How do you keep your bobbins from getting tangled and messy

quilter girl 01-09-2010 10:59 AM

Well I don't know about the messy part - but I put mine in a box that checks came in and one of those plastic craft boxes with the dividers in it with the lid that snaps down. I have used that clear vinyl and wrapped in around thread to keep it from unwinding I wonder it that would work the same on a bobbin? Might have to give it a try.

crashnquilt 01-09-2010 11:08 AM

I use the small kind of terry like pony tail holders. I put one around the bobbin and then put the bobbin into a box for storage. You can get the pony tail holders at Wal-Mart. You want the tiny small baby size, they are perfect for any size bobbin. I use them on my large longarm bobbins too.

cutebuns 01-09-2010 11:16 AM

I have a ring that goes around my pin holder that has a groove that they sit in that is great, as well as I also have a hanging board that has little pegs on it as well, this is great as it keeps them up and less likely to be knocked around

sharon b 01-09-2010 11:29 AM

I use the small pony tail holders and they work great

I use the plastic, circular bobbin holders. They work great and I can turn my bobbin so that the end of the thread is facing downward, where it won't move. This keeps me from pulling my hair out and I really like how neat everything is. Plus, if it drops off the table onto the floor, it doesn't pop out and my bobbins don't "run" all over the floor, leaving me with a huge thread tangle to try and straighten out. (I hate that!)

BellaBoo 01-09-2010 01:26 PM

The problem I have using the pony tail bands is I can't see the color of the thread on the bobbin. So I make sure I put the same color band as the same color thread. That'a big help. I like the round bobbin holders too. Have you seen this?

I ordered one from Connecting Threads (cheaper) and it's super for applique, handpiecing, or mending, all the colors needed in one place.

I have a couple boxes from the fishing tackle department that are flat, snap shut and have lots of moveable dividers inside.
I put all spools and bobbins of the same thread together in a section, so I don't try to match up threaded bobbins with spools they don't belong to.

I was given a "donut" from a secret santa and LOVE it! You can get them almost anywhere now. I had looked at them, but didn't know if it would work, so did not purchase one. It's the best gift I've ever been given, so much better than the plastic boxes you buy made especially to hold them. The donut is sort of rubbery plastic material and when you snap your bobbin in, it holds it well and I have not had one pop out.

Oklahoma Suzie 01-09-2010 02:39 PM

I bought a round bobbin holder at my lqs. I also put them on a tread holder that I have.

This is a great tip. I noticed when I was shopping for them that the containers are the same brand/similar style as what they sell in the crafts aisle, and generally less expensive!

MamaBear61 01-09-2010 03:29 PM

Mine are in a very small fishing tackle box that has several quite small compartments. Won this at a trade show and since I don't fish it made it's way into the sewing room

littlehud 01-09-2010 06:10 PM

I keep mine on my thread holder. I can get three on each holder.

sewnsewer2 01-09-2010 06:24 PM

I use a blue (or purple) rubber ring for bobbins. I got mine at my LQS.

blahel 01-09-2010 07:06 PM

i keep my bobbins on my thread holder too but i keep the thread on it as well so they are always together so I dont have to look for the matching bobbin.

Wow, now that is wonderful! If I had the extra money I'd order one right away!! I wonder if hubby would take the hint and get it for me for Valentine's Day. Posting a picture of it to cover his computer should be enough of a hint, right?

I want to get a second doughnut to hold my threads that are not 100% cotton. Besides, I've run out of space so I sort of need another one.

I have several of the round rubber circles that hold the bobbins.........I use one color for my embroidery thread bobbins, another for piecng thread, and another for quilting thread........I really like them.

Boston1954 01-10-2010 04:02 PM

I have a little tray that holds about 25 of them on their sides. When I put them in, I try to make sure the last inch is underneath.

Busy Lizzy 01-10-2010 04:10 PM

Hi Everyone.
Thanks for all your help. I did go to Connecting Threads and saw the doughnuts and I think I just may invest in a few of them without the thread, they were reasonable . Thanks again

Pinkiris 01-10-2010 04:30 PM

If you put a golf tee through the bobbin hole, then you can stick the golf tee into the hole on the spool of matching thread. Keeps matching threads together.

Might your husband have some golf tees that he wouldn't miss??

We bought a doughnut made of silicon like the kitchen spatulas and hot pads. The bobbins slide in nice and tight and they can't come unwound. The next time I see them for sale I may buy 3 or 4 more.

