Need? Less than ten "good" books -

After that, many of them are very repetitious.

It does depend on one's experience level and how imaginative/creative one is.

I have about 6 books that I consider my "GO TO" books. Then I have 3 or 4 more books that I use for inspiration.

As for magazines - I started taking the articles or projects out of the magazines by scanning them into PDFs. I have the PDFs categorized like "Quilts", "Hints", "How Tos" and then I make the name explain the PDF. Then I donate the magazines. It cut down a lot on the space I needed to maintain them! PLUS it is easier to find what I want.

I think the REAL question is:.... How many can you get your hands on?!!

There will never be enough! I started subscribing to a few as a new quilter years ago in Vanuatu where we didn't have access to anything related to quilting, and taught myself (other than a basic week-end course I took 10 years before). Before I knew it, I subscribed to at least 5 and everytime I went on vacation, I bought a different magazine and ususally got home and subscribed to it too. Now, I have 8 subscriptions, and a shelf full of various quilting books I just HAD to have. I can't stand to part with them, and periodically thumb thru them for inspiration or a new pattern. It is amazing how my tastes have changed over the years-quilts I tagged to make, I really don't care for, and ones I didn't give a second glance to, I now really like.
