I wonder what to do with my stockpile also. I give to family, surprise gifts when I just get a feeling someone needs one, and donate to different causes. With so much inexpensive soft, fleece fabric out there, it seems quilts aren't used or appreciated as much any more. Kind of sad.

I keep most of my quilts I make. I have made a quilt for each of my immediate family members. I have made quilts for new babies being born to nieces and nephews but never received any thank you or acknowledgement at all so that gifting was ended. I usually make quilts for all the seasons and display them in my house and enjoy looking at them.

When I first started quilting I made quilts for my 2 grown children and spouses and my sister and husband and one for each of my husbands siblings (four). After that I have kept all the ones I have made. I like to display them and I change them out frequently.

I started making what I call picnic quilts. They are meant lay on the ground, take washing, and wear out, so I can keep making them. None of the recipients have to feel they need to be shown off in their homes. I also make what I call floor quilts to use when babies visit and I feel my floors are not clean enough. If they like the numbers or letters, birds or puppies, they can take it home. And finally I am trying "deck quilts" for those cold but not too cold days when sitting outside warrants a warm blanket.

Love this idea. I made on "mystery" quilt with Christmas fabric , but would like to do more.

Early on in my quilting I only kept one. That was the first quilt I ever patchwork pieced. Everything else went to family and friends. That went like that for more than 20 years. Then I started quilting for myself. Now I have a dozen or so around the house for us or for when we have guest. With the pandemic I have been quilting like a mad woman. I am not sure how many I will keep. I know one is now on my bed because DH claimed it while I was making it. I have been doing some swaps right now that will yield me a 3rd quilt to put together. I have another 8 tops finished and one ready for a binding. They may all end up holiday gifts. I haven't decided yet. One thing I know is there are quilts everywhere in this house and I love it.

after making over 500 quilts, I have about 25 quilts at home, some full size for the beds and some wall quilts, and sofa quilts to snuggle up with on chilly days. family friends were all gifted with more quilts than they wanted ,and made several raffle quilts

The real answer is not enough! I realized a number of years ago that while I was busy quilting away, all my own quilts were falling apart and I wasn't on the list!!

I decided that I too was quilt worthy. Why not me? My eventual goal will be to have a themed top per month so 12 plus the "use" quilts. So far January has fabrics collected and planned, February is complete, March top is made but not quilted, April ditto, May is complete. June top done/not quilted. July complete. August is a long time work in progress... September top done/not quilted. October complete (and on the bed). November top done/not quilted. December, although I do have a completed top I decided I need better, so fabrics collected.

You are so right Karamarie, it's odd how some people appreciate them and other don't. I gave a quilt to one person who didn't appreciate it until I mentioned at a later date that I can't make a quilt under about $200.00. Another time, I was going to gift an old high school friend a quilt and before the end of our lunch she asked, What can I do with a bunch of old quilts? She had a closet full from her mother in law who had passed.

made me think that with all my quilts we both reach for a fleecy throw to snuggle with. I use all cotton fabric and batting and don’t quilt densely but we still prefer the other.
