How Many Quilts Do You Make?

I have been quilting three years. I have made four quilts since November 1. My daughter thinks it's a lot. I don't think it is. What is your average?

Teeler 03-08-2013 11:07 AM

New quilter here averaging one (top) a month since January...I expect to finish the first two this month, and I have one WIP going.

Tartan 03-08-2013 11:10 AM

I average about 4 good sized quilts a year with lots of little projects in between that interest me. Quilting is my creative outlet, gives me joy and keeps me sane. Much cheaper than therapy!:D

katier825 03-08-2013 11:10 AM

Too many, according to my hubby! Dozens in the past few years I guess. Lots of baby quilts, lots of quilts for gifts and a few for me. ;) I tend to make easy patterns with busy fabrics so they look more difficult than they are. After I get caught up on the ones I've got going, I'd like to make fewer, but try some more complex patterns, such as NY Beauty or other fancy paper pieced quilts.

WTxRed 03-08-2013 11:23 AM

I made 19 my first year (which was last year), 4 of those were super queen size - the others were lap/throw.
I've made 2 this year (one is my first paper pieced), have 2 more 80+% done.
Saying this, I do have my quilts LAQ'ed which gives me the creative time for the tops :)
IF I didn't have to do the daily 8-5 grind, I could easily see me doing a quilt in just a few days, maybe a week at tops. I do kind of keep track of how much time I've spent on a top - the most is 62 hours, 2nd to that is 40-41 ish for the paper pieced.
It's all in perspective!!!

KalamaQuilts 03-08-2013 01:18 PM

I make complicated quilts very slowly.
If I were in a hurry I'd buy a blanket.

MadQuilter 03-08-2013 01:21 PM

It depends on the size and the complexity of your quilts but it sounds like a lot to me too. I work in spurts and I have tons of UFOs. Can't say how many I have made but probably 2 a year or so which does not include small donation quilts.

GrandmaPeggy 03-08-2013 02:22 PM

I started in 2009 and have made about 2 dozen quilts, plus many sewing projects as they caught my attention. But, last year I only made 2 of those quilts and a small shawl. I just piece the tops and send the quilts to a local quilt club buddy who has a computerized long-arm. She makes my beginner quilts beautiful! I couldn't do it without her!

Oops! I forgot to add that the 2 last year were t-shirt quilts for my grandson. They were hard, but he seemed to like them both.

Love this answer! I do a mix of easy and challenging. Usually I like to follow a challenging one with a couple of easy ones. Then I get bored and want to do something more difficult. I average 2-3 quilts a month, if I don't have anything else going on. And I like to do table toppers, tote bags and wall hangings too.

I give away at least half the quilts I make, and sell a (very) few on etsy.

JenniePenny 03-08-2013 03:07 PM

Depends on what is going on in my life. I suspect this is true of all of us.

carla m 03-08-2013 03:12 PM

i make laps and baby quilts mostly but i usually get a couple or 3 twin size in there as well and i generally make about 10 per year. i also work full time and dont get to quilt mon thru thurs due to my work schedule since i work 10 hours a day. but that also means i have a 3 day weekend every weekend which has made me more productive the last few years. hopefully they dont ever change it back but people complain about it all the time so it is definately possible.

ube quilting 03-08-2013 03:15 PM

It never stops. I always have several going at one time. I have two bed size quilts on the design board right now and just guessing at the ammount of time, I can cut and piece an average queen size quilt in a weekend. So the answer would be alot!

If my daughter asked that to me I'd tell her to go clean her room!
peace

QuiltnNan 03-08-2013 03:21 PM

when i first started, i usually did 1 med to large quilt a month. i've slowed down some :)

sak658 03-08-2013 03:43 PM

I just finished my third one this year...got 2 more to get done by July...and they are all big quilts..I only work on one project at a time though..

Silver Needle 03-08-2013 04:53 PM

Depends on what I am working on. But I tend to be a slow methodical piecer. So I finish 3 or 4 a year but don't ask about the number of UFO's sitting around.

Ruby the Quilter 03-08-2013 09:38 PM

Like many quilters it depends on what is going on in my life, what quilts I need to make for gifts, how easy or challenging the pattern is and the size. Fortunately I have a long arm so am able to do a quilt from start to finish. My goal is to complete a quilt before I start another one!

