Assuming you already have the fabric and it's a pretty traditional pattern, and you quilt it yourself as opposed to sending it out - how long does it take you, start to finish, to complete a quilt. Let's say twin sized :)
I keep reading that some of you are doing what appears to be several a week! It takes me at least 2 months to finish a quilt. Do some of you work all day on your quilting? (I can't, my back/neck/shoulders would kill me! And dh would feel rather neglected if I did :) ) |
It totally depends on the pattern. I have a couple of patterns that are really easy and I have made several. In November I made 11 quilts in 21 days. 7 of these were baby size, basically Quilts for Kids pattern. 5 of them were lap size,(warm wishes pattern) one slightly larger than the others. The larger ones just had basically stitch in the ditch with a wavy stitch and I FMQ's the 7 little ones.
I have whipped up a lap size in 3 days. Others take me longer. |
I see some people here whip out quilts like I whip out casseroles. Not me.
One reason is that I don't make too many large block quilts, I like small pieces and complication. Another reason is that I don't sew every day. I may go several days or even weeks without entering the sewing room. Lastly is that I am slow, I take my time in every step from choosing fabric all the way through binding. I contemplate each step and then go. I also don't smoke, drink or eat in my sewing room so I take breaks. Those are my excuses and I'm sticking to them :) |
Even a twin sized can take a while, depending on how intriquite the blocks are and the quilting too...
It also depends on how much time you can devote to sewing each day :D:D:D |
it depends on so many things.
i've made a twin size quilt in 2 weeks and i had another that was all hand appliqued and hand quilted that took 12 months. |
Depends on the pattern. Most quilts I can quilt in less than a week. I dont work, sew as much as I like. I quilt till I start "feeling" it. Then clean, do some canning, bake. And then back to the sewing. Piecing a quilt can be done in about a week. If your just sewing squares together, that can be done in an afternoon. When I worked it would take about 2 months for me to get a quilt done start to finish.
I have made one in a few days, I could do about a double to queen in 2-3 weeks. i went back to work and now it takes me longer, spend too much time on computer.
Got to go with "depends on the quilt". I have "whipped a baby quilt" out in a week--(given that I was home and willing to sew for that week!) but taken months or other more detailed patterns.
Depends on how soon I need it done! I did a pretty simple one with MQ in 1 week recently
Sometimes forever and sometimes a day! Doesn't really help does it but it just depends on so many things ;)
There are to many variables for anyone to say exactly how long it will take to make a quilt. I am a pretty fast peicer and quilter.....but if I have to do binding it could take year...LOL finish. That's why I have started sending my bindings out. I just like to have them finished.
For me it depends as well.
I have done a baby quilt in 13 hours over 3 days. Right now it has almost taken me 2 months to get a 90x100 quilt done with most if the work being done this last month and I have been working 2-3 hours a day on it. Then other times it has taken me 2 years to get a baby quilt done :D  |
I have finish one in about a year.. Machine pieced, hand quilted, I have finished some in about 6 weeks, machined pieced and quilted. and then again, I have one in the closet, I bought after the blizard in 1993 that I am still looking for a snow day to finish. (I am about 2/3 finished.) but then again. I work and have other projects always going. It really depends on the quilt and if it is a gift or for me.
Don't worry, it takes me a while to finish quilts too. Mostly because I can't work on one quilt at a time! But the one quilt I worked on start to finish because it was just large rectangles, 6 1/2 by 9 1/2 and no borders, it took me 4 days? But that was just because it was large rectangles. My other quilts can take anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months. Sometimes I hand quilt, sometimes I machine quilt, and sometimes, I just tie them. And I can only quilt for a few hours at a time or my back kills me too!
Really depends on the quilt. Most of the ones I've done are finished within a week to a month. My latest (and largest *a king*) has taken 3 months so far and will hopefully be done by this weekend.
It all depends on how long it is from when I start to when it needs to be done. It can be anywhere from a few days to several years!
I did a lapquilt in a day - simple random squares and SID on my sewing maching. My current project I started on May 12 and am still going strong. It's a queen sized strip pieced star, with animal silhouttes in each corner, quarter inch outlines of the diamonds, various symbols on the various borders... I ran away from home last week and quilted for three solid days. But I'm having a garage sale this weekend so haven't touched it since last Saturday. It goes like that :) I work full time, teach at church, and have 2 teenaged daughter at home, so I don't get nearly as much quality time with the needle and thread as I'd like. My dad takes the girls out every Thursday night for their quality time, so I do get at least 3 hours a week :)
Uh....I have a couple that took over 10 years, LOL!
And, then again, a few I've done in a week or two, but that's rare. I tend to quilt/sew in fits and starts. :? Jan in VA |

