I like the attitude of this reply.

I second that motion. It is all a learning process and if you quit learning and experiencing new things then the love for it dies!

Zebracar 06-27-2011 02:24 PM

I'd say I'm intermediate for piecing, hand appliqué, and hand quilting. I'm definitely a beginner when it comes to FMQ! That's one of the many wonderful things about quilting, there is always something new to learn!

sarahrachel 06-27-2011 02:31 PM

I'm a beginner at best. I've only completed 2 quilts and finished 1 quilt top along with the quilt I'm hand piecing now. There are so many more advanced quilters on here, and I wish I were half as good as some of the talented quilters on here!

bjeriann 06-27-2011 02:42 PM

I've been piecing and appliqueing for a long time. Sometimes I think hey I'm pretty good at this, then the what was I thinking hits. I'm an intermediate. I love a challenging pattern. I don't want to be an expert because there is always something to learn and improve on.

grandma Janice 06-27-2011 07:29 PM

I'm a self taught quilter who has been quilting 25-30 years but I wouldn't dare say I was an experienced quilter. I love traditional patterns and make lots of scrap quilts. It's a hobby not a profession so I'd give myself a rating of average at best.

deedum 06-27-2011 07:38 PM

It's all relative! I have been quilting for 3 1/2 yrs now. Not a beginner anymore, certainly nowhere near a perfectionist (regardless of what my friends say). I guess just mediocre or just a tad above! I am ok with that for now :)

Flying_V_Goddess 06-27-2011 07:49 PM

I feel like I'm Advanced and think I can quilt anything when in reality I'm more like a Advanced Beginner who tries to tackle the harder stuff.

QuiltnLady1 06-27-2011 07:50 PM

I am a consistent learner -- I have more sewing under my belt than quilting. I can piece pretty well, but my quilting is pretty basic. I quilted in the 70's for a while (in between making clothes), then stopped for a while and picked it up again in 2000.

I love experimenting -- and am more apt to deviate from a pattern than to follow it faithfully.

desertrose 06-27-2011 08:35 PM

I don't know if I can even consider myself a novice in the light of what I'm reading.

Woodster 06-28-2011 02:46 AM

If that's what you do and rate yourself that low, I might as well go muck barns!

Moonglow 06-28-2011 02:48 AM

Happily average and constantly learning.

molly oldham 06-28-2011 02:49 AM

I am my own worse critic. Next to the quilts I see here, I'm honestly below average. But I'm still learning and loving the process.

teacherbailey 06-28-2011 02:54 AM

My piecing and color selection are pretty good but mostly I have fun trying new things....and since I hate, hate, hate the layering and quilting part....I'm still very much a beginner there----and don't care!

willis.debra 06-28-2011 03:21 AM

I rate myself an artist. If everyone of my quilts was perfect they wouldn't be the originals they are. That said, even though I have been doing this for 20 yrs, i'm still learning. LOL

schoolteacher 06-28-2011 03:23 AM

I also have seen the fantastic quilts here> I am not a perfectionist but still think there are many areas to improve. There is NO way I will put my "masterpieces" on here so with you, Brenda K, they'll take them up above to keep warm in God's paradise!!

:XD: Is there anything below "SUCK". After seeing the quilts you all have made I don't think I will ever show mine. Maybe in abut 50 ot 60 years, but don't figure I'll last that long. My family and friends will just have to take below sucky quilts. BrendaK[/quote]

cd 06-28-2011 03:27 AM

will always be a beginner but a quilt for fun. love to try new patterns and/or make up me own.

quilt3311 06-28-2011 03:35 AM

Addicted! Ok just being funny. I guess I would have to say advanced as I do most techniques. I love designing too, and rarely use a commercial pattern. I have been at this for 45 years though so guess that has something to do with it.

