I recently saw an interesting quilt done on solid backgrounds called Bottled Rainbows. You can google it and see it. I thought it was gorgeous. I'm also very drawn to the Amish quilts which are always solids and sometimes on black backgrounds. I believe they're beautiful!

I work out the overall design of my quilt and then search out the colors - usually use more solids than anything else. The only time I have trouble is when I try to stick to what is in my stash - I need the wide selection of several fabric stores. LOL Probably wouldn't have this trouble if I used someone else's patterns. Usually the color I want is a shade or two different than the one I have on hand. Economics is going to change my choices soon.

I think it depends on the quilt, :)

I really like solids and use them often, even all solid quilts. If you use lots of various brights and set them off with black, that makes an eye catching statement.

i am a fabric 'junkie' i love them all *except blue* solid mixed in as a blender really makes design pop.....sigh......I just plain love quilting, every step of the process !!!!!!!

I most always use solids in my quilts! they just set the prints off and add more dimention to your quilt.

My sewing room is a mess right now. It is used as a guest room also and even though it is 14 by 20 when you have a guest it is scrunched up and I cannot have all of my tables up. One of our sons is with us right now and really I would rather have him than all the stuff.

I don't purchase any solid colors anymore it seems (or should I write "it seams"...hehe). One of my mantra's about 3 years ago is that every fabric I pick up MUST be a print that reads as a solid. I love every piece of fabric to be working - if that makes sense. Even if it's just the slightest pattern... I like that.

I do agree I have seen some quilting that turns solid fabric into a work of art...but.. that would not be my hand quilting.. or anything that I can afford to have done. It's sure gorgeous when it's done right.

I am not big on solids but do use them sometimes with a nine patch to bring out the busy fabrics on my preemie quilts

I LOVE solids in 2 color quilts. Otherwise, I only use them as an accent. I've seen some really fine quilts made with solids, but these women were artists (really, they went to art school and all).
