The good news, I have all my squares cut! Good job considering I spend so much time on this web site.
The bad news, once cut, other than looking from side to side to see if I can tell a difference, how can I tell the 'right' side from the wrong side? |
I use the side that I think is the prettier side.

If you're wanting to keep consistent, then mark each piece with an "x" for the wrong side. |
I have heard that there isn't a right or wrong side. That being said, I think one side usually is a little more vibrant. I try to put that side on the "right" side. If you can't tell, then there is no right or wrong side.

One will have more of a bleed-through look and the other will be crisper. Take your pick! depending on the area of the fabric, it can vary from one side to the other.
I think it's really a matter of preference...whichever is the prettiest to you but just have to be consistent.

there is no right or wrong side- use the side you like best. i pay for both sides of my fabric and feel it is fine to use which ever side works in my project- regardless of what side some may (think) is wrong.
check out water color quilts- many many squares the (muted) side is used instead of the brighter side. with batiks as with most hand dyes-both sides are used equally-as both are dyed. printed fabrics may have a more pronounced difference- but both sides are still used when it works for the project. |
You paid for both sides. Use the one you like best.
fons and Porter say there is no right or wrong side to Batiks
because batiks are dye all the way through, there is no right or wrong side only an aesthetic side, the one most appealing to you.
Thank you everyone.
flip a coin
Yup, what they said.
A hint for you for next time, decide which side you like best and mark the back side every few inches with chalk pencil BEFORE you cut and you won't have to examine each piece as you get to it in order to be consistent. |

It it's that hard to tell it probably doesn't matter which side you use. Just choose the side you like best.
the side you like better depending on the square. that is one of the reasons i love batiks. no oops I sewed the wrong side up.
with some batiks, it does not matter...
If its a TRUE batik it really doesn't matter.

I haven't sewn with batiks a lot, but never worried about a right or wrong side...maybe there are some it matters, but never has for me.
If you find it hard to tell, so will everyone else, so in my opinion, it doesn't matter.
there isnt a right or wrong side from what ive have been told
honestly I can't tell the difference in mine, so I just use whatever
I don't think it matters which is the right side on batiks. I find they are great for paper piecing because you don't have to worry about the right/wrong side.
There is no right side. Use whatever side you want. Love batiks!
I am so glad you asked this - and I'm so glad to hear that most everyone does what I do, pick the side that works best for whatever you're making.
They are dyed, not printed, so there is no wrong side. Use whichever side you wish.

I don't think there is such a thing as a right side. Which ever one you prefer. I have often used the "wrong" side of fabric which then makes it the "right" side. So right or wrong is a matter of choice.
The right side is the side you pick for your quilt!

Sometimes there is really no difference, but I take the crisper side :)
What side you like the best is the right side.
Ususally one side is a litle bit frostier, I use the side I like the best, and often it is the reverse frosty side to soften the impact.
I use alot of batiks and sometimes there is one side that may be alittle more vibrant but overall there is no right or wrong side. That is the joy of batiks, especially for applique.

most times, both sides are the 'right side' ... and best of all, you paid for both sides. Choose the one you like best.
ps ... I have the same challenge and just give in to what is face up looking at me |
I use the side that is prettiest.
