how many quilt all of their quilts? I bought a Mega quilter several years ago, was never able to quilt with it, I got so frustrated with it, I sold it. Do most of you have long arm quilting machines or quilt with your regular machines?

kateyb 12-26-2010 08:14 AM

I free motion quilt with my regular machine. I have even done a king size quilt this way.

You are my hero to be able to do this.

quilterken 12-26-2010 08:19 AM

I quilt most of my quilts at home on my Brother 4500.

cjomomma 12-26-2010 08:25 AM

I quilt my own on my brother that only has a 6in. arm. I did an over sized king on it last week but it was just straight fancy stitches. If I could afford a long arm with a frame I would buy it in a heart beat.

I have a Mega Quilter but haven't used it. Owned it for 3 or 4 years. I prefer QAYG or Fun and Done. However, I'm going to have to learn to use it. I have 30 or so quilt top waiting to be quilted. They're past the QAYG or F&D stage so .....

I envy all of you. I have tried quilting on my regular machine but my quilting doesn't look smooth & even stitches. any advise?

bj 12-26-2010 08:29 AM

I do most of mine on my regular machine, but I don't know how to do anything too fancy. I have a friend who longarms the larger ones for me, unless it's going to be a simple stitch in the ditch. That I can manage (O:

maine ladybug 12-26-2010 08:37 AM

I quilt all my own quilts on my regular machine. Everything from mini's to King size.

Ditto

Tinabodina 12-26-2010 08:46 AM

Any thing over a full size, I send to the long arm. I free motion the rest.

liminanc 12-26-2010 08:46 AM

I hand quilt everything, have never tried machine quilting, I have a kenmore. I would like to take a class to machine quilt. The biggest quilts I make are twin size.

Gina_D 12-26-2010 08:48 AM

I'm too cheap (poor!) to pay someone to quilt for me - I do all my quilts on a Brother innovis 1200. The more I quilt, the easier it gets. Practice makes perfect (perfect enough for me that is!) You just have to do it enough that it feels 'comfortable'. Find a design that you can deal with (meandering, waves, whatever) & practice practice practice. It doesn't have to be perfect; small mistakes get lost & are not noticeable. And fabric choice (like for your backing) is something to think about too - a busy fabric will hide a lot...invisible thread helps too.

KGoodhand 12-26-2010 08:49 AM

I have only made a few twin size quilts. I have quilted them all either by hand or on my Kenmore. This Christmas I did send the one for my in laws to the LQS and it turned out beautiful!

SherriB 12-26-2010 08:56 AM

I quilt most of mine on my Janome, but just do straight lines or stitch in the ditch. It is just a regular type machine. I have sent a couple special quilts to a longarmer. I have a Singer 301A that I am going to try to do FMQ now that I am no longer rushing to get gifts done. Santa gave me a darning foot and 1/4 in foot for it.

PurplePassion 12-26-2010 09:03 AM

I quilt them myself on my Janome 6500. I have done a Kingsize on it , but prefer to stay with a bit smaller ones. I had sent out one of my quilts to a LA'er ; but was so dissappointed in it being stiff as a board ; that I won't trust anyone else with them again.

same here - I have done several queen and king on mine.

luvspaper 12-26-2010 09:05 AM

I FMQ with my domestic machine. I hope in the next few years to upgrade my machine to get a larger area in the throat...but for now, what I have works because I have gotten used to using it.

With FMQ, it just takes practice....practice...and more practice.

