My daughters and I have always sewn - in fact I taught my oldest to sew because she was so finnicky (sp?) when we went shopping for clothes. "I like the design of this one, but I don't like the color...The color is ok, but it doesn't fit like I want it to." That was when she was only 5 years old. Had to teach her how to make her own clothes to preserve MY sanity! Anyway - one Christmas I decided we needed some Mother/Daughter bonding time. Went to our LQS and signed us up for a class. I wrapped up a cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler and a coupon for the fabric of their choice. The class was over 4 Saturdays and meant lunch together and a day together at home to do the finish work (basting, quilting and binding). After the class we all became addicts.

I am self-taught. I bought myself a new basic sewing machine, a sewing kit (back when it had tools already in it!), ordered a couple of pre-cut quilt kits, and got the book Quilt in a Day-Log Cabin by Eleanor Burns.
The rest is history!!

I found a pattern I liked (hexagonal wreath) and started cutting up the scraps of material that I had from making mine and my dd dresses and dh shirts... have yet to complete that quilt...

One day I was looking thru the magazines, and a quilt spoke to me. It was a Christmas wall quilt, paper pieced, I still have it and put it out every Christmas, has to be 15 years old at least.

I already sewed a great deal, but I took a six week beginning quilting class and got all the basics. Since then it has been all on my own. I have learned A LOT from this board and the tutorials that everyone posts. There is so much out there on the internet.

self taught, I watched Sewing with Nancy, then bought a cuddly quilt from Joannes and went from there! Also, reading lots of tips on this board!

I couldn't find a quilt in the colors I wanted, so I bought a book and and fabrics and went to work. It was taking too long (still a UFO in the cupboard), so I made up my own pattern with really large pieces. "My own pattern" turned out to be "rail fence" when I learned more about quilting and the names of blocks. What really got me going strong, though, was when DH bought me a new sewing machine. I've only taken one class (machine quilting, including FM). I've learned the most right here. THANKS!

Totally self taught using books and internet information. Matter of fact---still learning new stuff every day!

I bought a Quilt In a Day Log Cabin book & some fabrics & went from there. I still have the quilt, but I had used straight pins to sandwich it & recently got it sandwiched again with safety pins. It's an oversized queen, so I'm not sure how to finish it on my little Brother machine & can't afford a LA'r. One day...it's real pretty in colonial blues.

Self taught. Read alot of books and then started buying the supplies I needed. I already had 2 older sewing machines.
