Seriously, how good are you about throwing away those strips, orphan blocks, scraps, crumbs, etc? I usually carefully put everything in bins and about once a year decide to try to use some of it up. Right now I am making those mug rugs and I can't tell if my stash is getting smaller. About now I feel like the guy who tries to finish the internet...it just isn't going to happen! So...do you throw this stuff away, do you keep it until you use, do you close the door & don't worry about using it?

sueisallaboutquilts 08-09-2011 01:52 PM

I got really brave this year and got rid of lots of stuff. That's not like me at all but I just couldn't stand the disaster in my sewing room.
I kept only what I love and I'm a lot happier. I don't miss one thing I gave away!

AlwaysQuilting 08-09-2011 01:53 PM

I throw away alot. I just don't have the room to keep every little thing nor do I have the time to sort through it now and then to find just the right piece for a project.

ptquilts 08-09-2011 01:53 PM

AAARRGGGHHH - you said the "T" word!! Never throw anything out!!!

PaperPrincess 08-09-2011 01:54 PM

I throw it in a box and when it's full I give it to someone else. If you check the classified section here, you can mail it to someone who will pay for postage, or do a PIF. One quilter's scraps are another quilter's treasure!!!!

Chele 08-09-2011 01:55 PM

I could be better. Is there an APP for that?!

pattypurple 08-09-2011 01:55 PM

From the looks of my sewing room, I must never throw things away. I just keep moving everything from one place to another when in straighten up the room. I've tried taking somethings to our local charity resale shop for craft goods, but I take in one box and come out with two.
I think when you try to use up your scraps they just expand when exposed to light as you dig through the containers.

snipforfun 08-09-2011 01:56 PM

I met a woman that weaves rag rugs and she is thrilled to get my strips or fabric that she can cut into strips. This way I dont feel Im throwing away, just passing it on.

CoyoteQuilts 08-09-2011 01:56 PM

I pass some stuff on to charity.

butterflies5518 08-09-2011 01:56 PM

I am saving for a PIF soon. Could be exactly what some else is searching for and only needs a small scrap.

coloradosky 08-09-2011 01:57 PM

I must confess, I hold onto every little scrap piece. I do mostly machine applique so I do use many small pieces. I also keep all my cut off salvages because someday I might just need them. I'm terrible when it comes to throwing away anything that I might find useful some time in the future and then I can't find it!

jpmaroni 08-09-2011 01:57 PM

I give all my scraps to the young ladies that I mentor once a week during the school year. The love to cut into squares and make nine patches. Now I have the classified here to continue to give them away....

luvTooQuilt 08-09-2011 01:57 PM

You could always send them to me!!!!! I love scrappy quilts..

I use them all, cut them to the shape I need and pass on the ones i wont use..

   if anyone wants to get rid of anything less than a fq but bigger than 1x1 i would gladly put them to good use..

jmabby 08-09-2011 01:58 PM

I only keep things that are even strips or squares, no scraps

dakotamaid 08-09-2011 02:00 PM

I give mine to a friend who does miniature quilts. She loves me!!:)

I'll split the postage with you, and split the scraps! I love doing appliqué.... Lol

this is my way too
I do sell off some fabric yardage that I know I'll never use.
I wouldn't think of parting with my scraps - I love my scraps - can spend hours cutting scraps into 1 1/2", 2", 2 1/2" and 3" squares - carefully placed in labeled boxes, perhaps never to be seen again.

Rose L 08-09-2011 02:03 PM

I'm a keeper

BellaBoo 08-09-2011 02:07 PM

I take all my tired of it scraps to the community quilt class I teach and the members there take them. Orphan blocks are made into potholders for me. When a potholder gets dirty I toss it, that's easy for me to do. I just think less laundry.

ube quilting 08-09-2011 02:14 PM

I keep throwing stuff at my trash can but it just can't catch it!
peace

Jennifer22206 08-09-2011 02:21 PM

I use anything larger than about 1x1. I do tons of miniatures and use it. For orphan blocks I put them into totebags. If anyone has orphan blocks that they don't want - I'll be glad for them!