How in the world did you get all that fabric through your machine. I really would like to know. I have tried and I was a failure. Please give me some tips.

cherylynne 12-26-2010 09:24 AM

I do runners on my sewing machine and then I rent time on a long arm at the LQS for all of my quilts.

kreinhart742 12-26-2010 09:25 AM

I do both depending on the size, I use my viking quilt designer edition machine to quilt small wallhangins. then I have a handiquilter that I quilt larger items on. I am though looking for a nice table for my handiquilter that is affordable.

scoobertina 12-26-2010 09:26 AM

I haven't quilted anything yet except my avatar and I am doing that one by hand. Because I am a mechanic thought I have to wait until the oils in my hands are gone before I can touch the quilt.. I haven't attempted any of my other quilts on machine yet, but I plan to

ann clare 12-26-2010 09:27 AM

I quilt all my quilts. Most of them are hand quilted. I do SID and a little FMQ on the rest.

patchsamkim 12-26-2010 09:29 AM

I will quilt up to a full size quilt by myself...I have made 3 larger quilts that I have paid someone to quilt...but it is really expensive and out of my budget now...so if I ever make another quilt so large, I will have to figure out a way to quilt it myself. Not to say that it isn't worth it, as it is, and all 3 were beautifully quilted...one was a wedding gift...but, at this time in my life, I just can't afford to pay someone $200 to quilt one for me.

I do FMQ on my regular machine, Pfaff 2134. I got started by reading all of Leah's information. She has lots of very helpful information. Here's a link http://daystyledesigns.com/articles.htm#machinequilting
Keep practicing and have fun. You can do it.!

barbsmith 12-26-2010 09:50 AM

I quilt all of my quilts by hand. I don't get nearly as many made as most of you on here, but I enjoy handquilting.

Juliebelle 12-26-2010 09:51 AM

I quilt on my Janome have not tried anything bigger then a full size, so that will be a new challenge in 2011

Joeysnana 12-26-2010 09:59 AM

I am just learning to machine quilt. So far, I have SID runners and placemats. Anything larger is sent out to be longarmed!

Cyn 12-26-2010 10:16 AM

I hand quilt mine but it takes a while to get them done!

lou walker 12-26-2010 10:24 AM

I know what you mean I quilt all of my quilts so far by hand but plan to try something different 2011

suezquilts 12-26-2010 10:43 AM

For many years I used several Longarm quilters in the area, was able purchase a Gammill after my mom passed away, then updating to a Statler 5 yrs later.

I have a friend who purchase a Viking with a table of sorts, but she is unable to quilt even with a Q Bot in the 4 or so inch area she has to work in.

I make around 10 full-king size quilts a year, so that is one reason I purchased a longarm, and my mom really wanted my sister and I to have one.

I have even tied a couple with my LA table... two double knit quilts.

If you have heard of the Flynn system, I have hand quilted with that also. It works great.

LivelyLady 12-26-2010 10:51 AM

I do FMQ on my regular machine and have quilted king size quilts on it.

Fabaddict 12-26-2010 02:13 PM

I have a fun quilter and quilt all of my quilts. I figure with just the quilts I make for Linus my machine has been paid for. LOL

Dreaming 12-26-2010 03:06 PM

I don't have the talent to machine quilt and/or the patience. I have someone with a longarm do mine. Unfortunately, I can't afford to right now, or actually for a long time now. It can be quite expensive. Maybe I should try my own machine quilting, but I just don't have the time to practice to be good. I have alot of excuses, don't I?

maryb119 12-26-2010 03:12 PM

I don't quilt all of mine but I do quilt most of them. I hand quilt. I can't explain to someone how I want it quilted and have it look the way I want it to so I do it myself. My mom is a long arm quilter. She bastes them together for me and I use my Q-Snap floor frame to quilt them.

Thumbelina 12-26-2010 03:34 PM

I have the HQ16, I'm not great by any means, but I do have fun, and I'm learning.

I FMQ with my regular machine and also SID. However I have purchased a Flynn quilting frame and plan to use it on the quilt I am doing now, an autumn leaves wall hanging, on which I will be doing mostly SID with a little free motion.

Mary L Booth 12-27-2010 03:45 AM

I have quilted every quilt I have made, and that is a lot on my sewing machine. I have a saphire vking and I love to fm on it.

Dodie 12-27-2010 03:52 AM

I quilt all of my quilts only way they seem truly mine I use my Bernina 440QE with the stitch regulator better known as BSR it would be the perfect machine if the throat space was larger but anything larger than a twin I do in sections
