Happy with myself but room for lots of improvement.
On piecing - advanced beginner; on quilting - I don't, I send it out to my local longarm quilter. I tried once - it looked like a four-year-old had been playing in my sewing supplies. LOL
intermediate with flashes of both beginner and advanced popping up.
Definitely a beginner.
Even though I have been quilting for over 20 years I consider myself intermediate. :-)
I rate myself - need for improvement - some quilts come out wonderful and some not so wonderful and I have been quilting for approx 5 years... but I am improving slowly but will I every be great ... I don't think so... Not to myself - I agree people love them and the smile on their faces is enough for me...
No rating ... just happy.
Pretty darn good, BUT every time I go to an AQS quilt show I know that I won't live long enough to get THAT good!!

Advanced beginner

Most say I am a wonderful quilter. I don't strive for perfection because in my culture one can not achieve it because only Wakan Tanka creates perfection, It is deemed disrespectful.
Everything I make or work on has at least one flaw, a life lesson to keep me humble. |
I rate myself as a beginner/intermediate. Depends on the project. Some of them make me feel like a kindergartener
I quilt entirely for my own pleasure & sanity. As an outlet for creative expression, I give myself an E for Enjoyment!

I try to quilt with a "beginners mind",as a Buddhist would say.
Every project is a new game-even if it is a pattern that I have done before-the choice of block, fabric, size, surface design, etc. I will try anything as far a technique goes, and frankly the end result is never what I imagined it would be when I started out. Which is part of the attraction: seeing how the idea distills through the process. I have seen countless wonderful quilts on this board-from first quilts on- and I view each as a conversation between the quilter and the piece and the piece and the rest of us. I could never make anyone else's quilt-we all add to the dialogue w/ our own unique viewpoint and work, and because of that each and every quilt is a valuable part of the whole. |
I would say I am an advanced beginner into intermediate level. Definitely not novice or beginner but not a perfect quilter either. I can traditionally piece, do curved piecing, paper piecing and I can applique in several ways although I dont like doing it. My binding skills are so so at best.
I send my quilts out for LA. |
I think we are all our worst critic. But as all things go, there will always be someone more advanced...so as long as you are happy with the talent YOU possess, and what YOU can do, you are a winner! It really depends on the day for me...I love trying new things and challenges and generally quite happy with what I do...as a newbie + quilter.
Intermediate most days.
I am a beginner, and always will be a beginner. I have issues that affect everything I do, but if I am a beginner, then everything I do is a learning experience. Since I also have short-term memory deficits, I have to relearn everything constantly. I do have my "expert" seconds though.
How do I rate myself as a quilter? As my grandmother use to say "fair to middlin" ;-)
It's hard to even know how to judge-one time I'd say intermediate and then I see quilt shows or some of the ones on this board and I am certainly humbled to ..."I gotta LONG way to go!!" Enjoying it all and still love to learn!
I've been quilting on and off for 25 years. Just in the last 7 have I really put my heart and soul into it.....raising kids winding down. I will never consider myself 'accomplished'. Once I master it, I will move on to something else....so no point in striving for mastery because this is what I love to do. As long as I am pleased, then that is good enough for me. If it is an expecially challenging quilt, as long as I know I put my best effort forth, I embracing the 'oops'. My big challenge right now....free motion quilting. With each quilt I make...wow! I see progress! That thrills the daylights out of me!!!

But I still look at some of the work on this board and feel so inferior. I think a lot of quilters feel like I do. Absolutely gorgeous! |
Fair to middlin' with a chance of improvement. I generally don't rate myself because the joy and satisfaction of FINISHING a reasonable piece feels so much better than the comparison to others or the pointing out of mistakes.

It depends.......I've been hand quilting for 20+ years so feel fairly comfortable, but I am definitely a newbie at FMQ as I'm just beginning to practice. It's that way with old comfortable techniques or the new techniques :D :D

Really? I am a beginner, but I guess I learn fast? I took a quilt top that I finished for my MIL to a LQS for her to quilt on her long arm. I was disappointed in the end result :( I thought "I could do better than that" so I started trying, and you know what? I was right ! I want to be as good as Patsy Thompson - but I am NO WHERE close. But I keep trying. |

Rating myself as a piecer is a difficult task. I think it depends on the block I am trying to piece. Just finished some 18" blocks and everyone turned out perfect. All the poings were where they need to be and not cut off. Another time and different blocks were not so perfect. So some days I am a beginner and some days intermediate.
I love all aspects of quilting (except PPing). Wouldn't rate myself, but I'm happy (satisfied) with what I do.

I have been quilting for many years now and hope than I am at the intermediate range. I really don't like to rate my self or others.
I am totally a newbie! Its funny on here I am so amazed by the work. I feel like my stuff is so basic. But when I show other people what I normally think of basic - they are amazed.
I think we are hard on ourselves becuase we spend time surronded by ohter who also do what we do. In most cases I bet the people in our lives (other than our great quilt board life) think we are more amazing than we realize :) |
good enough for me
Enthusiastic! still needs practice!
I consider myself a confident beginner and I may never get past that. I like learning new techniques and as long as my friends and family keep on loving what I do that is okay with me.
I think I am fairly ok until I see all these other quilters. Then I consider myself very poor.