Granny Quilter 08-09-2011 02:32 PM

If you can't use it, give it to someone else. My friend does only rag quilts, and gives me scraps. I told her not to throw anything 2" square or larger away. She gives me leftover blocks, and even some pieces 1 yard long. I am using them happily. There are probably other quilters who would love to have some fabric help.

loves_2_quilt 08-09-2011 02:43 PM

Not very good  but I am trying to make quilts from my scraps this year.

I believe you are right when you said they expand to light ,I had A bunch of strips stuff in A LITTLE cardboard box and dumped them in plastic tub so I could get to them better for the string quilt and it filled the plastic tub. Got almost 2 quilt tops done and u can't see where i used any of them. I don't throw much away what don't go in to quilts go in to flannel bags for animal beds.

bjeriann 08-09-2011 03:16 PM

I've given a few boxes to some quilters here on the QB, but mostly take to the thrift store. I sent a large box (about 15 yds)to someone a while back - stating up front "I have a smoker in the house" I got a nasty note back complaining about the smell. She didn't feel she should have had to wash the stuff. Well it was free and I paid for the shipping too. So I just give to the thift store.

MadQuilter 08-09-2011 03:20 PM

I toss the odd little bits that aren't big enough to do anything with OR if I have tons of the fabric, I may be a little more generous with tossing. Every other bit goes in the scrap bin.

bearisgray 08-09-2011 03:22 PM

I prefer to pass anything usable on to throwing it away - now if I can just find some suckers - um, I mean takers -

VickyS 08-09-2011 03:23 PM

Our local garbage has indicated material must be thrown in trash, not recyclables, which means it goes to the dump and gets stuck in the ground to degrade over the next 100 years or so.

A local group got together and asked all seamstresses and companies still making things with material to donate anything they were paying to throw in the garbage. It resulted in some really good giveaways every month, and has kept a bunch of us happy with free fabric.

Please don't dump those odds and ends in the trash! Use them as stuffing if you are not going to need them and can't give them away. IMHO Thank you!

Xstitshmom 08-09-2011 03:29 PM

Depends on the size. The tiny stuff I pitch, the other goes into my "scrap" bucket.

KwiltyKahy 08-09-2011 03:53 PM

I'm a keeper too. And now I have started saving the tiniest pieces to use for stuffing for the local animal shelter.

Dolphyngyrl 08-09-2011 03:55 PM

I'll give you 2 words pack rat

KwiltyKahy 08-09-2011 03:57 PM

i confess.

I don't throw out anything that can be used for anything. Everything I get rid of goes to Goodwill or Salvation Army. I may not want it but, maybe someone else will be thrilled to get it.

pocoellie 08-09-2011 04:03 PM

I'm NOT good, I keep practically every little bit of scrap and thread. LOL One of these days I'll use them.

JanTx 08-09-2011 04:06 PM

A while back there was a thread on here similar to this and someone posted about her church group using scraps to make charity quilts. Does this describe any of you?

luvstoquilt301 08-09-2011 04:12 PM

I save all the small stuff I do NOT want for our guilds once a year yard sale. I save them in see through containers and they sell very fast.

I am way too much stash to be making stuff from scraps.

no1jan 08-09-2011 04:23 PM

I can't throw anything away. I belong to a guild and whatever I can't use I give to them to sell at their "boutique". That way they can make money for charities!

I also pick up things at garage sales and on Craigslist and Freecycle for them. What is someone's trash is truly someone else's treasure!

I even managed to pick up small scraps of a fabric my SIL needed to finish a queen size yo-yo quilt. She had enough to make 10 but only needed 8.

JeannieT 08-09-2011 04:36 PM

I can't throw away any scraps!! I do a lot of appliques and also sell appliques so I keep it all. I only get rid of scraps if i feel like I'm using the same fabrics over and over, then I box them up and sell them on Craigslist. Someone is always looking for fabric scraps. Then I start all over again filling up my scrap carts!

I'm terrible at throwing away anything I think I can use to sew with..which is why my room is such a disaster. For the first time ever I have one dedicated sewing room and not all my junk fits. I thought I was going to have 2 rooms and did for a few months...but the girlie kid needed it..so..I have a bigger mess than what I started with..I am determined to get it under control though before I start mega sewing for Christmas. =) Wish me luck.. !

KwiltyKahy 08-09-2011 04:46 PM

I wish you luck. Let me know how you do it. Your room can't be as bad as mine.