Darren

Update: OK, I just saw the post by BellaBoo and that is what we have, but there is no way we would pay $36 for that. I'm going to check on ebay.

BellaBoo 01-10-2010 06:00 PM

The one I posted is full of pre filled Masterpiece Frostings thread and it's on sale at Connecting Threads.

iamsogone 01-12-2010 06:02 AM

i went to the dollar store and bought those cheap multicolor ponytail holders i think you get like a hundred for $1 i put them on my bobbins and my threads

rannyof3 01-12-2010 07:04 AM

I have a couple of the "doughnuts". Certainly didn't pay that much as they are only one color. Wal Mart and Joanns both carry them and I really like mine. The "rubber" holds the bobbins so they aren't rolling around...

King's Daughter 01-12-2010 07:31 AM

I like to keep the bobbin with the thread, so I bought several packages of those bobbin holders that fit into the top of the spool of thread, and the bobbin snaps into the holder. However, I also bought several sets of thread from Connecting Threads, and the holes on the spools are too big for the bobbin holders. I don't yet have a way to organize my thread neatly (it's mostly in a drawer), so for now, I take one of those bendy plastic drinking straws, fold it at the bend, and put the folded end down through the hole in the spool of thread; then I put the bobbin on the piece of straw that is sticking up out of the hole. Works for now.

nativetexan 01-12-2010 07:32 AM

I have a small plastic box with lid and compartments for my Janome ones and a larger one for my old Singer bobbins.

GladGrams 01-12-2010 07:43 AM

I just ordered a kind of holder thing that attaches the bobbin to the thread from which it came in an effort to be sure I have the same thread on the top on bottom. HOW I am going to store them NEVER occurred to me!

mingorose 01-12-2010 08:11 AM

I just bought a bobbin holder from Nancy's NOtions. It's foam and you just put the bobbin in a slot so you can see what color is on it. Holds about 35 or so bobbins and is flat and can even be cut to smaller size to fit your storage drawer.

MoMoSews 01-12-2010 08:34 AM

I too use the rubbery circular holder. The bobbins stay in place and end of threads are kept in place.

BellaBoo 01-12-2010 08:38 AM

It's amazing how much post text is not understood. I got many messages saying I was nuts paying $36 dollars for one of the plastic donuts. Ladies it is full of bobbins prewound in every color of Masterpiece thread. One of the best brands of thread for sewing. The bobbins are called Frostings and are usually sold in sets. It is not a multi color empty donut.

BellaBoo 01-12-2010 09:11 AM

Forgot to say I bought it at Connecting Thread for $28.80. Great value! The Frosting threads sell for $10 for a set of 12 so even at the higher price the donut itself cost $6. And it's very pretty to look at. :-D

Greendragon6889 01-12-2010 09:42 AM

I also have mine on a thread holder, the only problem is my cat gets them and I have string rapped around everything..I'll have to get a box for them.

bstanbro 01-12-2010 11:14 AM

I have a pastic box made for bobbins with indentations to keep each bobbin standing up in its own slot. But lately, I've started using a glass-headed pin to attach the bobbin to the spool of thread I used when I wound it, so each bobbin is with its own matching spool. Works great. I keep my spools on one of those wooden racks with pegs that you hang on the wall--and I love that too!

Mamagus 01-12-2010 11:21 AM

My sis got me one of these as part of Christmas gift this year... it falls apart every freaking time I touch it! I am thinking that I might hot glue the sections together cuz I love the way the bobbins are gripped in the little holders.

And the best part is that when it falls on the floor the bobbins don't go rolling out. I hated my old box for that! I'd knock it off the table and then the bobbins would jump around and play together until there was a HUGE thread tangle. Used to drive me insane. An instructor in class watched this happen and she (God bless her!) actually mailed me her doughnut to keep. I've faithfully used it ever since and never had to deal with another tangled mess. :D

donnajean 01-12-2010 01:09 PM

There are plastic boxes just for bobbins. When I got into quilting back in 1996, my sister would send me all kins of quilting items, so I don't know where she purchased them. Each case hold 10-12 bobbins.

bjh11 01-12-2010 04:19 PM

I'm new to this site...can't believe how much I have learned already....LOVE IT Thanks for all the info.....

I use these, too, although I bought them at a quilt show! I also color code - use one that matches the color of thread on the bobbin.

BettyM 01-12-2010 05:48 PM

I see someone else had this same idea. Sorry to be redundant.

pc1camp 01-12-2010 08:47 PM

I do use the pony tail holders, but put them in plastic ice trays.
