I only throw away scraps that are too small to use. If I have a fabric I think I will never use because I don't find it attractive, I give it to the Senior Citizens Store, along with anything else they can sell or use. I hate to throw something away when it can be of use to someone.

I agree totally!

SuzyQ 08-10-2011 12:20 PM

Terrible! I keep pretty much every scrap ... never know when I will need a teeny bit of something

ckcowl 08-10-2011 12:28 PM

OMG!!! i'm not a hoarder---but i definitly do not THROW AWAY- when it comes to fabrics, orphan blocks ect...i pass them on to some one who will do something with them- and appreciates the opportunity!
i'm afraid to even read posts on this one---i think i would have a heart attack to read of any of you throwing away instead of sharing

I so totally understand how you feel!!

Nolee 08-10-2011 01:12 PM

I thought you were asking about things around the house, other than quilting fabric. At that I am REALLY GOOD!! I hate clutter of any kind but am not OCD, LOL. As far as fabric is concerned, the only thing I do not keep is crumbs. Sewing them together would make me crazy.

SharBear 08-10-2011 01:16 PM

I'm a thrower - all scraps either go in a bag for ladies that make scrappy quilts for children or to the Ways and Means table at my guild.

About now I feel like the guy who tries to finish the internet...it just isn't going to happen! So...do you throw this stuff away, do you keep it until you use, do you close the door & don't worry about using it?

Now that my stuff like that is sorted into color families including white, blacks and browns, into gallon baggies in a row on the shelf, I find myself getting into them frequently. Ironed flat- they take up a lot less space!!!
That said, I recently gave away a whole large log cabin quilt top I really disliked - that was easy! LOL!!!
....and I do toss quite a lot during the sorting... or give bigger pieces away. I don't keep any scrap under a 2 1/2" square.
Sorting, instead of sewing are my "awake-in-the-wee-hours of-the-night" projects ! (No damage to me or ongoing projects done!)

Ah but this is not throwing away, this is passing it on and very admirable!! :D

babyboomerquilter 08-10-2011 01:44 PM

I keep most sraps if they are 2 - 3 inches at least. They come in handy when appliquing

Rosie the "Ripper" 08-10-2011 01:52 PM

I put them in ziplock bags and then take the bags to our quilt retreat each year. They always have a "free to take" table. It makes someone very happy and in turn makes me happy.

GG 08-10-2011 02:20 PM

I keep the strips there is a lady in our group who sews the smallest strips together and makes bibs to go over sea to help the children.

patdesign 08-10-2011 02:27 PM

My mom was a pack rat, and her daughter has a touch of the same disease.LOL:)

lowjane 08-10-2011 02:54 PM

Last year everyone I knew got a lapquilt out of my left overs. I always make strips out of the leftovers so they were waiting to be made into something! I also braided a few small rugs. SO there was not much to throw away and no guilt and a lot of happy friends!

Good for you. I try to live by that standard in clothing as well as fabrics. I donate everything possible and give away scraps when I can. After too many accumulate I take them to quilt guild or a fabric arts group and give them away to others who want them. Fabrics bought a long time ago lose their allure and the colors are outdated like shag carpeting.

lowjane 08-10-2011 03:37 PM

My only fear is that I will have to top last years gifts.. In our community plastic bags are a no no so I am making bags for my friend to take to market- and they are all lined. Hope that I don't run out of ideas!

3incollege 08-10-2011 03:40 PM

not good at throwing away anything. I even have a hard time using from my stash.

Nolee 08-10-2011 04:15 PM

I think that is a WONDERFUL Christmas idea......thank you so much for talking about it :) :) I would never have thought of it.

I'M A PACK RAT! HAVING FUN DOING SCRAP STRING QUILTS TO GIVE AWAY

twilight 08-10-2011 05:07 PM

My extra things I can't seem to part with or throw away I give to the church fro the ladys that do the bazaar. They are always glad to get ufo and extra scraps of fabric. Maybe a guild can point you in the direction of a group makeing small projects for shut insor something like that.

Have a good time going thru your stash.

ten pages...well, can't read all that now...but I love applique and I don't throw ANY fabric away.
If I seriously think I will never get around to using it, I box it and GIVE IT AWAY.
I just can't bear to think of it going in the garbage!!!
sniff...sniff...i won't be reading this thread either.
I just realized how depressing it might be, lol!

peaceandjoy 08-10-2011 05:21 PM

Well, don't tell, but this year I gave myself permission to throw away a partially finished quilt that I absolutely hated. It's true, it went in the trash. No attempt to recycle, give away, etc.

