I get lots of scraps from my sewing projects. I sew hats for the operating room girls. We have to wear the same clothes everyday, and the same clothes as everyone else. So our hats and socks are the only things that make us individualistic. So I created a pattern and sew hats. Even now that I'm not in the OR (I'm in the ER now at a very small hospital), I still sew hats for the girls at a larger hospital in the closest hospital to us, about 80 miles away. I charge $1 to cover the cost of elastic, but get about a fat quarter of fabric left over, which is a huge bonus to me. I have sewn literally hundreds of hats, so I have a great assortment of far quarters!!

These are two of my friends that I've sewn their hats. Kinda cute, huh!

Here are the fat quarter scraps that I sewed just this week. I never get to pick the fabric choices, but it usually rounds out to a bunch of fun ones.

This one is me, about 3 years ago. Wearing my own hat, of course. I worked in Wyoming then.

PM me your mailing address, and I"ll draw you a copy and mail it.

sewnsewer2 07-23-2008 07:00 PM

What a great idea! It makes it a little easier for the patient if the staff is wearing something colorful and whimsy.

You do a fantastic job and I'm sure everyone appreciates it! Keep it up!

Grandma Cindy 07-23-2008 07:35 PM

Sara - do you have a pattern for the guys as well / I am a nurse in ICU but I was trying to find a pattern for a guy in SPD who wears them daily. Do you have the customers provide you with the fat quarters/yardage, if so what a great way to build up a stash. Do the girls at the larger hospital mail you the fabric since they are so far away? At my hospital, all the RN's have to wear navy blue or white - boring ! The "higher" ups think it looks professional, oh well, I love nursing and I do get a paycheck. Would you mind sharing the girls pattern? I could mail you the fabric for the first one and have that as a sample for me as well... Thank you,Cindy

jbsstrawberry 07-23-2008 09:41 PM

What a fantastic idea!!! You absolutely ROCK...those have to give the patients happy feelings too!!

SaraSewing 07-24-2008 01:03 AM

I have the girls buy 5/8th of yard - I need that much length for the full hat. Their choice. Then a nurse friend works in the other hospital and he drives over each week, so he is my currier. There are a few pieces that I thought were ugly, but most are wonderful.

No, I don't sew boy hats. I got a pattern from my anesthesia friend, bought him the fabric, and all ready to sew it, and he was killed in a plane crash that week, and I've never felt much like sewing them since then. All I would suggest is getting either a hat that the reps leave, or a paper hat, and make a pattern from that.

Quilt4u 07-24-2008 01:09 AM

Great job.

Belinda 07-24-2008 01:43 AM

reneebobby 07-24-2008 02:14 AM

Tigerbaby1981 07-24-2008 03:52 AM

Bevanger 07-24-2008 05:49 AM

what an awesome idea........ you go girl

Grandma Cindy 07-24-2008 06:53 AM

I apologize for bringing up that memory of yours.

How many health field workers do we have on this board?
I started as an LPN in 1976, went back to school and have been a RN since 1984. I still have an 18 year old at home so I do not see retiring any time soon. Then again how would I be able to afford my fabric if I did not work, LLOOLll

Skeat 07-24-2008 06:56 AM

What a wonderful way of leaving your thumbprint in the world!! And, to bring a positive motivation and lift to work! Skeat

i just have to add my 2 cents worth - thank God that we have such wonderful nurses and doctors. I just had major surgery 3 weeks ago. I had "aorto bi-femoral bypass". i had blockage in my iliac arteries on both sides, the vascular surgeons cut me down the middle from breast bone to pubic bone, then 2 more incisions one on either side of that big one to join the graft below the iliac arteries with the top end joined to the aorta where it comes out of the diaphram. i had the best nurses, orderlies, male nurses etc etc in the world, thank God for all of you and all of them.

Susan in Texas 07-24-2008 09:27 PM

Knot Sew 05-03-2009 08:04 AM

Sara, you should set up as a small home business and sell the hats and the pattern on etsy or ebay...you have a special talent and flair...how about chemo hats

Pats8e8 05-03-2009 08:13 AM

Those hats are great, I make ones for my son who is in eye surgery, he has asked me about doing some for the women at his office, but I had no idea what to do for them. Would I be able to get a copy of your pattern too? I'd be glad to pay you for it. I'll PM you also. Thanks.

littlehud 05-03-2009 10:43 AM

Those are so cute. My DD works in surgery and you are so right, the only thing that sets them apart is their hats and socks. She has a pattern for hats so I can start making them. She has hats for every holiday. Love it.

Ninnie 05-03-2009 10:54 AM

Ya, Ruth, like I don't have another thing to do. . . I make them for friends just to be nice and get such a nice reward with the scraps. Yes, I'll share the pattern if you PM me.