totally depends on the quilt and my state of mind at the time- anywhere from a weekend to 10 years!
i have made a twin quilt on a saturday- quilted on sunday- i have started a quilt on saturday---and 4-5 years later---have half of it together--- it's all relative- every quilt is different most of the time if i really put my mind to it- twins go together pretty fast- and since i have a long arm- twins can usually be quilted in a 2-3 hours but i have to apply myself |
The longest one (queen size) took me 2 yrs. I lost interest and quit working on it for a while.
The quickest I've made took a month. |
It really depends. Anywhere from 3 or 4 days to a month. I do all my bindings by machine, so that speeds things up.
Depends on pattern and size...But a twin and I usually love to do applique by machine I can whip it up in 3 days...I do SID...I work in the winter 9-4, summer 9-noon 5 days a wk, take off wkends.

SOMETIME A WEEK SOMETIME MONTHS DEPENDS ON THE PATTERN AND I ONLY HAND PIECE AND HAND QUILT
I hand quilted a full sized top that someone asked me to in about a month. But I had one on my quilting frame for several years once because I got sick of working on it. If I had ppl like the ones on here I would have known to go on to other projects instead of trying to force myself to work on that one.

I had three weeks off and did the first one in a month (just the top). The second one took about three weeks to piece (I hate piecing) and two hours to applique. Then back to piecing +sigh+.
I think a twin quilt was my record, pieced from 3" squares with a border, quilted by machine, bound by machine. Took 3 days. A log cabin can be pieced in two days, my broken dishes took 3 months.
A queen size now ( I'm retired) takes me about 1 year from start to finish as I hand quilt it . It took me about 2 years before when I was working because I didn't have the time to work on my projects.
Applique --- Love your quilts.
There are so many things to take in consideration of making a quilt. It depends on the time you have to dedicate. I have a day job so I don't have all day to quilt. I like patterns I can finish in 4-5 days, that includes picking out fabric, cutting, piecing, quilting and binding. I get bored quickly so I don't enjoy doing long projects.

DITTO!! Thank you sooo much for posting this message. I too take months to finish one quilt. Though I could be cutting a lap quilt or baby quilt in between working on a queen to break up the monotony of the actual quilting process. |
Machine pieced and quilted baby and/or charity quilts can take a few days. Mostly I hand quilt so a king-size Lone Star quilt took me a year to quilt working fairly steadily. Queen size hand applique, hand quilt took 2 years. The lady who took "Best of Show" in a large area quilt show had a hand applique, hand quilt queen size that took her 10 years.
Depends on how much extra time I can squeeze out of my work day for me.

my motto to live by is "Quilting forever, housework whenever" so I can get a quilt done in about a month. If it's a really intricate patter (PPing, etc.) it takes a little longer.
I tend to work on more than one at a time. Sometimes I'll finish the top then move straight on to quilting.. usually I finish a couple tops then quilt them. So I finish more than one quilt in a week, but I've usually been bouncing around between them for weeks or months.
It takes me months to finish a quilt. I work full time so I can only sew in the evenings and on the weekends. Also during the summer there are other things to do. I am not a fast quilter.
My time increments are also in months. The longest was 4 months, shortest was 1. I'm retired, but have so many other things going on, I don't have lots of time to sew. I shoot for about 1 hour/day.
Like others have said, it depends on the pattern. I can make one in 3 days, but then if it is appliqued, it takes me a lot longer because I get bored.
For me, it really depends on the quilt and my motivation. I have been able to get a baby quilt done in a day, even quilting! Others take me longer. The black and white in my avatar, between piecing and quilting took me the better part of 6 months! But that was the most involved one I have ever undertaken.
