I have been sewing since 7th grade and just started making quilts about 10 years ago. I'm almost 65. I was looking for a new hobby and prayed about it. The Lord led me to quilting. I was browsing on the internet one day and saw an ad for freequilting.com. When I went there, the Lord led me to this pattern that seemed pretty easy. So I tried it and was hooked. It took me almost a year to finish and I hand quilted it. It was the one and only quilt that I hand quilted. I've machine quilted ever since. Hand quilting is just too slow. I have so many quilts in my head that I can't take a year to finsh each of them.

i did it on my own at first but after awhile did go find a couple classes to learn different techniques and i would go to sewing groups and stores and ask lots of questions...and the (4) 8 foot tall book cases full of books certainly had a bit to do with it :thumbup:

My first experience was an applique block for a church which I did by hand and without instruction. I have a 92 year old friend (bless her) who verbally told me to cut pieces a certain size. I did this in flannel for a baby quilt gift. She also told me how to make strip blocks (on the diagonal) with dark on one side and light on the other. This is a full size. She also tells me how to miter corners and finish a quilt. She had a quilting business with her daughter many years ago. This site is also helping me. I have been bitten by the quilting bug. The problem is, I spend too much time on the quilting board.

I decided to make a quilt one day. Bought fabric and a starter kit of quilt supplies and tools. I looked online a lot, then went to it. My first quilt was a 4patch with 5" squares. I had no idea what I was doing, but I was pretty happy with the results.

Mostly self taught...through the Embroider's Guild I belonged to over 30 years ago I had one lesson...that hooked me and everything else I learned on my own.

LOL...yep 20 some years ago the same thing happen to me. I started by making simple sandwich quilts from scraps for my kids who were little toddlers & could careless what the end result was. I for some reason didn't do any sewing for several years then I started watching Simply Quilts and said "oh I can do that " lol... I am pretty much self taught, have never taken any classes. My problem w/ quilting I am very impatient so I am still at the basic skill level. I am addicted to fabric, there fore I quilt.

I would suggest start with something very simple to gain confidence .

I have read, read and read books, tutorials online AND THE MOST IMPORTANT IS THIS QB!!!! I have learned so much here! When I started out I knew practically nothing although I had experience in making outfits for my grown girls when they were little and cross stitch.
QB is FABULOUS! They recommend so many things and give advice which is always excellent when you ask.

Bought my first Quilters Newsletter back in 1975 (still have it) Back then everything was done by hand, using templates. Thats what got me started and have been quilting ever since. Self taught. Quilting has come a long way since then!!
