never impulse.
i start with price, then i typically like certain companies (bernatex, hoffman, kaufman, etc), then its pattern (i prefer more modern designs) then finally color. |

If it is to fit a need. I shop by color first, then look at the pattern, final decision is on price point.
Price, color.....with a good measure of impulse:)
All of the above.
Upon first arriving in a quilt or fabric store, I go the sale rack first and find anything I like, then see what percent is taken off. Sometimes if you finish a bolt, you get even more off. If I really like the fabric and the bolt has little on it with the deal, I finish it off.
Then, I go to the sections/colors that hold the collections I have that I build on. Examples of this for me are: Butterflies, Daisies, Black/White and Black/red/whites I always hit the brights because I love doing bright quilts. Then, I peruse the fat quarters for any that I absolutely cannot live without for my charm quilts. You just HAD TO ASK... didn't you? |
Color, print, and design of the fabric. If it doesn't talk to me I don't care how good the price is. I don't want my stash filled with good prices that I wouldn't use for anything but backings on wallhangings.
All the above!!!
I always check the sale corner first!! My closest LQS has sales about every 6 weeks or so. If it's a fabric I see in that shop, I will wait for a sale, unless there's only a little left on the bolt. |
By pattern and color...and then there's alway impulse!! Especially when it's a good bargin and there's 50% off coupons!
Mostly impulse, sometimes by the pattern. If it's a fabric I just love, I'll stash it. If I have a pattern or project that I need to make I'll buy specific fabric to make it. Now that I have a decent stash, I'm finding that I have most of the fabric I need to make a specific pattern.
I have yet to make a quilt using the same fabric as the pattern, and a lot of times I dont' even use the same color-way. |
All of the above! :)
I buy the fabric by the bolt.
I like it, then I look at price. Price is very important these days.

Anyway I can get it LOL.
Really I stick with scraps and clearance.I Got fabric today, Quilt shop quality mind you, "brand name" good stuff for 2.25 a yard, I bought 25 yards and decided to go back in the morning I will then for sure have enough to last the rest of my life! (and longer lol) I figure I will then have to stick to swapping to satisfy my NEED for new fabrics. |
First, I look at my budget....then all of the above apply!!
Absolutely the fabric, if I don't love it won't buy it.
Any way I can...but hopefully on a good sale.
Most of the time its primarily impulse. Color is usually what I notice first then I go for how it feels and the price. If the price is out of line with the quality of the fabric then it will probably not go home with me.
Sometimes I'm trying to find one more fabric to go with 2 or 3 I already have but need another to complete the design I have in mind. A few weeks ago I had been going through my stash and realized that I had lots of some colors and not many of others that I really liked so I looked particularly for teals and aquas on my next shopping trip. |

It starts with price and what I need and what catches my eye.
All of the above, but color first for me.
All of the above too!
Impulse....
Color then pattern/design
I wouldn't know a Designer's work if it bit me |
All of the above.
All of the above!!

Color, print, and design of the fabric. It all depends on what I am going to be using it for. I have to have a project I am going to make before I 'just' buy fabric, its too pricey to just buy it because I like it.
with money!! ;-)
It depends what I am thinking about;often it is color,I love color and I have several favorites. I also have collections of some patterns such as white daisies or strawberries. Then I have to consider price.
Impulse ... which is why I have so much stash. Sigh.
Color, price, impulse you name it I buy fabric that way.
