Mine is a Viking designerII had it for years.bought it new..never had trouble with it..it is a work horse...it only has one little dislike that I found .when I use it to quilt..it doesn't like to turn and back up at the same time..but all machines have some little thing..they say no too.

I got my Janome 9000 in 1997 but didn't use it a lot until I retired in 2011. It worked fine, then in 2013 it stopped working. I took it in and it was a fuse. Got a new fuse and it worked for awhile and quit again. Installed another new fuse and it still has problems. The Janome dealer really did not want to work on it and he was not polite. It is just sitting. I have not had the heart to get rid of it because I'm hoping my husband can figure out what is wrong with it. For that age of a machine, I do not want to put $500 in it if it is a circuit board!

My Pfaff 7510 is 20 years old and still going strong. I pull her out every time I need to quilt 3 layers. The walking foot is like no other....

I got my Viking Designer 1 in 2000. Used it lots back then but then I got another embroidery machine, Babylock Ellegante cause I wanted a larger hoop and got this machine at a steal. I now use my D1 for piecing so it gets lots of use again but I find after a number of moves its starting to show its age. The computer screen has shifted downward though it doesn't show it but I can't get to the area to adjust fabric and size stitch so it will need to go in for repair. I love this machine enough to spend the $$ to have the PC screen replaced. Its a workhorse in my book. It sewed over 8 layers of blue jean fabric without hesitation.

The Babylock is at least 9 years old and I do all my embroidery on it though have used it for buttonholes since I can't get the D1 to that screen.

When I bought it I told the dealer I had worn out 3 machines in 10 years, he told me I would never wear out the viking, so far, he's right. :)

Same experience here. I do not get as much sewing time in as you do but my Designer is still going strong. Not lack of time just can't sit that long.

I have a Singer Quantum XL-3400 that I bought from Allbrands.com in 2002 and it has never needed to be serviced. Still works great.

Rennie 05-09-2015 06:35 AM

First one - a Janome 9000 - bought in 1997 and still works - DH bought me a Babylock Ellageo in 2001 (for the bigger embroidery frame) and it has gotten much use! Still works great but I am trading in for another Babylock that will download designs by USB. Most of these machines are built to last!

He said the new ones are not as good as the older ones. Don't know, this is his opinion. I do like the large bobbin the new Bernina's have though!

You have only taken it in twice in 11 years? I take mine in every year. I wonder what thoughts y'all have on this. I was told it was needed but you have me thinking.

Rosyhf 05-09-2015 08:06 AM

I have the janome memory craft 8000 for 25 years now. I have used it like a work horse. I have never taken it in for service. I keep it clean and only oil the bobbin case or the thingy the bobbin sits in. The lighted screen has gone a bit dull but I can still see the stitches. I don't really do machine embroidery and use the blanket stitch on it or a couple others. It is one of the best machine I own. I do use my brother quilt club now for speed etc. (I have 2 of those) ...I have sold my old bernina and an old singer and getting ready to sell my featherweight. I want to be down to just 3 machines.

My Viking 500 is now 25 years old... not a lot of computerized "stuff", but it still runs like a champ.

I have a Husqvarna Viking 990 Model from 1986 - runs just great! It was one of the first computerized machines available on the market. Amazing what it can do.

I bought my Viking #1 plus in 1996 new, at the time it was the top-of-the-line machine for Viking. I've not a put a whole lot of hours on it, I've never had a problem. A unscrupulous Viking authorized repair store told me when I took it in to be cleaned, that the Mother board was about to go out and did I want to trade up....I couldn't afford at the time a new Mother board @ $500 plus labor. DH did a thorough cleaning and 7 years later it's still working flawlessly. (I found a new Viking dealer to deal with)

Last summer I purchased via eBay the Viking #1 which doesn't have the embroidery which I only used on my 1+ I think one time, I hated babysitting the machine and changing threads.

