The good news, I have all my squares cut! Good job considering I spend so much time on this web site.

The bad news, once cut, other than looking from side to side to see if I can tell a difference, how can I tell the 'right' side from the wrong side?

Sadiemae 09-27-2011 09:39 AM

I use the side that I think is the prettier side.

ditto!!

If you're wanting to keep consistent, then mark each piece with an "x" for the wrong side.

susie-susie-susie 09-27-2011 09:44 AM

I have heard that there isn't a right or wrong side. That being said, I think one side usually is a little more vibrant. I try to put that side on the "right" side. If you can't tell, then there is no right or wrong side.

One will have more of a bleed-through look and the other will be crisper. Take your pick! depending on the area of the fabric, it can vary from one side to the other.

leiladylei54 09-27-2011 09:48 AM

I think it's really a matter of preference...whichever is the prettiest to you but just have to be consistent.

This is what I was told as well...and usually if there is a pattern to the fabric (leaves, etc) the image will be crisper on one side...

ckcowl 09-27-2011 10:02 AM

there is no right or wrong side- use the side you like best. i pay for both sides of my fabric and feel it is fine to use which ever side works in my project- regardless of what side some may (think) is wrong.
check out water color quilts- many many squares the (muted) side is used instead of the brighter side.
with batiks as with most hand dyes-both sides are used equally-as both are dyed. printed fabrics may have a more pronounced difference- but both sides are still used when it works for the project.

dunster 09-27-2011 10:11 AM

You paid for both sides. Use the one you like best.

sewwhat1938 09-27-2011 10:19 AM

fons and Porter say there is no right or wrong side to Batiks

Havplenty 09-27-2011 10:36 AM

because batiks are dye all the way through, there is no right or wrong side only an aesthetic side, the one most appealing to you.

orangeroom 09-27-2011 10:41 AM

Thank you everyone.

Glassquilt 09-27-2011 10:48 AM

flip a coin

katier825 09-27-2011 10:58 AM

Yup, what they said.

A hint for you for next time, decide which side you like best and mark the back side every few inches with chalk pencil BEFORE you cut and you won't have to examine each piece as you get to it in order to be consistent.

It it's that hard to tell it probably doesn't matter which side you use. Just choose the side you like best.

sahm4605 09-27-2011 12:24 PM

the side you like better depending on the square. that is one of the reasons i love batiks. no oops I sewed the wrong side up.

jaciqltznok 09-27-2011 12:37 PM

with some batiks, it does not matter...

MaryKatherine 09-28-2011 03:02 AM

If its a TRUE batik it really doesn't matter.

patchsamkim 09-28-2011 03:04 AM

I haven't sewn with batiks a lot, but never worried about a right or wrong side...maybe there are some it matters, but never has for me.

jitkaau 09-28-2011 03:31 AM

If you find it hard to tell, so will everyone else, so in my opinion, it doesn't matter.

azdesertrat 09-28-2011 03:35 AM

there isnt a right or wrong side from what ive have been told

Dolphyngyrl 09-28-2011 03:54 AM

honestly I can't tell the difference in mine, so I just use whatever

lfletcher 09-28-2011 04:11 AM

I don't think it matters which is the right side on batiks. I find they are great for paper piecing because you don't have to worry about the right/wrong side.

janekonowitz 09-28-2011 04:32 AM

There is no right side. Use whatever side you want. Love batiks!

CarrieC 09-28-2011 04:37 AM

I am so glad you asked this - and I'm so glad to hear that most everyone does what I do, pick the side that works best for whatever you're making.

Bobbielinks 09-28-2011 04:56 AM

They are dyed, not printed, so there is no wrong side. Use whichever side you wish.

Batiks don't have a "Right" side Good news is you get to pick

twinkie 09-28-2011 05:27 AM

I don't think there is such a thing as a right side. Which ever one you prefer. I have often used the "wrong" side of fabric which then makes it the "right" side. So right or wrong is a matter of choice.

Anna O 09-28-2011 05:27 AM

The right side is the side you pick for your quilt!

Landers 09-28-2011 05:47 AM

Listen to Sadiemae!

The good news is: you can use either side of the fabric equally.

The bad news is: that just doubles your choices to match- ;-) sharet

carslo 09-28-2011 05:52 AM

Sometimes there is really no difference, but I take the crisper side :)

Sallyflymi 09-28-2011 06:03 AM

What side you like the best is the right side.

patdesign 09-28-2011 06:17 AM

Ususally one side is a litle bit frostier, I use the side I like the best, and often it is the reverse frosty side to soften the impact.

quilter65 09-28-2011 06:24 AM

I use alot of batiks and sometimes there is one side that may be alittle more vibrant but overall there is no right or wrong side. That is the joy of batiks, especially for applique.

this always works for me too

wraez 09-28-2011 07:11 AM

most times, both sides are the 'right side' ... and best of all, you paid for both sides. Choose the one you like best.

ps ... I have the same challenge and just give in to what is face up looking at me

lauriequilts 09-28-2011 07:42 AM

I use the side that is prettiest.
