I make pet beds for the humane shelter. So I can grab scraps whenever I need them. I always have some at the ready.

I use covered trays. When I want to work on something else I can slap the cover on the tray and stack them.

My current project in two trays - one for the unfinished 2" squares that will be 4 patch units and 4" squares that will become HST's, the other tray for units in some state of having been sewn. Finished project will be a Buckeye Beauty.

Thanks for asking this question, I had wondered the same thing. And I have enjoyed seeing the various ideas. Thanks to everyone.

I keep a re-purposed plastic box to the right of my sewing machine that holds by leaders/enders pieces. As I press my done pieces for my current project, I press my leaders/enders pieces too and put them in another project box. Once the box next to the machine is empty, I bring in the box for the next step and then repeat. It's amazing how fast a quilt grows.