I've sent boxes of fabrics, scraps, unwanted items to a couple of people from QB. Last time was a jam packed full paper carton! Hopefully they can use them, it's worth the postage to get it out of my way.

There is also a shop in a town about 40 minutes away that accepts donations of any and all craft items, from scrapbooking to clock making. They sell the items to raise money for local senior citizens.

lovetosewstudio 08-10-2011 05:54 PM

As my sewing studio grew, my self made rules changed. First I kept every little tiny piece of fabric, then it had to be 5" to use in a mini quilt, then it had to be big enough to make a headband, now it has to be big enough to make a draw-string bag.
The studio just got too big and no room.
So unfortunately my 4 trash cans in the studio are full each day of fabric scraps, strands of thread, and empty spools.
:-(

GailG 08-10-2011 06:08 PM

I have scraps everywhere....strips in shoe boxes, squares in plastic bags, just plain scraps in many containers. When I place them aside in a ziploc, box, or other container, I sometimes have an idea what "could" be done with them, but I never do get to it. I'm not good at "random" piecing. I definitely do NOT throw them away. I suppose I should GIVE them away....but....

1Snowbird 08-10-2011 06:22 PM

Hmmm.... I am not sure what this "Throwing Away " is.... I may have to try it sometime. :)

I am NEVER,...repeat, NEVER going to throw away!
I paid good money, or somebody did and I would 'give', but not throw away...nope, nope, nope!
That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
Those of us that have fabrics that just sit, should swap them, measure for measure, lol ;-)

#1piecemaker 08-10-2011 07:26 PM

I don't throw anything away. Ask my DH. heheeh!

oh brother, lol...we are going to drag the dh's into this???
ok, I'll put my red, shame face on now, bc I know what mine would say... :XD:

OHSue 08-10-2011 08:16 PM

I am good at purging stuff when it gets a bit old, but I usually pass it onto a friend so that I don't feel guilty. I told her I don't care if you throw it away, but I can't do it.

kaykwilts 08-11-2011 03:25 AM

um....not very good!!

aeble 08-11-2011 09:58 AM

I not only keep the scraps, but the "thread garbage" too.

Oh, DEAR! That freaks me out. Of course, I have some of those deep in the closet.....but, throw away. Bite your tongue!

 Some charitable group would have finished it for the homeless. They don't mind the construction or the design. All they want is the warmth.

I'm not scolding. I am just amazed that you had the courage to throw it away. I'll bet my DH would love to see me with so much gumption.

mojo11 08-11-2011 06:14 PM

Gave a lot to other quilting ladies.

lowjane 08-12-2011 03:24 AM

I have this long piece of scrap about 1/2 " X 6' and my hubby noticed it was tied around a tree. Wondering what the significance was he asked. I told him I was marking the tree for the tree feller to be cut down, I wanted him to make sure that was the correct tree to cut.. Yep he laughed!
Just one more use of scrap.

Gleniveve 08-12-2011 06:36 AM

I used to throw all my tiny scraps out until I read on this QB that
they are great for doggie beds for the RSPCA. I hadn't heard of this before so rang them here in Brisbane, Australia and was told that the dogs just love them. Since then all my tiny pieces of cotton material go into a bag especially for the animals. This has made such a difference to me - I will even bend down to pick up a dropped scrap off the floor for the doggies. Apparently the animals that have been found or handed in for adoption feel that these are just for them and get very attached to them. I usually make the bag the size of a pillowslip and leave one end open until the bag is filled to snuggle size for the new occupant.
My machines are all industrial so I make a small hole in the underside of the bench on the left side for a screw eye to hold the bag for my scraps. Underneath on the right side I have a
bin for rubbish. This all helps to keep "stuff" off the floor and helps with cleaning up. Hope this helps someone. I get really excited about my doggie scraps being the animal lover that I am. Lol gleniveve

Greenheron 08-12-2011 02:57 PM

Gleniveve, what good ideas. I'm going to make a pillow form to hang from the side of the machine and put the scraps in directly.
My own pups love warm snugglies. My son and DDIL's three big dogs think the wool sofa pillows I appliqued for them (DS&DIL!) are dog cushions/toys.
