How do you buy fabric: by color? by pattern? by designer? by impulse?

sewwhat85 03-16-2011 05:48 PM

by price here

Granna of 5 03-16-2011 05:49 PM

All of the above.lol

MsDesigns 03-16-2011 05:50 PM

never impulse.

i start with price, then i typically like certain companies (bernatex, hoffman, kaufman, etc), then its pattern (i prefer more modern designs) then finally color.

If it is to fit a need. I shop by color first, then look at the pattern, final decision is on price point.

erstan947 03-16-2011 05:53 PM

Price, color.....with a good measure of impulse:)

0tis 03-16-2011 05:55 PM

All of the above.

grugirl 03-16-2011 05:56 PM

Upon first arriving in a quilt or fabric store, I go the sale rack first and find anything I like, then see what percent is taken off. Sometimes if you finish a bolt, you get even more off. If I really like the fabric and the bolt has little on it with the deal, I finish it off.

Then, I go to the sections/colors that hold the collections I have that I build on. Examples of this for me are: Butterflies, Daisies, Black/White and Black/red/whites

I always hit the brights because I love doing bright quilts. Then, I peruse the fat quarters for any that I absolutely cannot live without for my charm quilts.

You just HAD TO ASK... didn't you?

SWChick 03-16-2011 06:01 PM

Color, print, and design of the fabric. If it doesn't talk to me I don't care how good the price is. I don't want my stash filled with good prices that I wouldn't use for anything but backings on wallhangings.

Jim's Gem 03-16-2011 06:01 PM

All the above!!!

I always check the sale corner first!!
My closest LQS has sales about every 6 weeks or so. If it's a fabric I see in that shop, I will wait for a sale, unless there's only a little left on the bolt.

weasier22 03-16-2011 06:03 PM

By pattern and color...and then there's alway impulse!! Especially when it's a good bargin and there's 50% off coupons!

DogHouseMom 03-16-2011 06:04 PM

Mostly impulse, sometimes by the pattern. If it's a fabric I just love, I'll stash it. If I have a pattern or project that I need to make I'll buy specific fabric to make it. Now that I have a decent stash, I'm finding that I have most of the fabric I need to make a specific pattern.

I have yet to make a quilt using the same fabric as the pattern, and a lot of times I dont' even use the same color-way.

shawnemily 03-16-2011 06:12 PM

All of the above! :)

jdiane318 03-16-2011 06:28 PM

I buy the fabric by the bolt.

Country1 03-16-2011 06:35 PM

I like it, then I look at price. Price is very important these days.

Anyway I can get it LOL.
Really I stick with scraps and clearance.I Got fabric today, Quilt shop quality mind you, "brand name" good stuff for 2.25 a yard, I bought 25 yards and decided to go back in the morning I will then for sure have enough to last the rest of my life! (and longer lol) I figure I will then have to stick to swapping to satisfy my NEED for new fabrics.

Mariposa 03-16-2011 07:17 PM

First, I look at my budget....then all of the above apply!!

emerald46 03-16-2011 07:22 PM

Absolutely the fabric, if I don't love it won't buy it.

oldswimmer 03-16-2011 07:25 PM

Any way I can...but hopefully on a good sale.

mom-6 03-16-2011 07:25 PM

Most of the time its primarily impulse. Color is usually what I notice first then I go for how it feels and the price. If the price is out of line with the quality of the fabric then it will probably not go home with me.

Sometimes I'm trying to find one more fabric to go with 2
or 3 I already have but need another to complete the design I have in mind.

A few weeks ago I had been going through my stash and realized that I had lots of some colors and not many of others that I really liked so I looked particularly for teals and aquas on my next shopping trip.

This is kind of funny for me. I tend to buy tons of teals and aquas. It is my favorite color by far. Has been for most of my life.

littlehud 03-16-2011 07:52 PM

It starts with price and what I need and what catches my eye.

heather1949 03-16-2011 08:23 PM

All of the above, but color first for me.

CarrieAnne 03-16-2011 08:25 PM

All of the above too!

pamkasperi 03-16-2011 10:05 PM

Impulse....

Tilladare 03-17-2011 12:54 AM

Color then pattern/design
I wouldn't know a Designer's work if it bit me

Aurora 03-17-2011 02:07 AM

All of the above.

Kathi in PA 03-17-2011 02:21 AM

All of the above!!

thenonnielady 03-17-2011 02:23 AM

color, pattern.....price. then perhaps start over..... impulse buying is another technique I employee.

Color, print, and design of the fabric. It all depends on what I am going to be using it for. I have to have a project I am going to make before I 'just' buy fabric, its too pricey to just buy it because I like it.

Marcie 03-17-2011 03:19 AM

with money!! ;-)

Aunt Retta 03-17-2011 03:22 AM

It depends what I am thinking about;often it is color,I love color and I have several favorites. I also have collections of some patterns such as white daisies or strawberries. Then I have to consider price.

19angel52 03-17-2011 04:27 AM

Impulse ... which is why I have so much stash. Sigh.

jeanneb52 03-17-2011 04:34 AM

Color, price, impulse you name it I buy fabric that way.