Dolphyngyrl 06-28-2011 03:46 AM

I would say intermediate even though I haven't done that many my skills have grown alot since my first

jitkaau 06-28-2011 03:52 AM

I have always thought that "at least I am improving each time". However, I have had quite a number of people approach me lately to ask me if I would quilt their quilts. I mentioned that there were two other people who do it professionally in the town and they said that they like my quilting better. So now I am starting to not be so nervous when I do the quilting for someone else but still find myself on edge that it be a good job - so I suppose I am at the crossroad of getting good.

moreland 06-28-2011 04:00 AM

I cannot believe anyone who has quilted several years can rightly be called a "newbie" or an "inexperienced" quilter. Give your egos a boost and say you are intermediates, at least!!! Just because we are not all artist with our quilts does not make us "newbies"--After your 3 or 4th quilt, it's time to give yourself a promotion. IMHO

Debbie B 06-28-2011 04:03 AM

I've only been quilting a couple of years and almost everything that I've learned has come from on-line, especially from this board. So, I rate myself a beginner who is trying to improve.

I guess I do too if you rate yourself a newbie after six years. I have been quilting for a year and a half and i THOUGHT i was getting pretty good.

Kat29803 06-28-2011 04:11 AM

Happy!

SharBear 06-28-2011 04:13 AM

We are ALL our own worst critics!

Come on ladies (and gents?) - step back 5 feet and look at your work - don't get out the magnifying glass and look for "character spots" - that's what my great aunt called imperfections. If we didn't show people our imperfections they would NEVER find them.

Have FUN with it and learn something - it keeps the brain young!

quiltmom04 06-28-2011 04:23 AM

It's surprising how quilters rate themselves. I sewed for years before I started quilting, so I was an very good seamstress. Then when I was quilted, I never took classes because I thought they were for "experts". When I finally did start to show and compare my work, I realized I was pretty good. But I still look at some of the work on this board and feel so inferior. I think a lot of quilters feel like I do. But I also know quilters who have made ONE wall hanging and feel like they are ready to start teaching classes.

sueisallaboutquilts 06-28-2011 04:26 AM

I've been making quilts for over 20 years and have learned a lot and continue to do so. Some of mine come out a lot better than others. I quilt for pleasure and to make things for my loved ones. I'm the only quilter in the whole family so they think I'm an expert but I know I'm not! LOL
I love it so much and don't care if I ever get past a rating :D:D

quilter1 06-28-2011 04:30 AM

I consider myself an advanced beginner. Some things I am pretty good at, but there is always something more that I want to learn. I have never tried paper piecing or Hawaiian quilting, but I am OK at applique and patchwork, and I am still on the learning curve for FMQ. Each completed project has taught me something, I hope. Soon it is time to retire so I can spend more time quilting.

arimuse 06-28-2011 04:50 AM

Honestly, if I rated myself I would probably give up quilting altogether - sharet

Same here. I enjoy the whole process of quilting. Been at it for just over 10 years. Have a wonderful feeling when I finish a quilt. Favorite part is cutting the fabric, smile. I feel that I do a good job at what I do, smile. Get a wonderful feeling when I finish each and every quilt. Will not rate myself though.

Krystyna 06-28-2011 05:29 AM

By the standards of this board, I am awful.
BUT by my own standards - I'm terrific!
I do what I want, never follow patterns, and I'm very happy with the results -- even when they aren't what I expected. In fact, I never know what to expect to come out of my machine. It's always a surprise!

quiltymom 06-28-2011 05:47 AM

Been quilting about 26 years,I really can't rate myself because I still make mistakes.

kycatgirl 06-28-2011 05:51 AM

I will always be a beginner.

Bernie942 06-28-2011 05:54 AM

Beginner, hopefully someday a master quilter. LOL

Iamquilter 06-28-2011 05:55 AM

I have been making and quilting since the 50's and still learn from people on the board. I have quilted over 200 quilts for other people and enjoy it.Have sold 100's of baby quilts and people always come back for more so I guess I am doing a pretty good job, I'll let them rate how I am doing.

flikkem 06-28-2011 05:56 AM

improving....I think...with each new project.

so-sew 06-28-2011 06:00 AM

I believe I rate myself lower than others would rate me. It's my type A inclination to do so. :)

raedar63 06-28-2011 06:07 AM

Beginner forever lol. Been sewing off and on since I was nine. Never have gotten one right. I mostly stick with scrappies they are so forgiving. Although I am not afraid to tackle anything,Right now I am working on the Toni Whitney Tantanka pattern yikes!