Candace 03-08-2013 11:23 PM

Probably 4 or 5 a month. I'm "early retired" so I'm lucky to have at least 4 hours a day of sewing time.

DOTTYMO 03-09-2013 12:08 AM

Oh I make as many as I gain pleasure making. This is a hobby not a race I enjoy finding new patterns but more pleasure from techniques. Start a new one when I feel I want to and work on it as long as I feel satisfied. The quilt police are not time watching or saying when to finish. Enjoy find pleasure and fulfilment from each quilt no matter how quickly it happens or how slowly.satisfaction is yours not others.

IrishgalfromNJ 03-09-2013 02:35 AM

I work full time and I make about four (lap quilt size) a year. This year it will be three.

ckcowl 03-09-2013 04:21 AM

there is no (average) in my world....sometimes i may (throw together) 2 or 3 in a week- some take me 4-5 years or more---in a pinch i can put together a quilt in a weekend if i need to- i don't do many small quilts 95% of mine are queen or king sized & i don't do easy patterns often unless it's a special request- but it still depends on the project- between the donation quilts (downey quilts for kids, the women's resource center shelter mostly) the gifts & the sales i make 15-50 quilts a year...some years are more (productive) than others- some months are busier than others...i may set a week aside to put together donation quilts & make 10 in that week- then i may not make another quilt for 2 or 3 months...i am always working on numerous quilts at one time & sometimes they are (in progress) for 3-4 months-then all of a sudden i may have 6 come together seems like all at once...then a week of quilting them & bindings...it's all an ongoing thing= with no rhyme or reason.

beckyboo1 03-09-2013 04:38 AM

I go in spurts as well but I work full time plus go to school so my time is pretty limited. Even so, I think money would keep me from making very many in a short period of time.

I don't have an average. For the most part I don't do the simple style (turning 20, yellow brick road, etc) of quilts so it takes me longer to make a quilt. Some of them I quilt myself so that also adds to how long they take.

Right now I'm working on a wall hanging series for myself. I'm about to send two wall hangings off to be quilted.

deedum 03-09-2013 05:12 AM

I would guess 4 full and 6 lap sizes and numerous baby quilts. Yesterday i was thinking i never get enough to time to quilt.

susie-susie-susie 03-09-2013 08:04 AM

I just needed to comment, It is not a race. I just finished a baby quilt for a gift for a shower that is on the 23'd of this month. It is at the long armer's right now. I should get it back on Wed. so I have plenty of time to bind it. The quilt before this one was an "Ohmigosh" quilt. It is waiting to be sandwiched and quilted. It was kind of labor intensive and I feel like I need a break. I need to do "easy" projects for awhile. Maybe I will do a couple QOV quilts. I did that last year, and it felt good. Maybe I will assemble "kits" for some of my projects on my bucket list. That way I can fondle the fabric without actually making anything. I do have about 20 UFO's that are calling my name. Oh, the indecision!!!

Depends on the quilt I am making smaller easy quilts are pretty fast and large difficult take a long time.

Sierra 03-09-2013 08:17 AM

DH and I travel a lot (especially with our g-kids) and sometimes we are asked to take care of one family while Mama is off documenting research and experiences on a tall ship (it's her "ultimate medicine"):o. I started quilting in 2000 and have just over a hundred quilts which is less than 10 a year. Not so many, but my life if full in other wonderful ways. When we are home I don't have to do cooking or cleaning because DH is retired, supportive of my quilting, and says he does the easy stuff, and I quilt.

pollyjvan9 03-09-2013 08:42 AM

I started quilting in 2006 and I am up to 250 something. Haven't added the last few I have worked on. Now this counts everything I have quilted: jackets, purses, postcards, table runners and toppers, art quilts, wall hangings, totes of all kinds, curtains, and of course, bed quilts of all sizes except king. Not all the quilts are quilted. Because they take up less room before they are sandwiched I don't usually quilt them until I am ready to give it away or sell it.

