I know this topic probably has been worn out - but I have been trying to sort through and organize my fabrics.
The question is - I have sorted it by colors - Christmas is separate - but if you have several fabrics from the same collection, do you store them together?

Do you organize your florals separately, especially if they have several colors in them?
HELP!!!

JuneC- this topic has been covered but I have yet to find a system that works for me :(
Maybe someone has an idea, thanks for the topic!

I would say if they are from the same collection to keep those fabrics together to make it easier when you decide what you are going to make so they all coordinate.

1. Christmas Fabrics
2. Fabrics from same collection
3. Solid Colors sorted by colors to keep all in the same spot
(like all reds, oranges etc.) so at a glance you can see what you have
4. Batiks - all in one spot sorted by colors

How to Organize Scraps of Fabrics:
1. How to organize your scraps of fabrics

2. look at this cool way to organize your scraps of fabric

3. favorite method of organizing scraps: http://quiltville.com/scrapusersystem.shtml

I am surfing and adding more links to my blog and here is a link for all of us to enjoy more things:

i keep collections together and then themes.

so it would be batiks, contemporary, ombre, hand dyed, florals, etc.

i also sort the collection by what is used for quilting, handbags, home dec, etc.

Crafty, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm going to save these.
Today I was in my sewing room going crazy. So discouraging.
One of my problems is I have a double closet with lots of shelves but they're too deep.
Maybe I can get DH to do something with them.
To the poster who did pics, thank you! They look great.

TonnieLoree 05-04-2011 06:40 PM

I'm supposed to organize? Back to the drawing board.

Sandee 05-04-2011 07:24 PM

I just put it in zip lock bags & put it up on the shelf. I'm a good organizer but I lost my room & I'm not getting it back for awhile. So I'm in the "make due" mode for who knows how long. But I don't have any where near the amt in the above pictures! I'd give my hubby a heart attack if I had that much!
I have to say I'm jealous of that wonderful display!!

Fantastic

I think it depends on what you "collect". I have just started and already have too much...LOL. I do know that I should probably seperate my 30s fabrics because I really like them and am getting quite a collection :D Christmas I probably need to keep seperate as well.

connie_1936 05-04-2011 09:35 PM

WOW, what a wonderful collection. wish i had that much room, i could buy more fabric.

stephaniequeen 05-04-2011 09:44 PM

I unfortunately do not have a room so all my fabric is organized by color and placed inside those plastic grocery bags and stored in the trunk of my car. So when I need something I go out to the parking lot and spend hours sorting fabric in front of everyone.

HOW BIG IS YOUR SEWING ROOM -

OMG - If I had that much fabric stored in the open - I think it would give my husband a heart attack - but it is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe someone has an idea, thanks for the topic!

I know it has been discussed before -many, many, many times but there are a lot of new members that might have other ideas.

But people with ADHD are not good at organizing - so it kind of gets over whelming at times

I fall in love with a fabric, buy it & store it away- While going though my stash - I have found several duplicate fabric purchases - guess I loved the fabric.

I have been trying to organize by color - but I have a lot of flower prints that could fall into several colored areas.

I have FQ - "Want to be FQ" and smaller square, rectangluar, triangle pieces, but after reading about people that are looking for 3" of a certain fabric, I am almost afraid to cut anything.

I guess that is why my husband seems to think I am a pack rat.... BUT I AM A PROUD MEMBER!

sewobsessed1 05-06-2011 09:25 AM

What is this 'organize' you speak of? :)

AliKat 05-06-2011 01:30 PM

I don't keep collections together unless it is specifically for a planned project. Too often collections are repetitive prints in different colors and that would lessen the impact.

Otherwise, I do as is generally does:
- special themes - Christmas, cats, halloween, etc
- batiks
- by color
