how to make a quilt grow????

Hi everyone. Here I am lurking again and I just know one of you lovely ladies will have an answer to my dilemma. I made a quilt for my niece's daughter 2 years ago. It is a single bed size. However with a change of house and larger rooms mum has updated to a King single and wonders if I can extend her quilt to still be useful. My first thought was to add a ruffle behind the biinding but extending down perhaps another 6 -8 inches. Do you think this would work or is there a better was, hopefully without removing the binding as my time is limited caring for an aged father. Hopefully I will enclose a photo of said quilt.

a ruffle would work- or you could do a *quilt as you go* border- attaching with sashing strips - either way is do=able...good luck & looking forward to the pictures.

I made a quilt for our bed and it wasn't wide enough so I pieced a 'strip' about 12 inches wide for each side, quilted it to match the quilt, bound it on the bottom and ends then, without removing the binding of the original quilt I added it to the side of the quilt, sewing in the ditch of the original binding. It worked great and looks great as well! (Is this clear as mud?)

Maybe your niece could buy a coordinated solid color bedspread to lie under it. The twin sized quilt could lie on top of that? I seem to remember someone making that suggestion on another thread. I have no idea if it would work.

Too obvious, that I didn't think to mention this .... I do that with my Christmas lap quilt .... I flip one of my full bed quilts over to the back, and then put the lap on top. It pretty much fits the top of the bed. I get to enjoy the lap more than if it were in the family room folded up or draped over the couch .... and if I want to "use" it, it's only a few steps away to retrieve. A perfect way to --s-t-r-e-t-c-h-- a quilt out! (and to minimize the costs for a new look!

Suggest that the twin size quilt will now be perfect for using as a couch quilt.

Some people seem to have no idea of what is involved in a request like that.

Thanks for your ideas. I am tossing up between the QASG extension or the ruffle. It always helps to have a few ideas tossed about. I probably wouldn't go to the trouble but a beautiful great niece is pretty special . I have pleasure in making her and her mother happy. Thanks again !

I would suggest that she get a solid coloured quilt for the bed and use the twin as a bed runner. Would look neat and save a lot of work for you. ANd the child still has her special quilt.

It seems to me it would be easier to just make a new quilt the right size. My quilts are not made in a way that it would be easy to take apart. And I don't like "kluging", so I would just make a new quilt.