I took the eBay purchased machine #1 in to authorized Viking dealer/repair 2.5 hours away but his reputation is over the moon great! He deemed the eBay purchased machine pristine so I have two wonderful Vikings. The dealer/repair guy also confirmed what others have said on this thread, that the newer machines are not as well made as the older ones. He's repaired Vikings for 30 years, He went on to say there is a lot more plastic and a lot of the parts are Chinese made.

I have you beat LOL. I have a Viking 940 from 1980 and it is still working but recently the presser foot pressure wheel is not holding so it is like FMQ. I feel so bad. It was a workhorse.

quiltjoey 05-09-2015 06:41 PM

My 15 year old Viking Designer 1 is a workhorse and never any problems with it.

Have a Pfaff 7570 for about 18 years and a Babylock Elissimo for 7 years, love both of them.

ejmhome2 05-10-2015 05:54 AM

Pfaff 1475 (I think that is the right number) and still use it after 40 plus years, I have had the presser foot become sluggish and that was a quick fix with the service, no parts. Love my Pfaff machines-7570 and CS.

Janome Memory Craft 9000

I bought my Janome in 1998 and used it like a little work hourse. The mother board on it just went which meant it was laid to rest as they do not make them any more.....i loved it ....another Janome was in order...

squires1042 05-10-2015 08:51 AM

I have two 7570's for shop machines which are both in their 20'+ as is my 2170 all are still going strong

moonwork42029 05-10-2015 09:07 AM

I got my Pfaff 1473 CD in 1990 and it's still the one I use everyday. Love the "snail" option of sewing when showing my 9 yr old granddaughter what to do. Serviced maybe 5 times in all this time...had to have the foot pedal worked on this past year. Actually only had to change the light bulb once too and I leave it one by the hours on end.

I was told to never ever ever get rid of this machine as it was one of the last ones built in Germany and is heavy duty in addition to being computerized. This one has one of the first "plotters" so you could design your own layouts to use fancy stitches with which was a real advancement back in the day.

GailG 05-11-2015 03:09 AM

I purchased my Janome MC4000 in March of 1997. It was a floor model used for demo. The only time I've brought it in to the shop has been for cleaning and a couple of times for a "scare"...it was misbehaving. On one occasion, it was an operator mistake (needle inserted wrong ////blush////). The other time was when I machine quilted a quilt with high loft batting and had pulled the thickness along. I don't know the technical terms but my repairman made adjustments and I was on my way.

Lately I've noticed that there is a little tension problem that appears with certain threads. Haven't had that problem before. I use whatever threads I have in my leftovers. Newer threads seem to be "less substantial" than the older threads and I actually prefer them. I think I will "invest" in some of the threads that have been discussed on this board to see if I'll get better performance out my old baby.

My Bernina is 11 years old and still going. Before that I had a Singer that lasted 26 years. Very fortunate.

costumegirl 05-11-2015 11:20 AM

I have a Bernina 1630 and she is my best machine - going strong for 20 years since 1995. I love this machine - it does everything!

JustOneMoreYard 05-11-2015 12:14 PM

Ok, you asked.. so here goes.

Started with a Viking 1+ and then I bought a Rose, both were doing fine with I traded or sold them after 5 years so that I could upgrade to a larger embroider area. Bought a used Designer 1 and had nothing but problems with it, so I bought a used Brother Disney machine and the computer portion just quit after 3 years. To expensive to replace so I bought a NEW Brother ULT Embroidery machine. After 4 years, the mother board cracked and instead of just replacing it, I traded it in on my Brother Quilt Club 1000 and I have had that one for a long time now. When the others gave out, I was teaching embroidery, so the machines were going and going and going... I also have a Brother Cs1000i, their entry level computerized machine and it is a work horse. Weighs 9 pounds and has traveled with me on air plains and hasn't give me any issues in about 15 years.

Here is what I think the issue is, its not how old the machine is, it is how much does it get used. Mine failed because of the amount of use I gave them, on the other hand, my Quilt Club is a "sewing" machine only and doesn't do embroidery, their TOL machine at the time with all the bells and whistles, and she still purrs like a kitten.

The more they put on them, the more there is to fail.....

CMARAS1234 05-11-2015 03:44 PM
