So many great ideas! I have settled on one and am having a good time organizing. I thought I would dread it, but it is very satisfying. I am about half done...and still discovering fabric I forgot I had (imagine that).

This was how I did it until I got commercial racks and now just use the bolts fabrics come on. My less that a yard pieces are still folded using the ruler method and stored in a bookcase.

I used to fold around a ruler, now I use plastic boards.

Be careful with using cardboard if it is not acid free - you can stain and ruin your fabric after a while.

i use the 6"x24" ruler for everything 1/2 yd & over... wrap around ruler, slide out the ruler, fold the fabric in half... looks really nice in the shelves that way..

that's a great idea to separate the stacks... putting that on my list for my next trip to joanne... got the new catalog today & muslin isn't listed on sale... finished off what i had, so taking the 50% coupon to work monday...

I recently reorganized all my fabric in my newly redone sewing room by folding the fabrics around boards and folding like the ladies described here. (Some around boards, some are just folded.) I am so happy I did - I bought a lovely cutting table with drawers and had hoped to use it to store fabric as well as cut it, but and found that I couldn't see my fabric when it was all stacked up. By folding I got twice as much in a drawer - and I can see everything! It's amazing the amount of fat quarters (280) and yardage I have in that table! I have other fabric drawers also, but most of the cottons live here. Thank you all for your ideas!

I use the fabric coroplast boards, almost done putting my stash on them. Love the organization and I can find whatever I'm looking for in a little time.

I also like the way brosier has done her thread. I have mine in the ArtBin thread organizer boxes but am not too happy with it - can't see the colors well enough looking down into the box. But I'm not sure I will have enough of a wall to dedicate to the spool holders.

I fold mine selvage to fold, then in half again, fold to fold. This makes it a standard width. I then fold it lengthwise so that it fits in my shelf. The front of the fabric, facing out, is folded neatly and the same width. The length may vary because of the fabric lengths, but they are usually close (and it's at the back so who cares?).

That is essentially what I do, but I just fold until I have a nice smaller size piece of fabric. I can unroll what I want to cut off and refold for the next time.

I don't have it all folded uniformly, but do think it is important to occ refold it.

I store mine also in a bookcase and just reorganized all of my fabric. I cut out cardboard and also used cereal box fronts and backs, folded the fabric to the length of the boards then wrapped the fabric and stored them upright likes books on the shelf. Worked great, cardboard is cheap - had friends saving cereal boxes for me, and was able to even color code all of my fabrics. Love the way it looks.

The problem with cardboard is that it is a wood product, and wood products that are not specifically treated to be acid-free (archival quality) contain acid that can gradually degrade fabric that is in contact with it. This is why so many antique quilts that were stored in cedar chests have brown lines along the folds where the fabric was in contact with the wood.
