How do I keep my ruler from slipping when cutting strips. I am holding down the ruler with my left hand and moving it when I cut, but it is still slipping.

ann clare 12-30-2010 09:59 AM

I put sandpaper dots on the 4 corners.

I use either little felt pads or little sandpaper pad that you can buy they are little circles.

MadQuilter 12-30-2010 10:02 AM

There is a roll of blue-ish clear tape (feels like saran wrap) that you can stick to the ruler. It is non-intrusive and you can definitely feel the difference.

Another tip I can give you is DO NOT hold the ruler in the middle. Instead, hold it at the lower third and cut only as far as your hand, then walk your hand up to the next section and cut some more until you have made a complete cut.

I use the grip stuff that goes on the bottom of it..it comes in a roll and is like clear vinyl...you cut it to the size of your ruler or template. I don't know the name of it, but I've used it for about 8 years now and it has never come off my ruler. It's been a lifesaver for me.

quilterken 12-30-2010 10:11 AM

Just get it a little dirty... sometimes just a spray of hairspray is all you need for a little traction.

Or, you can get Invisigrip, sandpaper dots and some people use the clear sticky dots that you put under lamps etc to keep them from sliding.

sewwhat85 12-30-2010 10:23 AM

i use the grip stuff

quiltsRfun 12-30-2010 11:04 AM

I've used sandpaper dots and clear grip dots. I like the sandpaper better as the clear vinyl ones are kind of thick and tend to bunch up the fabric when I'm trying to place the ruler. Thought I'd try the Invisigrip but haven't yet.

amma 12-30-2010 12:05 PM

I use Invisigrip on all of mine, one roll goes a long way :D:D:D

I use this stuff too.

Aside from putting grips on the bottom of the ruler, it's standard to keep half your hand off the ruler. This steadies the ruler because your hand is not likely to slip against the fabric.

snow 12-30-2010 03:57 PM

I use a 6lbs. of canned pototoes to hold my ruler. It works!!

msawicki64 12-31-2010 03:24 AM

Where do you find this grip stuff??? Thanks

jitkaau 12-31-2010 03:57 AM

Go to the quilt shop and get either the non - slip plastic/silicone dots or the sandpaper dots to adhere to the rule.

Tropical 12-31-2010 04:01 AM

I have arthritis and carpal tunnel and holding my ruler and walking my hand up the ruler is difficult. I tried a few methods and have settled on using 20oz full water bottles to hold my ruler. I can easily lift them and place them all in one spot or place them along the ruler. This way I can lift my hand and then replace it and not have my ruler slip.

MerryQuilter 12-31-2010 04:09 AM

Try Quilters Rule rulers they have a non slip bottom have loved using them for years.

Someone once told me to put you thumb against the bottom edge of the ruler and that would prevent it from slipping. It had to be for small cuts to be able to that?

jaciqltznok 12-31-2010 04:46 AM

I use the sandpaper dots as well and have for years. They hold well!

teacherbailey 12-31-2010 05:00 AM

In frustration once, I painted a wide strip of runner cement down the middle of my ruler...and let it dry---took about 2 minutes. Works like a charm!

TexasSunshine 12-31-2010 05:10 AM

Any LQS, Hobby Lobby, Hancocks, or Joanns should have the Invisagrip, sandpaper or clear dots.

caspoohbear 12-31-2010 05:14 AM

I use the sandpaper dots, but they aren't always in the right place, so I think I'm going to get some of that invisigrip stuff!

Renee110 12-31-2010 05:19 AM

I found some ruler grippy dots at Joanne's in the notions section that you stick on your ruler. It works really well. You can't slide your ruler on the fabric to line it up though....it moves the material. You have to pick ruler up completely to re-position it.

reginalovesfabric 12-31-2010 05:43 AM

go to dollar tree and buy a roll of rubbery cabinet drawer liner cut a strip and it works well....

Pickle 12-31-2010 06:17 AM

After reading all these good hints, I will share mine. A friend told me if you put your little finger off of the ruler and on the cutting table it does help to keep it from slipping.I hope you can understand this.

I use sandpaper dots. I put one in each corner and then if its a ruler i put 2 diagonally from each other. But it its a sqaure I put them in each corner and one on each side.

joyce888 12-31-2010 06:23 AM

I use a "O'LIPFA Lip Edge Ruler" that I've had for years. But I did have trouble when cutting multiple layers that the ruler would not stay put on the edge of my cutting mat. To solve this problem I glued a carpenter's pencil (can be found at any home improvement store) on the lip. In case you're not familiar with the pencil - it's flat and does not have an eraser or any metal and can be cut easily to any size.

Holice 12-31-2010 06:28 AM

Invisi-grip. comes in a roll looks like heavy contact paper get it in quilt shops or Joanns or Handcocks.
I use it on all my rulers. Otherwise the little round sand paper dots you put on back. I don't like the clear plastic dots. They are too thick.

msawicki64 12-31-2010 06:28 AM

thanks.

I use Quilters Rule and it almost never slips. I had one for about 15 years, made about 30 large quilts with it. Dropped it many times and it never broke. Decided to buy another one because the markings were getting hard to see (senior citizen.) I ordered one from Overstocks.com and got free shipping. Best price that I could find. None of my LQS stocks it. It is 6.5 X 24". I have several other "non-slip" rulers, but I always use this one. I told my DH the other day that the two quilt tools that I can't live without are my Quilter's Rule and my June Taylor Shape Cut Plus.

AliceQ 12-31-2010 07:24 AM

Many of you have mentioned using the Invisigrip. I tried it and it made no difference at all. My rulers still slipped. What was I doing wrong. I'm considering using some Zots (from my scrapbooking supplies) and tapping my finger on them to take away a lot of the stickiness first.

AliceQ 12-31-2010 07:26 AM

Me again, I do have a Lipfa ruler with the lip at the bottom that grips the edge of my cutting mat. I really like that but it can still slip ocassionally.

ruth lay 12-31-2010 07:30 AM

YES WHERE DO YOU GET THE GRIP STUFF.

stichinluvr 12-31-2010 07:32 AM

I like rubber cement.

Bluehouse 12-31-2010 07:35 AM

I love the little sandpaper dots too. I put 6 on my larger rulers....then I don't have to hold it so tight. And remember to replace those dots now and then.....they wear smooth.

CGail 12-31-2010 07:41 AM

I have the same problem and have the small round felt cabinet type circles on mine. They help, but I think I'm just still awkward with it. I tend to push too hard with the hand that holds the ruler down and cause the ruler to move. - Cynthia

I've found this to be very helpful in cutting accurately, too. I have invisagrip on my rulers, I have at least my little finger off on the left side, and I move my hand up as I cut. I get way less sliding with this.

Quiltbeagle 12-31-2010 08:31 AM

I have to agree with Alice Q, I used the Invisagrip on one of my new rulers and it didn't help at all. It looked to me like the really thin clear plastic you used to be able to get cut from a roll at the Walmart fabric dept. The reusable wonder tape (or whatever it's called) is the same stuff I think? I've been happy with my sandpaper dots for years though sometimes they get in the way because you can't see through them (you can make your own cheaply with regular sandpaper and double-sided tape). I've heard a lot of talk lately about putting clear nail polish on rulers, sprinkling salt on them and letting them dry. I will have to try that. I also put my pinky on the fabric right next to the ruler to keep it from moving.