mpspeedy2 03-09-2013 08:53 AM

I am not an ordinary quilter by this board's standards. I am retired on disability. I am also a handquilter. I am not fond of piecing so the "pieced" quilts I make are as simple as possible. I make at least 20 Linus quilts a month by several different methods. Some are a cute kids print front with a flannel back. Those are made envelope style and birthed. I then machine quilt them very basically, usually with varigated thread. I also crochet an edge around blankets made of fleace for Linus blankets or outright crochet them. I recently made a "pieced" quilt for my neighbor who is having her first child. It was a nine patch made with 14 inch blocks. I handquilted a design in the plain white blocks and machine quilted around each block, again with varigated thread. I put flannel on the back of it. It probably took me three days. One reason why I prefer hand quilting is that I can watch TV or have a conversation while working. Since the first of the year I have handquilted three "cheaters" cloth quilts that were made from fabric that looks like piecework. They are each 45" x 52". I handquilted around each printed piece so it looks like a "real" pieced quilt. I probably average about three hours a day on some kind of needlework, sewing, quilting or crocheting. I am 62 and the only other members of the household are my husband who is till working and our cat.

cwessel47 03-09-2013 08:57 AM

I started quilting in the 70's but didn't get really serious about it until the mid 80's. I am always working on a quilt. Their numbers are uncountable at this point. I only occasionally make a queen-sized and never a king. I hand quilt and that just takes too long as there are so many more yet to do. I find myself working on smaller and smaller things. I just love minis and can take them to work to quilt on during my lunch hour. Each person gets to work at their own pace - and some of us are crazier than others!

Emma S 03-09-2013 09:04 AM

Man, am I an under achiever! How can I spend so much time quilting with so little outcome? Part of it is being a better starter than a finisher. (17 UFO's) Still, to embarassed to tell you how few. Oh well, its the journey not the arrival.

yweinst 03-09-2013 10:31 AM

I average a quilt a month but so far none of them have been larger than a twin. I figure once I get into larger quilts it will be different...

happylab 03-09-2013 01:20 PM

I average 6-12 finished quilts a year. I usually have another 6-8 quilt tops I do as well. This year I have finished 3 quilts and sewn 2 quilt tops. Like many members here I enjoy the process and planning (which takes a long time for me). I like to try new techniques and patterns.

kaelynangelfoot 03-09-2013 08:20 PM

I started quilting last August. I've completed 5 quilt tops, and quilted the two smallest (a baby and a wall hanging). I also did a quilted tree skirt. There is no such thing as "too fast" or "too many" quilts, as long as you are happy with the finished result! My newest project is a large quilt for my brother. It will have over 200 four-inch square blocks when it is complete and I imagine it will take me quite a long time, although I'd like to have it done by May 31 when he graduates from boot camp.

sniktasemaj 03-10-2013 04:36 AM

I've never counted, but I like to take my time and make something nice, I am in no hurry, except at church outreach where I only sew on Tues. mornings.

nanna-up-north 03-10-2013 04:55 AM

I don't have a regular quota. .... sometimes I'll make a quilt in a week...... sometimes it takes me a year or more to make a quilt. It really depends on the complexity of the quilt and my desire to get it done. I try to get 2 full/queen quilts done a year but there are always a lot of little projects that get in the way.

mhollifiel 03-10-2013 05:06 AM

I'm retired and when not traveling, I am piecing tops for Project Linus and occasionally doing something for DH or other family. Last year I pieced 10 dozen tops for PL and pieced my first Bonnie Hunter Mystery Quilt. I leave the quilting to my beloved and gifted longarmer friends. My grandmother taught me to quilt when I was in the 5th grade. I have gone years without doing anything quilty. And other years have worked some (mostly scrap) quilting into my other sewing. These days, I don't sew anything other than piecing tops except for an occasional mending job for DH.

Kalama Quilts said: "I make complicated quilts very slowly. If I were in a hurry I'd buy a blanket."

Haha! My thoughts exactly! Couldn't have said it better myself, thank you. I was starting to feel discouraged for the quilt world.

Vicki I 03-10-2013 05:44 AM

I have been quilting for about 12 years but until I retired last year I didn't have a lot of time for quilting but since I retired I have been quilting up a storm. I still work part-time and volunteer but I gave away 9 quilts for Christmas in 2012. Am on my 3rd for 2013. I also have a longarm quilting business I am trying to get going so I am also quilting for myself and friends and family.

As many as I can
-or-
As many as I want to.

nygal 03-10-2013 07:24 AM

To be honest I've never kept track of the number. I quilt in spurts so some years I make more than others. Same with my knitting.
