oops, tearing it will stretch the edges and might cause a problem.

That's probably how I'd do it. Unless there was a LOT of extra fabric which might make it harder to quilt (trying to shuffle around extra backing) - but if it's not that much bigger, it'd be ten times easier to quilt and then trim.

I do not try to cut large pieces; not worth the trouble and possible Vs. Like Scissor Queen, I tear.

We have torn fabric for 100's of years. You get a straighter piece of fabric that way. If the edge is a little frayed, it's going to be inside a seam and won't show. Just remember "no seam down the center of the backing if you are going to longarm it".

I go for tearing as well. It's not good for smaller things, but for backing? Let her rip!

I learned tonight to sew two pieces together into a tube. Then cut down the center of one piece and you have even distribution on both sides with a wider center piece.
