui...ree-Skirt.aspx
Just the top is done so far and I haven't taken a picture, but it is exactly like the pattern. I used Bella Solid Christmas Tree red and a Kona white. I really like it. Problem is, everyone I show it to says it doesn't look like Christmas. Any ideas how I can make it more Christmas-like? Some kind of simple embellishments? What do you all think? Thanks!

sandrab64 11-06-2013 11:44 AM

How about applique in the white space (stocking, snowman, holly, etc)?

Prism99 11-06-2013 11:49 AM

I agree with applique in the white spaces. Also consider using a good quality gold metallic thread for quilting.

p.s. I have to agree with QuiltE in that it already looks Christmas to me, plus the tree and presents will enhance that feeling.

QuiltE 11-06-2013 11:55 AM

Since when is red and white not Christmas-y?
Think ... Candy Canes ... and Santa's Suit?! :D

By itself, yes, it may not look Christmas in some people's eyes
... put it under the tree with presents
... no doubt about it, it's Christmas-y!!

Keep in mind it is YOURS ... and you already said that YOU like it ... that's ALL that matters!!! :)

Finish it off and enjoy it!

MaryMo 11-06-2013 11:59 AM

I concur with QuiltE .... it is the perfect complement to a decorated tree and such. I really think it stands out because of its simplicity. I look forward to seeing the finished top.

quilt1950 11-06-2013 12:14 PM

I agree, that in context, under a decorated tree, it will look like Christmas. I love it just the way it is.

Tartan 11-06-2013 12:15 PM

It looks classy and Christmasy to me. You could appliqué a couple of crossed red and white candy canes in the white but I don't think it needs anything in my opinion.

Jackie Spencer 11-06-2013 12:28 PM

You can't get more Christmasy than red and white! I like it just the way it is. Beautiful!!

PaperPrincess 11-06-2013 12:50 PM

You can always bind it in a predominately green Christmas print. If it's a tree skirt, what other holiday would it possibly be for (unless you leave your tree up until Valentine's day!) ;)

quiltstringz 11-06-2013 01:10 PM

I agree - once the tree is added it will be christmas, although when you get presents added you probably won't even see it. It is a really cute pattern, thanks for sharing it with us.

QuiltnNan 11-06-2013 01:32 PM

i love it the way it is... but the suggestion of gold quilting thread would be nice

jcrow 11-06-2013 01:53 PM

I think it is Christmassy just like it is. I wouldn't add anything else to it. It would make it too busy. It's very lovely.

peaceandjoy 11-06-2013 01:54 PM

Do YOU think it looks Christmassy? After all, it's your tree skirt!

If it doesn't now, won't it when it's under a Christmas tree?? I sure think it does - and will...

That said - if you haven't bound it yet, maybe look for a fabric that has red and green in it?

wishfulthinking 11-06-2013 03:15 PM

Thanks everyone! I thought of some sort of applique and other embellishments, but considering my skill level and all the other things I have going on right now it would just be a recipe for disaster, or another UFO. I'm glad y'all agree that it's Christmasy enough. Now, I had been thinking of red thread for the quilting. What do you think of that? Think I'll take it to the store and check out gold & green & see which is best. Y'all's opinions on that are appreciated also.

Treasureit 11-06-2013 03:21 PM

If you are from Scandinavia you are already very Christmasy...that is what their colors/patterns are along with hearts.

ube quilting 11-06-2013 03:39 PM

All t needs is a tree and presents. Wha-la ,Christmas!

It looks like a nice tree cover, imho.
peace

Try a green quilting thread and use snowflake or Christmas tree motifs for the designs. :)

I made three of these, one I used Winnie the Pooh in Winter and a white fabric that had silver sparkles in it that made it look like tinsel or snow glimmering in sunshine. I used Santa fabric and a Green branch fabric with the other two. You can also think about reversing the white spaces, make those a Christmas fabric and the other a white on white fabric.

nativetexan 11-06-2013 05:08 PM

holly leaves maybe. but it doesn't have to "look" like Christmas, just be used then.

quilter2theend 11-06-2013 05:09 PM

Second post, in the white spaces on mine, I did snowflakes in blue to match the Pooh fabric and on the white spaces of the Santa themed skirt I drew in Old World Santa's, and the Green one different snowmen.

Quilting Grandma 11-06-2013 05:14 PM

I made this for my DGD as a wedding gift . I used red + white and she loved it. It isso pretty and very Christmas.

sewingsuz 11-06-2013 05:19 PM

I think is is beautiful. You could use this after christmas as a round table cloth also. If the opening is velcroed shut. Any way I like it just the way it is.

snodgrasssue 11-06-2013 05:31 PM

What about green binding.

debbiemarie 11-06-2013 08:32 PM

It needs some bright green!

Jim 11-06-2013 09:42 PM

It's beautiful...put it under the tree.. Viola.... Christmasy

DOTTYMO 11-06-2013 11:05 PM

I would use a green Christmas fabric as well as red Christmas fabric and quilt Christmas pictures based on age to use.

agree wholeheartedly.

I love it. Thanks for the link. It would also make a great table topper.

twinkie 11-08-2013 05:07 AM

Don't know if this has been mentioned or not, but I would use a green material with a holly print in the center circle, the triangles around the center square and then in the four triangles on the outside edge and then bind it in the same material. Just my thoughts.

madamekelly 11-08-2013 07:37 AM

How about one more border in a red, white, and green print? Just my quick thought.

MargeD 11-08-2013 07:39 AM

You might applique some holly and berries in the white spaces, or other Christmas items, however, it is absolutely beautiful as it is. What better colors for Christmas than red and white? Besides, once the presents are under the tree you won't see the tree skirt. I think it's an absolutely terrific tree skirt pattern and it's on my "Roundtoit" List.

Carol Wilson 11-08-2013 11:15 AM

Sew on some gold christmas bells.

wishfulthinking 11-08-2013 03:58 PM

What a bunch of great ideas. Thanks so much! I particularly like the idea of quilting snowflake and star designs....have to go looking for some of those. I may back it with a Christmas fabric of some sort and it'll be reversible. The pattern is easy and quick to piece. Wish I'd done this in time for our church's Lottie Moon fundraising auction and sale. Maybe next year.

I totally agree.

sewready 11-08-2013 05:09 PM

Adorable pattern and it TOTALLY says, "christmas"

solstice3 11-08-2013 06:09 PM

It looks fine like that but add whatever makes you happy

ctrysass2012 11-08-2013 06:25 PM

Great pattern!! I think it will be very classy as is. I am in need of a new skirt. Thanks for posting the pattern.

Teacup 11-08-2013 08:29 PM

I love this in simple red and white. I've had this pattern in mind all year. I have to make a new tree skirt. I threw my old one out last year, it was felt and was in bad shape after years of cats lying on it and biting off decorations (Santa's button eyes were gone, the ribbons on the packages were bedraggled). Glad you said this was simple to do. I'll probably use plaids or Christmas prints.

It's red and white and has stars. IMO, it would look great under a tree. The tree's going to have plenty "Christmasy" stuff. Let it be. Very nice design!

And here I thought all this time that all trees stay up until Valentine's day. tee hee. Isn't red and white for "heart" day, too? And if it's got a lot of green, it can stay until March 17.
